Are you there yet? My day has hit the skids, please cheer me up with some Dior talk.

Peregrine if you're around 5'10/5'11 (sorry I'm from the feet and inches generation) then I think MH would work well - I often have to shorten her stuff.

CatherineMaitland · 18/03/2019 12:42

I can't cheer anyone up with Dior talk as I'm not there - sad face - but the BBC has both an Yves Saint Laurent biopic on iPlayer, and a documentary about haute couture (albeit from 2007), if you're in the UK.

lightningstrikes · 18/03/2019 13:51

Red I have the Saskia trench from Hobbs and really rate it. The material is thicker and has a bit of stretch, it is just structured enough for me - hangs nicely and doesn't wrinkle. I've had a feel of a lot of others on the market and haven't regretted my choice. I have it in the beige, but may invest in a navy as well if it goes in the sale.

CriticalCondition · 18/03/2019 15:13

Another Saskia trench recommendation here. I second the PP - the fabric has some weight to it so it keeps its shape beautifully. It is cut with a lovely flare from the waist so I avoid the sack of spuds look which I'd risk with a lighter fabric belted at the waist!

I have it in a light sky blue, last year's spring colour which was on sale in January.

A couple of quick images. I’m holding the table in the cafe! It’s been a lovely meet.

I recommend “7 days out” on Netflix if you need a fashion fix. There’s one about the Chanel show.

On my train on the way home now. It was a fantastic day, really happy to have spent the day with Bo, Elle, Xing and we even met Maxima and baby in the morning.
We even fitted in some shopping here and there Smile.
Tried a few trench coats , thank you Xing, great to have a different eye that does not know you that well to provide feedback!
Here a couple of photos as a taster of the exhibition, which I think we all agreed, we highly recommend.

I’m glad you all had a great day! I’m a long way from caught up but looking forward to thoughts on the exhibit :)

Thank you for the positive feedback on the Saskia trench. I made it to Hobbs yesterday, with the good critical eye of Xing by me to provide me feedback and I have settled for the Hobbs one so DH knows what to buy and I am eager waiting for the weekend when my present is presented to me.
I tried a few trenches yesterday while on kings road:
1.Joseph outlet , blue short. Real life better than photo. Lovely fabric and colour good on me, I wanted a bit longer though. £180
2.Bimba y Lola: really fun, runs big so this is XS. Had a hood so quite practical. The strings on the cuffs annoyed me but that could be solved easily. Had a 20% off and was £220 with discount.

  1. Hobbs £190, classic trench, fabric feels quality as other posters have mentioned. Fits very well and well ...is quite classic so for work and even jeans etc can be worn quite a bit. So I went for this!

We visited some charity shops and dress agencies too. I did not get anything there, but the dress agency had a few good things at a fair prices for the condition, which was very good in general.

I personally loved the exhibition, the way it was presented, specially the ballroom and a room filled with white paper origami like flowers hanging from the ceiling. It gave all the right ambiance.
The detail and work on the dresses was fantastic, so much better to see them in real life, and many of them you can recognise from red carpet events but the real life was ten times better, because it showed detail that cannot be perceived through a screen.
The room with the white dress ‘models’ (forgot what is called) before they are made is also another special highlight for me. All this white fabric, hand sttiched giving shape to the most precise dresses.
I will follow up with photo as cannot add another picture in this post..
Ok I shut up now.

So glad you all had a good time. red I checked out the Hobbs trench today, too, in our HoF. I don't need a trench, but the fabric was lovely, I totally agree.

I love the Margaret Howell, bo. I understand about the trouser pricing, though.

I bought an Esprit jumper in slatey blue from the charity shop for £6, yesterday. It has a wide knitted sash/tie a bit like some of those discussed in the previous thread (maybe in the advent calendar?). I've also been doing a lot of menswear inspired outfits. Blazer, tartan scarf, baker boy hat, straight jeans and (probably men's) unisex Chelsea boots.

FestivaMaxima · 19/03/2019 19:42

Beautiful pictures of the Dior exhibition. I hope I manage to get a ticket to see it.
Was really lovely to meet Bo Elle and Red in real life; I’m sorry I wasn’t terribly coherent yesterday!

XingMing · 19/03/2019 19:47

It was a great day out for me. DH and DS were quite totally stunned that anyone would meet Internet chums in real life, but apart from not knowing who to approach in the foyer of the V&A, it rather felt like meeting correspondent colleagues with very close shared interests.

