🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Shitting About All Day Discussing Co Dictionary

Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

TantricTwist · 16/07/2019 00:15

Excuse the potty mouth, kind of forgot myself there Blush

I'll try that Nivea lotion, thanks. I'll be buying some more LRP lipikar body lotion soon as I really like it. The pump not reaching the bottom of the 400ml bottle is annoying though. Can't remember who else said that. I'll have to cut the bottle in half I think.

TantricTwist · 16/07/2019 11:46

It smells really nice too @EnidButton just kind of fresh and healthy.

TantricTwist · 16/07/2019 11:58

@Enidbutton that's the one. It's so silky and lovely.

There is an even more hydrating one I havent tried which is dark blue.

EnidButton · 16/07/2019 12:00

I like the sound of it thank you, added to my order. Smile

TantricTwist · 16/07/2019 12:12

You won't regret it, it's by far the best body lotion I've ever used.

Tsmummy08 · 17/07/2019 12:00

Hello all!
Just wanted to see what everyone's been using SPF-wise this summer... my favourite Japanese sunscreen (Skin Aqua Moisture, yellow bottle) increased by 50% on Amazon recently and when I asked the seller why, he replied it was a premium product and so the price had simply gone up... not v helpful!

Anyway, I've been using Frezyderm tinted for the last month or so and absolutely love it - the colour is perfect for me (pale, sallow, NC15/20ish) and I've not burnt at all or got spots, great stuff!!

I'm also looking for a dupe for Hourglass Dim Light that I can take to festivals/nights out etc over the summer - I've been looking online but haven't found anything - anyone here got any recs? @YesQueen - can you think of anything? I've looked at the Kiko finishing powders but they seem more like traditional powders, rather than the blurry magical type :)

YesQueen · 17/07/2019 12:27

@Tsmummy08 I have!

The one on the left of this palette (called breathe) is a dupe

Tsmummy08 · 17/07/2019 12:30

Brilliant! Thanks @YesQueen! Will try it and see if it's way more glittery, but looks like it'll be great, cheers :)

YesQueen · 17/07/2019 12:35

Swatches here. It's strangely not glittery for makeup revolution, I just tried it again (surprise surprise I have it!) not as soft but for £4...

Ello with rosacea I'd stay away from acids in the main. Exceptions are Azelaic and BHA, the latter being better suited for pores and the former more for general rosacea management and keeping things calm and hopefully less red but it really depends on how far progressed the rosacea is. Though I would point out it's a characteristic to have open pores with rosacea, they're kind of empty and therefore look larger in most and there's not much you can do about it except tackle the rosacea itself, are you on Soolantra or similar?

Ts, I'm trying to think where I saw dupes but can't remember, however, I do know Hourglass do the most adorable travel size versions of them. Cult beauty and SpaceNK sell them. I did recently receive an invite from CB to fill out a questionnaire that gets you a £5 code with minimum £10 spend, I ignored it as I always have to spend a high minimum with them to get free shipping and the 15% codes make more of a dent then but can look it up if you didn't get an invite and pass on the code as that would make a dent on the price of the Hourglass mini.

I'm all into physical sunscreens at the moment, when I started tret I didn't cope well with a lot of chemical ones (only frezyderm was fine but I didn't dare tempt fate too much) and I've not dared try again. I'm switching between the Pigeon UV from Japan which is getting increasingly hard to source as I've had a few cancelled orders when the Japan post office refused to export it and sent it back to the seller.

Otherwise I'm using the Neostrata tinted SPF but I'm not a fan, it makes me a bit dull and the pigment breaks apart throughout the day making me look dry on top of dull which is really annoying as my skin is in fantastic shape at the moment.

Also using a Heliocare one which I do really like, accidentally bought the one with fragrance but it's been fine. Will buy the right one without fragrance after this is finished but suspect I won't like it as much...

I did really like the Canmake mermaid UV from Japan before using tret. It's really cheap, no alcohol and fragrance and works well under make up.

