Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Yes Bo excellent title for a new thread Grin not sure what (if anything) I’ll be having done though.

P50 has arrived (comes via DPD) so that was speedy service - mind you for £6 it should be!

Bo yes it was all BR products, 6 of them and 2 were £150ish the others were close to £100 added up to £700ish in total Shock they then went on to suggest some add ons - eye cream and a couple of other things, one of them was £200 on it’s own!!

Purple I find NARS pure radiance tinted moisturiser gives pretty good coverage without looking cakey, it does depend what you want/need to cover though. I really like bare minerals complexion rescue too, it’s sheer but you can build it up - I use more on my nose and press in with a beauty blender. Might be worth getting a good concealer for problem areas and then trying one of the two mentioned above for all over. I used to like IT cosmetics cc cream too which again is buildable and non cakey but there isn’t a great shade range on offer here and I’ve found both the NARS and BM match my skin tone better.

purplefig I saw that mascara yesterday when I was browsing Primark. I did think a few of the tubes looked suspiciously like Benefit packaging. I’ll pick some up next time I’m in. No hardship if it’s not quite right for £3. The Alex Steinherr stuff was still on sale and not reduced I noticed.

I always hear up eyelash curlers with my hairdryer. I’m having LVL done at the weekend. I last had it done about 18 months ago. I have a voucher to use up at beauty salon and fancied trying LVL again.

SallieSallow · 06/08/2019 21:10

I’ll have to hand my style and beauty card in as can’t remember the last time I used an eyelash curler & don’t know what LVL is Blush I got lucky with my eyelashes though, they’re one of the (few) things I’m happy enough with and don’t need to faff over much.

SallieSallow · 09/08/2019 21:47

I’ve been messaging with the face tinkering people and sent some photos, they said possibly Botox for my eyes but obviously they need to see me before recommending anything. They didn’t say anything about my mouth, maybe it’s drooped past the point of no return Sad

I’ve used the P50 twice, didn’t dilute it or anything (living dangerously again Grin) no flaking or irritation and I think my skin does look slightly fresher. I also had a hormonal spot brewing on my chin which it seems to have seen off so quite pleased so far. I’ll keep using it every second night but might need to rethink that when/if I re-introduce tret in the autumn.

botemp · 10/08/2019 10:15

I think mouth is difficult to treat directly as there are so many muscles involved in that area IIRC. It's more likely to lift with something else, I think? Jawline or cheeks, maybe? It really isn't my expertise. I did see there was a book out by a cosmetic dermatologist that discusses all types of procedures that looked an interesting read:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/099263623X/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_7?smid=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

She also has a book out on diets for skin but I'm always a bit suspect of those considering nutritional health is not usually a dermatologist's field.

Yes P50 is great for scaring off on brewing pimples. I love zapping them and seeing them dissipate in hours.

I have no idea what LVL stands for either, I've gone with lash volume lift but it may very well be a brand name as I've seen it termed differently and then LVL is never mentioned.

I’ve ordered a bottle of cosrx snail mucin. Anyone used it and got good results. My skin concern is hormonal acne so get a few huge spots every month- Iknow it wont help with that but wondered about healing the dark spots after the spots

JDSTER · 10/08/2019 17:44

Who are the face tinkering people Sallie?

I had my two week check post Botox. All fine, nothing else needed. I’m very pleased with the results. I had LVL today which is length, volume, lift. It really just makes the eyelashes you’ve got look more lengthened. It’s worked really well.

I think droopy mouth can use a touch of filler higher up in the cheeks which sort of scaffolds up the face. That book by Dr Stephanie Williams looks good- I nearly bought it but got the one by Alice Hart- Davis, who is a beauty journalist. ‘The tweakments guide’ She discusses Botox/fillers etc but also a low down on other treatments and facials. I’ve read a few of her columns in national newspapers and found them interesting.

Hello from the Canadian Rockies. Halfway through a 16 roadtrip. 3 days from Vancouver, then train to Seattle for a couple of days then flying back to LHR. Not stepped foot in a pharmacy yet (should I?) Generally been in a skincare funk hence my absence (was Pupsie). Not changed anything in my routine for yonks.

We had to buy some SPF at the base of a mountain yesterday as we'd left ours in the hotel. I bought some Sun Bum. Really impressed. DH commented that it sunk in quickly and easily with no stickiness. Even the teens didn't complain.

How is everyone and what's new?

SallieSallow · 11/08/2019 10:38

Face tinkering people = aesthetic nurses Grin

I’ve Been Done Shock Botox round my eyes (same areas as you JDSTER hope it works as well as yours has) and filler just under my cheekbones and a tiny bit in the corner of my lips. Can see a massive difference in my mouth, I’m really pleased with that. No difference to my eyes yet but it can take up to 2 weeks she said.

EnidButton · 11/08/2019 13:19

Hi CJ 👋🏻Nothing to report here. Glad you're well. Your trip sounds amazing! Canada is next on my list of places I must visit. Are Canadians as lovely and nice as they seem?

Sallie ooooh! Very interested in how the fillers go. Did you just get a tiny bit in your cheeks too or a bit more?

JDSTER · 11/08/2019 13:23

Wow Salllie Grin Definitely takes the two weeks to take full effect but fillers instant. Keep us posted.

CJDoesTheJackal · 11/08/2019 15:58

Enid yes Canadians really are utterly lovely!!

botemp · 11/08/2019 18:58

I did hear about that Alice Hart-Davies book as well, JDSTER, but it was on a video of Caroline Barnes with AH-D herself, and not meaning to be catty but she looked very much how I don't ever want to end up looking when it comes to all these procedures. Not sure if that influences the writing but it put me off that book.

Oh yes the Canadians are beyond lovely and so polite, they'll apologise even when it's your fault/mistake and won't have you owning it. I'm always mystified they haven't been completely taken advantage of. Takes a bit of getting used to when you cross over the border despite that forced American service mentality.

CJ, I'm not sure if there's anything in Canada but if you're passing an Ulta in Seattle, they sell the glycolic body lotion I'm using and I remember you asking after those a while back.

Brand that's hard to get here but has some really interesting sunscreen things is Supergoop, they had a cleanser at some point that gave an SPF 30 still wondering how that worked.

Ooh thanks Bo. I'll keep an eye out. Good of you to remember.

TantricTwist · 12/08/2019 15:00

Thanks Bo for the normal mascara covered wih tubing mascara tip, I will try that.

SallieSallow · 12/08/2019 15:41

CJ I think there should be a Sephora in Seattle so I'd definitely head there as well as the Ulta if you have the time, they do a lot of brands you can't get here plus their own range of skincare and makeup which is meant to be pretty good (according to my US friends) so worth a look.

Enid I had slightly more filler in the cheeks but still not much at all, she wanted to start me off gradually and maybe do a little bit more next time if I feel I want/need it. I'm not sure if cheeks is the right way to describe where the filler went, I think it would be at the sides of mouth that's just under the cheek if that makes any sense? One thing she suggested for next time was maybe putting a teeny bit more all around the lips to make them more defined & appear a bit more lifted. I'm quite keen on that as I've grumped on here before that although they are fairly full my lips no definition so lipstick can look very messy/clownlike on me. I do have slight bruising/swelling at the corners where the filler went so I'd have to bear that in mind if I have any further lip tinkering done. No swelling or bruising on the under cheek fillers or round my eyes from the Botox - I'm obviously tough as old boots Grin

I'll try and share some pics if I can work out how to edit, I did try cropping some before pics to just show my mouth but they came out very blurry.
