In all honesty, I have no clue what I am going to wear. I am normally a last minute person and I get it wrong (style wise) quite a bit.
But we will report back.

botemp · 15/03/2019 19:35

Oh dear Slipper, you'd come out so disappointed in me. I'm flying back that day so pragmatism reigns. Shoes I can take off easily, clothes that aren't constricting and can be easily layered, etc. I've missed my much needed hairdresser's appointment due to illness and my hair never really passes for groomed anyhow. I also have to either contend with unknown London water that surely will result in frizzy mop or do a dry shampoo job. Skin is also looking knackered from illness, the only thing that passes for groomed are my nails that I remembered to stick a clear coat on this week... I'm just hoping Londoners will mistake me for artfully disheveled Parisian (seems to actually work in Paris) rather than just disheveled Blush

I was quite taken with the Valentino ballgown with pockets, and the Chanel trousers / coat combo.

Both lovely and significantly out of my budget.

Redandblue11 I'm a lurker rather than a regular poster. I've only posted a couple of times. The shirt was the white oversized one in the Lemaire collection. I should have gone for a size down, but it was sold out.

ToElleWithIt · 15/03/2019 19:50

I haven’t a clue what to pack. The weather looks mixed and I’m flying budget so only a tiny case. Plus a long day on my feet means I’ll be going for comfort! I’ll figure it out.

XingMing · 15/03/2019 20:05

Slipper, I'm travelling from Cornwall on a day trip, with hours of railway time, and an hour's drive both ends. I'm packing a book and a Kindle, and wearing straightforward (hopefully chic) comfortable travelling clothes, with sensible footwear so I can do everything without discomfort. I'm 62, and may not score high fashion points. I think, correct me please, everyone, that this thread is (almost) about (technical) interest in clothes and style, rather than looking like this week's coolest Insta sensation. Or, am I going to disappoint?

KimchiLaLa · 15/03/2019 20:18

Thanks for the link Botemp that is what I wanted!!

banivani · 15/03/2019 21:05

That Vogue article is very good, thank you for the link! Wish you all a great time. Am on skiing trip currently so not keeping up much but look forward to pics and updates!

Duchessofealing · 16/03/2019 09:21

Bo - there is a J Crew on Regents Street and they have a section for Madewell - ground floor at the back if you have time.

Floisme · 16/03/2019 09:38

ThisName thanks, that looks like a really interesting article and I'm looking forward to reading it properly when I've got a bit more free time. I have very little knowledge of how clothes are made, which is something I want to rectify.

Looking forward to reports and even some masked pics if you're up for it.

botemp · 16/03/2019 11:05

Thanks Duchess. I'm waiting on the train at Gatwick, it's been a morning of many delays so don't know how much I'll be able to see but on a positive note I shouldn't have worried about packing something green as the strong winds made for lots of turbulence. I'm currently channeling a Kermit the Frog complexion Envy

Oh also, I foolishly left behind the Financial Times that I pilfered from the KLM lounge. It has a very large fashion how to spend it special this weekend. Hopefully the hotel will have a copy, otherwise I'll have to buy it somewhere.

Should have taken the Eurostar botemp ;) while the company is still operating. They said they would fold within about 12 weeks in case of a hard Brexit, yet another reason to pray that won’t come about as our household depends on the train service
Sorry you have had an unpleasant flight by the sound of it!

Enjoy the exhibition, everyone.

Red I have a pink dress in that colour, though a different cut, and I wear it with red shoes/cardi/accessories. Much recommended!

Flo I am extremely disappointed that Cos didn’t stock your jumpsuit. It is your jumpsuit, you know? Even if you don’t tend to get on well with them, I hope you get to try this one.

Elle how upsetting about the Arket dress. Is the hole fixable?

I am looking forward to reading the Vogue article.

This got me unreasonably excited: www.bbc.com/future/story/20190314-the-unexpected-magic-of-mushrooms
Mushroom leather! Mushroom bricks! What do you think of this as an architect, bo?

Redandblue11 · 16/03/2019 15:40

I saw this and thought of you Bo, were you after a sky blue suit?

ToElleWithIt · 17/03/2019 07:15

It’s just below the waist at the side so my mum suggested putting in a teeny seam that they would be pulled into. They’re both about the size of a pencil cross section. There’s plenty of volume in the skirt so I think that’ll work.

Vogue article was excellent. Read it at the airport. Just boarded.

botemp · 17/03/2019 09:46

Flight wasn't that terrible Peregrane, unfortunately the passenger next to me had a fear of flying so I had to assure them I've experienced much worse turbulence and it was all fine. Not sure how helpful that really was though Hmm but best I could come up with at the time.

