I feel your pain Jon. I get sent to meetings sometimes where I'm expected to look professional but approachable and definitely not corporate. I usually take 'smart-casual' very literally and wear a tailored blazer over dark, reasonably smart jeans and a casual shirt/T/fine knit jumper. We're normally seated round a table so, if they're all suited and booted, the jeans aren't visible, and if they're all in hoodies I just take off the jacket. Different for a conference though where you have to socialise too. If it's all happening at one venue and meals etc are all served there then think I'd take the warm, less smart coat cos no-one's going to see it.

Xing I'm trying not to get carried away but that Cos jumpsuit might just be bloody perfect - relaxed but also appropriately smart with a hint of glamour. It even puts me in mind of Sarah Murdoch's dress at the wedding of Rupert and the lovely Jerry, which is one of my favourite wedding guest outfits. And the sleeveless thing looks fixable.

I've not done too well before when buying Cos online but it so happens I might be close to a store later this week so hopefully I can call in and try it on. Thanks so much Wine And go ahead and buy it for yourself too!

Sorry bani missed your post. Love the sound of your trousers! I like deep pink with green as well as with purple/plum shades, also with that very, very dark brown if you can find it. I mostly only like black with other really dark colours.

CatherineMaitland · 10/03/2019 10:48

I like pink with chocolate and khaki. And I've seen people do it with red which I admire but could never carry off myself.

Redandblue11 · 10/03/2019 11:43

Catching up after a night wearing the michael kors jumpsuit with pink jacket over for a night out. You will have to take my word for it as I did not take any photos.
The Cos jumpsuit is wonderful, fingers crossed looks as good on as on the website!
So Bani you are coming round to pink Wink, I second the deep green combo but the chocolate, khaki also will look great specially if you are pale I think.

My dc is 9 so is a lot easier now easier getting ready, more bloddy difficult to think how to explain tricky questions or put boundaries
But the hidding until they are made ready by dad used to work for me too/getting up really early and leaving for work before they got up.

Floisme · 10/03/2019 11:47

I found things got easier physically but harder emotionally.

Floisme · 10/03/2019 11:47

I was talking about children getting older in case that wasn't clear!

Redandblue11 · 10/03/2019 11:48

Oh I am the proud ebay winner of a pink dress (yes that one that I suggested to Flo) for £5 and a wide legged high waisted joseph jeans for £30.
Waiting impatiently for both. I think I am kinda ready for spring now Smile

What a haul! i'm glad the pink dress is going to a good home.

Redandblue11 · 10/03/2019 11:49

Yes you were clear Flo at least to me Grin

quirkychick · 10/03/2019 12:40

I knew what you meant, flo. Dd1 is 13, needs very little done for her but causes more worry, now I think.

This didn’t seem to post earlier when there weren’t yet ten replies on the same, but here goes :) bani I tend to dislike black with colours but I actually think it works well with dusky pink.

My other favourite is combining it with navy. I have a cool toned pink cardigan that I wear with a warm navy herringbone suit and its one of the best combinations in my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. (And I love a strong pink with red!)

I’ve worn pink with dusky green as well but to me it can come across as twee.

ImYourWomanJonSnow · 10/03/2019 13:04

red is that a Finery dress? I was looking at it too, there are several on eBay at the moment, please let me know how it fits and feels, I may take a punt on it. It looks great!

Agree with pink and deep and khaki combination being perfect. I don’t seem to be able to avoid black entirely though, several of my coats and most shoes are black but I think it works with layers.

Thank you for the jacket recommendation Flo it remonded me I actually do have an old Jill Sander one, it’s black wool and unlined so will work is a soft top layer if I need it and will look smart. Going to go with the warm padded coat, nobody is going to see it as you say and I hate being cold.

Hope the silence from bo is her having fun not being unwell 🤒

timeisnotaline · 10/03/2019 13:19

I love the idea of tonal pink! or with deep ruby shades. Very soft pink could probably be offset with deep green or navy as well? (Not entirely sure of this!)

banivani · 10/03/2019 14:51

I haven’t actually bought the trousers mind you, partly because I’m holding out for a code and partly because I’m trying to be sensible. I have some wine red/burgundy tops, but not sure if the shades or right. That’s a lovely combination, you’re right about that!

It’s not smart to buy clothes that mean you have to buy other clothes ... so I’m trying to think first. Attaching pic. I love linen trousers for summer and I wear them out quickly due to chub rub and cycling so they need replacing all the time and I go mad when I see something of the right shape. Anyway these are possibly a tricky colour. My current summer tops are jade green, bright navy, black (failsafe) and mustard yellow. 🤔
None of them seem to be right so I’m going to be sensible and not go wild.

Flo you made perfect sense and I really hope the jumpsuit fits, it feels very “you”. 🤛

Congrats on your eBay wins Red!

bani my only pair of shorts is that shade of pink and also linen, for summer that colour works almost as neutral, I don’t even think what colour top I pair it with (with love, enabler 😀)

Redandblue11 · 10/03/2019 16:53

Jon yes is a finery dress. I will let you know about the fit when they arrive.
Yes there are a few on eBay at the moment.
I love the shade and general shape, although that drapey at the front sometimes works against me if it does not fit well (eg instead of drapey ... empty bag ) but for £5 I thought was worth a punt.

Bani yes that shade of pink can work almost as neutral and red that you mentioned can work. Bright navy too I think

I was also thinking about Bo hope you feeling better Star

XingMing · 10/03/2019 17:47

In ancient days, my DSis bought a lot from next (so 1983/84) and they once did a summer palette of sugar pink, white, pale khaki and light chocolate. Neapolitan ice-cream colours.

XingMing · 10/03/2019 17:49

Flo, I am absurdly pleased to have picked out something promising.

CatherineMaitland · 10/03/2019 18:57

I really love that particular pink shade! Something light and warm like cream or biscuit might go with the trousers too.

In the weekly "Catherine sees colourful thing and wants it right now" cycle I seem to be in at the moment, I'm rather coveting an orange handbag. I'm just worried it won't go with enough things to justify buying it.

Interested to hear about the Finery dress, been looking at their site for a while.

XingMing · 11/03/2019 08:54

Catherine, IMO bright handbags are wonderful because they add a flash of colour to an otherwise neutral outfit. I don't own a black handbag at all. Red, coral/orange, mustard, daffodil yellow (Amal Clooney dress colour cheap, but surprisingly versatile with black, white, grey and navy as well as all shades of denim), blue, tan, olive green and donkey brown. None were expensive (or they were vintage).

botemp · 11/03/2019 09:24

No fun I'm afraid, just taking it easy but I did get results in this morning and thankfully it's a minor blip and I am definitely a lot better than this time last week Smile

Will struggle to catch up but I like pink with charcoal and other washed out black shades especially green leaning ones, and washed black silk works well with it too. It feels a bit more of today and less sickly sweet IME.

I like the idea of a bright bag too, though I don't really own many. I did eye up attached from Arket last year but the one in shop was already marked and I do find the bags at Arket and Cos relatively expensive for the quality on offer. But it did really brighten up my camel coat and it has good versatility with white. I do think you have to keep the rest pretty simple or go Iris Apfel with it, feels like there's little in between as it is a bit of an eye catcher. I have a pair of bright orange sunglasses that do really lift up outfits with little effort so it is a good addition, I always thought I'd grow bored with the colour but I haven't yet, they're not my go to sunglasses though.
