The Magistrate, that was it! He did a brilliant comic monologue, IIRC and the audience was in fits.

Apologies that I already posted something similar, but it was during the NI trip and think it got buried Blush but I’m really curious to know....

I’m helping a friend wedding dress shop at the moment and it made me wonder whether Meghan’s dress has influenced bridal fashion at all like Diana’s and Kate’s did? I realise she’s not a future queen consort but her dress will still have been seen by a huge amount of people. She obviously had a pretty basic design but the simple shape/fabric and boat neckline could be key features of inspiration.

Saying that, I really haven’t seen many wedding dresses that seem to be inspired or similar to M’s at all compared to the multitudes of lace sleeved dresses that emerged after Kate’s and I’m wondering if there’s any reason for that? Just not an inspiring or desirable design? Or that H&M are not high profile enough Royals? Any thoughts?

I think MMs wedding dress would be hard to copy because of its simplicity. It relies on expensive fabric and cut which cannot be duplicated with cheap fabric. It is plain, expensive and simple. Far easier to make a lace wedding dress and copy it.

desertgirl · 04/03/2019 06:15

Agree with @user1457017537, not easy to make a very simple dress look as good as Meghan’s without paying a fortune; Kate’s much more copiable

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/03/2019 06:27

Yes, plus it was her veil that was the star piece.

I've seen a few dupes for her Stella McCartney evening dress though.

I have actually been to a few weddings with a meghan style dress - although usually they're strapless or some other neckline - the boat neckline is unusual. I think the very simple dress is already relatively popular and didn't require the same level of shift in people's approach that Kate's did.

I'd say in the last few years the weddings I've been to have all been on one end of the extreme - elaborate/lacy/ detailed or extraordinarily simple. Not much in the middle.

Pinkjellyfish · 04/03/2019 13:53

Ah that’s a very good point about a simple dress being expensive to make look good! Hadn’t thought of that. The boat neckline is actually my favourite part of the dress and could be replicated with loads of different styles/materials. Interesting thoughts, thank you Smile

I see the Royal Family are clamping down on trolls and abuse on their social media. Sad that they have to, but hopefully this will stop some of the vitriol we’ve seen and commented on.

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/03/2019 18:07

William and Harry have both been out and about today but if their wives aren't with them then they don't get much attention!

The Cambridge and Sussexes will be at Prince Charles' investiture anniversary tomorrow and then W&K are in Blackpool on Wednesday (no doubt scoping out the local Butlins as a summer holiday destination), Meghan has an IWD panel on Friday, and both couples will be at a commonwealth service next Monday.

I think that's a bit sad Queen as when I do see reports on what they're doing it's often really interesting.

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/03/2019 18:28

I know, but the media seem uninterested unless Kate and Meghan are around. That's when they make the front pages.

This is why I think that charities who get one of the women on board must be so happy. Even with all the drama etc, they get so much more attention and focus.

I feel like Harry got a lot of positive media attention before Meghan, so wouldn’t say that’s exactly true. But she overshadows him now a lot ... I guess he was only interesting as a bachelor :(

William never got a lot of press imo

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/03/2019 18:39

Yes, I think you're right. Dashing bachelor prince vs unavailable soon-to-be dad.

This is what used to frustrate Charles . The media were only interested in Diana and what she was wearing!

Grinchly · 04/03/2019 19:29

See I don't get the thing about Megan's wedding dress. The veil was stunning but the dress was baggy and fitted her oddly.

The evening dress was lovely though.

I thought Eugenie's was sensational.

BigGreenOlives · 04/03/2019 19:39

I think Eugenie's dress looked so good as she was so clearly delighted to be getting married. She's grown up in the Royal Family, this is just her normal, she didn't look intimidated by the occasion, just happy. Her dress was chosen by her to suit her, she didn't have to worry about how it would be viewed by the press, she's already gone through enough of that. I think it must have been much harder for Catherine & Meghan as they are marrying in.

SenecaFalls · 04/03/2019 20:12

Meghan's dress was not baggy. It was body skimming, a hallmark of classic Givenchy.

BartonHollow · 04/03/2019 20:17

I much preferred both Eugenie's looks on the day. The thing about Meghan's...

Given the occasion
Given the designer

It felt quite plain and also looked a bit ill fitting

Her evening dress was lovely but again quite plain

Eugenie seemed to strike the exact right note (for me) with both dresses

I remember thinking back that some didn't like her evening, but I found it classy af.

bananaboats · 04/03/2019 20:21

I didn't like Meghan's dress either, I thought Eugenie's was beautiful though perfect princess dress!

user1457017537 · 04/03/2019 20:28

I preferred Meghan’s dress and veil to Kate’s or Eugenie’s. I do like MMs style though.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 04/03/2019 20:36

Meghan's dress looked like it had been fitted for someone else and she'd borrowed it. Her evening dress was much better though.

Eugenie's was stunning and perfect for her, but I didn't think her evening dress did her any favours.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 04/03/2019 20:43

Megan’s wedding dress was odd. It really didn’t seem to fit, but maybe it was think material that didn’t flow with her body’s shape. She’s really tiny, but it made her look shapeless. Catherine’s dress was really showing her figure.

Grinchly · 04/03/2019 20:46

This is my idea of classic Givenchy.
By contrast M M looked like a sack of spuds!