I'll owe you an opinion on mushrooms as it appears a lengthy piece.

Well I've been all over London yesterday but still not feeling the love or the wares on offer. I may also just have been a bit grumpy from all the delays everywhere.

Few standout shops were Wolf and Badger in the newly developed coal drop yards (the rest of the shops are the same as everywhere). I tried on the skirt and top in pic 1, really liked the sand washed silk top but unfortunately it wasn't just pope scandalising but full on public indecency charges waiting to happen as any move left or right revealed everything. The skirt I liked but not the length, I'd have to wear heels and it didn't really work for winter fabric wise and not really for summer colour wise.

Margaret Howell outlet is definitely worth a visit. Things are around 50% off normal and I think it goes down further in the sales. I'm deliberating on these navy Japanese cotton trousers. Kind of annoying as the price tag had it as £145 which I thought was a great price but they were actually £195 which is one of those weird things that immediately put you off. The jumper is a men's cashmere one, lovely quality but I think it was one of those jumpers that looked great with these type of trousers but not so much with others. That was £190 iirc which is high but really isn't a bad price for quality cashmere.

Also tried on some JW Anderson for Uniqlo, I have this in a t-shirt version in orange from the last one. Quite liked the colour and the dress but unfortunately when I tried them on without trousers it turned out they were responsible for the good shape, without them it was a bit too roomy and looked a bit maternity wear. For anyone pregnant it actually would work pretty well as that. I usually am a size xxs in Uniqlo and I don't think they do this size in the colabs so that might have made a difference?

Oh, and yesterday's outfit since there was curiosity about that and should make me easy to spot sans baguette and beret on Monday as I'll be wearing the same trousers and coat.

Not sure how successful I've been in fooling London of my brand of 'chic' dishevelment but I did get eagerly approached by three French ladies in the underground asking if I was a French person living in London as they desperately needed help and their English was about as good as their map reading skills. Then again, maybe I was just the first person to actually respond to them in French...

Are the pictures from Coal Yard Drops? I quite fancy seeing the whole complex, if there's time, but also a trip to COS, which is much closer to the V&A.

Redandblue11 · 17/03/2019 13:57

Xing if there is time tomorrow I am happy to go to Coals Yard Drop with you as I will then be taking train from kings cross back home, I am not restricted by time on way back either.
The trousers look good Bo

XingMing · 17/03/2019 14:44

Sounds promisingRed, but it may depend on how late we leave the V&A. I have an inflexible train ticket for 7pm, so getting to King's X and everywhere else and back to Paddington could be too much.

MH trousers are very nice, but I love your principal outfit.

Redandblue11 · 17/03/2019 15:33

So, my birthday is very soon and I asked DH a trench coat as present. I directed him to uniqlo, I thought he would order online. I said do not worry, if it does not fit I can exchange/return and choose another.
Turns up he went to a uniqlo to see the coat and told me yesterday that he was not impressed and that looked “cheap”. Btw, his knowledge of clothing can fit on the back of a postage stamp , but he likes stuff that lasts and lasts ...
Tbh, I did not want to ask for something too expensive but he insists that is way too cheap... I know I am in a lucky position here.
So I saw this Hobbs ones (I had one similar for 8 years that ended up in charity after an ink disaster)

Lena Mac

Saskia trench

I also saw a Hobbs one with a hood that I thought could be “practical” but not sure how it would look like and was pushing the £200 mark ...

Any other suggestions? I do not want it to be overly long.

Redandblue11 · 17/03/2019 15:34

So tomorrow I will be in look out for trench coats Grin although this London trip is looking overly optimistic 😂

XingMing · 17/03/2019 18:19

I'll gladly participate in the search red, and give opinions as far as I am able, but they look rubbish on me! I bought my city raincoat in 1994-5, and I'm still wearing it. Even then, in the sale, it cost lots. The company are still going and still make the style. If the forecast says rain, I'll wear it and you can make your own call as I think it's only online and mainly custom now.

Here Mine is the simplest kneelength version.

XingMing · 17/03/2019 18:20

Mine is the CR102 style, in the sky blue.

Peregrane · 17/03/2019 19:46

Damn, those MH trousers and jumper look good, bo!
Since they work so well on you and Flo, her line would probably not suit someone pushing 180 cm, right?...
Seconding the love for your outfit for tomorrow. Just that effortlessly chic, low-key look, no wonder you are being approached by native Parisiennes...