And the exhibition was stunning. Of course the clothes were spectacular, as was the staging and the lighting. The toiles were as perfect as the couture dresses. (How, and where, does anyone learn to sew so exquisitely?)

The surprise for me was that I had expected to like/dislike different eras of Dior, and while I had thought Maria Grazia Chiuri a surprising choice to head the house, I loved how elaborate her detailing was, while the designs appeared so subtle. The jardin fleuri dress, with the feather flowers............. wow!

After John Galliano, whose designs I liked much more than I appreciated when they were first shown I felt it was a more coherent historical narrative than I expected. The element I loved especially were the tiny doll-sized replicas of outfits in the spectrum phase of colours and accessories.

On a fine afternoon, it was a treat and a half to stroll back down the King's Road to help Red decide on her preference in trench coats, admire Elle's choice of coat and wonder how Bo could dismiss the Isabel Marant jacket so finally and quickly. Me, I couldn't get my feet through the ankles of the trousers I tried, so clearly not my day to shop! Though I might have a COS basket with Flo's culotte jumpsuit in it (as it wasn't in store), I haven't pressed buy yet. Sorry for the magnum opus!

ThisNameIsDifferentFromTheLast · 19/03/2019 21:46

Xing you write beautifully.

Red the Hobbs trench coat is a classic, and will last you many years to come. I hope you enjoy.

The photos posted so far look fabulous, looking forward to seeing more. Would love to go visit the exhibition, must look at tickets now it's been extended.

botemp · 20/03/2019 07:57

Ha, Xing, I thought it was rather obvious that the Isabel Marant coat had one shade of green too many.

The mid season sale started at COS yesterday, straight in at 50% iirc. Didn't check for the jumpsuit but probably worth checking before it sells out.

quirky, how was your conference?

Will catch up properly later as I've promised (at the meetup) to share all the spots we visited that are definitely worth going too, and my purchases from Sunday. I'll probably stick them in a doc and include them in the OP.

Name, if you can't get tickets for the V&A, get the membership, it's more money but you can go whenever you want and if you're close enough to London it's a pretty good deal considering how popular the exhibitions are. They currently have a processing time of up to six weeks though.

Some more coherent thoughts on the exhibition.

I thought it was had a lovely flow to it which took you from light rooms to dark and back into the light again. The exhibition started with the famous Bar suit and showed 4 different interpretations of the suit behind it. Then the path wended its way through different rooms dwelling on Dior inspirations from the influence of flowers, the inspiration of travel, Dior and colour, and a section on each of the artistic directors that have headed the house before finishing in that glorious ballroom.

I was another one who hadn't fully appreciated the subtly genius of Marie Grazia Chiuri's creations. In the flesh they were breathtakingly beautiful. I had always associated her with more romantic creations so I mistakenly thought that the attached red suit was
Raf Simon's and was surprised to discover that it was one of hers. The Galliano dresses were every bit as wonderful as I expected. They're not subtle, but they are the definition of a showstopper.

A toile of a Raf Simons creation, a Marc Bohan ( I think?) gold gown - beautifully simple.

Oh and the odd one out - me in my new jacket, a Joseph outlook purchase on Sunday.

Love the trench red you definitely made the right choice.

The jacket is a great fit on you, and I like how you combined it with that pale blue top underneath.

This photos are not the greatest quality, but I found very apt this Fashion Advice from C Dior on one of the old weekly fashion magazines:
The Older Woman section (read from 30 onwards...)
“... there are really no old women: there are only women who accept old age.
This does not mean that I like you to look like a little girl when you have passed middle age, but you must never give up and admit you are old. You have always to try to do the best with yourself.
...”

Thanks on the heads up on the Cos sale Bo, I only own one piece from Cos, a salmon cotton shirt. But that might change on Saturday when I plan to be near one of their stores.

Another heads-up, Margaret Howell sample sale is on March 28-29 in London. I may or may have not checked out flight prices... Will post exact details later.

I've been digging through my Paris pictures of the exhibit and it's interesting to compare and contrast. For example the bar suit mannequin is positioned quite demure in the V&A where it had more presence in Paris. Unintentionally I also took some of the same pics of standout pieces as Elle.

Thumb's up for the Joseph jacket, Elle!

XingMing · 20/03/2019 14:01

@Flo, there is the same shape jumpsuit that we like in the COS sale, but it's in a moire fabric, which could make it more wedding guest wear? The mid-range sizes remained in stock as of a few minutes ago.

Loving all the exhibition pictures and gossip! I have bought a few bits in the Cos and Arket sales - no doubt most will go back again, as usual. :)
