For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

New to the wonderful world of skincare so thought I'd post here!

I have "rough" skin, for some reason. About a month ago, a friend of mine introduced me to Liquid Gold by Alpha H and it's amazing. Skin is pretty smooth now and I haven't experienced any adverse reactions (a rarity for me).

Here's the problem: I've just read the ingredient list and saw that "alcohol denat" held the #2 spot right after "aqua"! Isn't this something that's supposed to be absolutely horrid for skin? What are some good alternatives? Tried the Glycolic Acid 7% by the Ordinary ages ago and it didn't do anything for me.

botemp · 27/08/2019 15:14

Welcome, stable.

Wrt to alcohol denatured there isn't a definitive answer. Some will say it's terrible for the skin but it's based on studies of skin tissue rather than on the skin topically.

It's used as a pentetration enhancer in the LG formulation so it's not necessarily terrible. It's in a lot of sunscreens in high concentration (which plenty on here use) to keep the filters stable. It can be drying for some, but not necessarily for all. It does tend to be a good rule of thumb to avoid it as it can be irritating if it's just there as a filler ingredient rather than a formula aid. With the LG you do have the benefit that glycolic is a humectant so it balances out the impact somewhat.

How and how often. Are you using it, on its own or moisturiser on top? Were you using the 7% in the same frequency/use?

Does anyone here use a facial fake tan? I was just thinking of how much more healthy my skin looks in summer, I don’t have a tan as such as use spf 50 diligently but look more golden rather than yellow/sallow.

I normally steer clear of fake than as a) hate the smell b) am worried about it clogging pores but apparently the st tropez face tanning mist does neither of those things.

Is it even worth trying given I’m using P50 every second night? If it genuinely doesn’t have that fake tan smell I can always use it up on my body I suppose.

botemp · 30/08/2019 07:12

I use a liquid bronzer instead, Sallie, looks undetectable and like a fake tan but none of the hassle, you can also mix it into your foundation. In winter I often wear a browny rose cream blusher that knocks the sallowness out of my complexion for the most part as I find bronzer a bit odd looking in winter light.

I don't think fake tan is a great marriage with actives and as I understand it, DHA is also a pro-ageing ingredient.

I do use fake tan on the body but it does go quicker when using a glycolic body lotion which isn't anywhere near the strength and frequency of what happens on my face.

It may be worth looking at the DHA alternatives, I think hand chemistry had a self tanner without DHA. They're just not as instantaneously effective but require gradual build up and, I assume, since it's relatively new technology they're not as developed with various undertones, etc. So it all may be a bit orange/streaky.

I've heard good things about the tan luxe face drops (you mix into moisturiser), I think they're a DHA/non DHA mix (not certain on that though) and if you do use that daily I think you would be able to maintain the colour. I think H&F uses drops daily and she uses a similar amount of actives.

I’m reading the thread though I haven’t posted for a while.

I remember once reading an article where a dermatologist said using fake tan was one of the worst things you can do to your skin. No idea if that’s true but it ties into what you said about DHA bo.

I wanted to share a new product I’ve been using. Like a sheep I bought the Clarins chamomile toner after reading about it. It’s surprisingly nice and leaves my skin smoother and a bit glowy. It turns out on (finally) reading the ingredients it contains lactic acid, albeit what is likely in a very low %. This is good news for me because for a while I seem to have been unable to use acids as they bring me out in red, itchy lumps on the lower part of my face. This doesn’t do that so I’m very pleased. Being Clarins it is perfumed, though not overwhelmingly so.

I’ve also been using the Perricone no eyeshadow eyeshadow which is a cream/serum. It’s about the same shade as my skin so no ‘eyeshadow’ effect for me but it definitely brightens and evens out the colour on my lids and hopefully the anti-aging ingredients will help a bit too.

I really need to start using my NuFace regularly. I’ve had it nearly a year and still only use it sporadically. Ridiculous.

TantricTwist · 30/08/2019 14:23

Salli I've also heard good things about Tan Luxe face drops as you mix it in with your own moisturiser. I know Salli Hughes has raved about it and I'm pretty sure CH has too.

TantricTwist · 30/08/2019 14:28

@stablecarols I use Liquid Gold but only apply once every one or 2 weeks. I also use Paula's choice 2% BHA once a week and Pixi Retinol toner which is milder but I really love it and sometimes just LRP Thermal water as a toner.

@openupmyeagereyes I like the sound of that Clarins toner, I'll add that to my list.

botemp · 30/08/2019 15:05

I've had a bit of a quick read up on DHA and alternatives. The alternative erythulose is only of interest if you're allergic to DHA or it causes breakouts, etc. They're both damaging to the skin causing oxidative stress, you're still causing pigment to darken = which is damaging to the skin and pro ageing just not as bad as traditional sun tanning. So in short, it's not great for skin, ok for very occasional use and some damage mitigated with antioxidants and SPF but cosmetic temporary bronzing without a tanning aid is probably still the best choice.

SallieSallow · 30/08/2019 18:20

Thank you Bo and everyone, I’ll steer clear of facial fake tan - I did have one from deciem (hylamide) ages ago that was non DHA but it had an awful smell, and doesn’t sound like the alternative is any better.