Thanks Bo - yes I've been considering the mini Hourglass one for a while but I'm trying to spend very minimally as we've been doing house renovations for the last six months which have been a bit disastrous - the house is a literal money pit at the moment - there's no floor because the joists had completely rotted out underneath us... just a giant hole where the ground floor should be, but I digress... so skincare/makeup/any unnecessary purchases are on hold! But a £4 MUR palette I can justify to save my expensive stuff being trashed at a festie Grin

JDSTER · 17/07/2019 20:10

I haven’t heard of the canmake mermaid UV. Sounds good. I’m so very disappointed that my holy grail sunscreen, Biore UV milk has changed formulation. It used to go on beautifully matte but now it’s all greasy Angry I tried getting the older version from eBay but when it arrived it was the newer one.

JDSTER · 17/07/2019 20:12

Which heliocare Bo have you tried?

SallieSallow · 17/07/2019 20:27

I might pick up one of those revolution palettes, I’m doing a lot of work travel at the moment and I’m always nervous of losing or breaking my hourglass stuff.

In other news I’m extremely impressed with bare minerals complexion rescue, I think I may even slightly prefer it to NARS TM, though I still like that very much as well.

I’m mainly using frezyderm for my spf, I use both the tinted and the clear or sometimes a combo of both depending on what other makeup I do or don’t want to apply. I discovered a travel size of a Bioderma photoderm spf 50 in my stash that I’ve used a few times recently and really like, might be of interest to you JDSTER as it’s a matte one.

botemp · 18/07/2019 13:37

JDSTER it's the Heliocare 360 Mineral Fluid, the one without fragrance that I had meant to buy is the mineral tolerance fluid but they're very different formulas. They have a couple of interesting products, a couple very popular with oily skin as they're a Spanish brand so stand up to a good bit of sweating in the heat. I'm on the fence about the topical application of their Fernblock technology but they have a good addition of antioxidants in their formulas.

Hi guys - I wonder if you've got any advice for fading PIE? I've been doing some research and I'm currently thinking of trying a Vitamin C and a Niacinamide. Has anyone else had success with these for the purpose of removing PIE? If not, what has helped? I'm a bit limited as to what I can use, as currently pregnant.

@Tsmummy08 I have a terrible time finding an SPF that doesn't irritate my skin or break me out. I've actually had a lot of luck with the new The Ordinary Mineral Sunscreen. It goes on well and so long as it's properly rubbed in, I don't have an issue with a white case. That said, I am casper the ghost pale.

TantricTwist · 18/07/2019 17:04

Wierdly the texture of my frezyderm has changed a bit on application. It feels less smooth and like it want's to pill although it doesn't.
I've worn it over serum, moisturiser or nothing at all and it's still the same. I'm not convinced it's gone off, maybe my skin has changed??

Enid have you tried the Nivea body lotion yet? What do you think?

Tsmummy08 · 18/07/2019 17:45

Tant is it the end of the bottle? Mine have both gone weird and thick when they've started to run out...

Purplefig I'm not a fan of mineral sunscreens - although BareMinerals Prep Step seems to be ok-ish because it's slightly tinted. Glad you've found one that works!

EnidButton · 18/07/2019 18:14

Tant It hasn't come yet. Hopefully get to use it this weekend.
I also got some of that Sanctuary wet moisturiser stuff that everyone seems to be raving about but haven't used it yet. Just seems weird to put it on wet skin and then dry off with a towel. I got swept along with the hype. Grin But you never know it might be amazing.

SallieSallow · 18/07/2019 18:39

I agree that frezyderm goes a bit thick right at the end, hopefully it’s just that Tant and they’ve not changed the formula as I’ve just restocked.

I’ve ordered an exfoliant and a mitt from ameliorate as look fantastic had an offer on, you use them on dry skin pre-shower which is a bit different. I’ll report back once tested.

purple I’m not sure what PIE is? If it’s pigmentation then yes Vit C would help and also glycolic, lactic or mandelic acid but not sure if they’re safe to use in pregnancy.

purplefig · 18/07/2019 18:52

@SallieSallow PIE is Post-inflammatory Erythema, which is basically red scarring / marks from spots / picking.

purplefig · 18/07/2019 18:53

In other news - I nipped into town today to get the Nivea bodycream some of you were raving about and my my, I'm in love! I'm so moisturised and smooth!