Which liquid bronzer do you use Bo? I love the vita liberata body blur, might see if they do anything similar for the face.

I’m going to have a look at that eyeshadow too open I’ll steer clear of the Clarins though, I’ve reacted to everything of theirs I’ve ever tried. And I’ve completely abandoned my Nuface, not sure if I should even attempt to use now that I’ve had fillers and Botox.

botemp · 30/08/2019 18:35

There is a VL body blur for the face but I'm not sure it's as good as the body one. Think I only saw a few disappointed reviews IIRC.

I have one from Sisley which I like because it's matte but it's expensive and has essential oils, the latter means I can't tolerate it as well on Tret. I've switched to (while carefully finishing up the Sisley) Dr Periccone no bronzer bronzer which does have a bit of glitter when you swatch it so I thought I'd hate it but it's not visible on the face, just healthy looking. Really blends in and melds seamlessly.

I think nuface and fillers are fine, it's RF therapy that doesn't go together with fillers.

SallieSallow · 30/08/2019 19:04

Thanks Bo I’ll have a look at the dr perricone one - and might dig out the Nuface yet again!

botemp · 30/08/2019 19:08

There's also the Sensai bronzing gel that comes in various shades. I don't like the glitter in it but that's personal. I think you can only see it in person at Harrod's in the UK. It is a MUA fave though, although mostly used on men's bodies to bring out the six pack.

Looks good Queen 👑

JDSTER · 01/09/2019 09:52

I noticed Sali Hughes recommends a new Cerave ‘SA cleanser’ that has salicylic acid in. Also hylauronic acid and usual ceramides so not meant to be too drying.

YesQueen · 01/09/2019 22:37

@EnidButton I'm really liking it. Very close second to CYO!

SallieSallow · 02/09/2019 12:19

I heard about that cleanser JDSTER (think friends in the US might have mentioned it) but couldn't find it anywhere here apart from Amazon and it was quite expensive.

I'll definitely look into it as a morning cleanse once it's more readily available.

Your skin looks great YesQueen but I think it always does! Is CYO still available or is it discontinued now?

SallieSallow · 02/09/2019 16:26

Looks like Cerave have expanded their range quite extensively, hopefully more of their stuff will cross the pond soon!

YesQueen · 02/09/2019 21:00

@SallieSallow still available until the end of the year apparently, I checked Grin
Wearing bright red eyeshadow today and had loads of compliments which is nice (ABH modern renaissance palette with makeup geek curtain call)

SallieSallow · 03/09/2019 09:33

oh heck what are you going to do after that YesQueen or have you stocked up for several years Grin

Tsmummy08 · 03/09/2019 09:37

Hi all and thanks for the SPF recommendations - I've got the Frezyderm untinted but it's the heavy silicone feel that I have an issue with under foundation etc, I use the tinted version on its own and that's ok for a quick summer face but I'm just not keen on how the clear version sits under makeup. So I had a look at the others recommended - it appears the reason mine (Skin Aqua Super Moisture milk) has gone up in price so much is that it's discontinued and they've come out with a new version, so I'm getting that... the Super Moisture Gel is the one that comes in a large bottle - it's possibly a bit drying but I've put that on the list too, plus some Canmake mermaid SPF. I'll report back....

CJ/Bo Thanks for the heads up on the DE Vit C - I checked mine, which was bought in June and the expiration date is September 2019 :( My current one is due to run out next month (I get through them every 4 months) - so I'll contact customer services. It really is crap. I'm going to go back to Timeless again because it wouldn't surprise me if my this one is already oxidised (expiration date Nov 19).

SallieSallow · 04/09/2019 13:25

Tant I'm not a fan of the slippery silicone feel either (which is why I don't use primers) but I find the frezyderm untinted dries down if you leave around 5 mins before applying foundation and actually makes quite a good base for it. You might have already tried that though Smile And I'd be interested to hear what you think of the mermaid one if you do try it.

That's pretty crap about DE, hope they sort it out for you. I love the timeless one and never had an issue with expiration dates or oxidisation though I do keep it in the fridge.

botemp · 04/09/2019 14:12

It is alarming to read the DE issue isn't an isolated incident. Wonder what keywords we need to use to get SpaceNK on here to act all apologetic about it. Did they ever respond to you on Instagram CJ?

In contrast the Timeless I ordered had a production date of the 15th of August and I ordered it on the 23rd so it was shipped from the US to the UK stockist and then sent onto me within a week. I do really appreciate that so long as you order with an official Timeless stockist you're getting the freshest product possible. Aware I sound a bit like a Timeless shill now Blush promise you I'm not!

OP posts:
Tsmummy08 · 04/09/2019 14:20

Sallie I'll try the untinted one again, I'm probably just rushing a bit!

Bo, haha I believe you! After this exchange is sorted I'll go back to using Timeless - or SC if I'm feeling rich :)

SallieSallow · 04/09/2019 21:12

Sorry TS just realised I called you Tant Blush at least you knew who I was talking to even if I didn’t Grin
