Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Enid yes I find that sometimes something sugary, chocolatey and warm can help me too, except when I have one of my severe migraines then nothing touches it for 3 days!
I've tried your pressing/patting technique for serums and moisturisers twice now and I must say I think I like it! My skin seems to like less friction and I find products actually go in quicker so far so thank you 😊

Flowers for you too Enid. Migraines are an absolute bastard.

Pupsiecola · 31/10/2018 12:01

I need to catch up. But can anyone recommend a nourishing mask for winter? I don't often do masks. What are people using?

TIA

Off to read...

SophieLion · 31/10/2018 17:03

Thank you Bo. I was just looking on the Vanity Rex site on my mobile and couldn't find the reviews. Will try on the proper site in the computer. Will also ask my derm about the Obagi one.

Hope you feel better soon Enid

SophieLion · 31/10/2018 17:04

Sent you flowers too Enid but they disappeared

EnidButton · 31/10/2018 18:21

Thank you all for the Flowers I'm ok today. Smile Just reading a thread in chat about migraine treatment and didn't realise there were so many options. I thought there wasn't much point going back to my gp with them but maybe I should.

Anyway, using the Cycle tracker app thing, I think I get a couple of spots before ovulation rather than period. Nothing major but interesting to see if that's a pattern.

EnidButton · 31/10/2018 18:21

You're welcome Mint. I think being gentle with your skin is best.

SallieSallow · 31/10/2018 18:31

Glad you’re feeling a bit better Enid Flowers and that you like the new LRP!

Pupsie I think it was Tant that recommended some moisturising sheet masks that she got in tkmaxx, I looked for them but didn’t find any and of course now can’t remember what they were. My memory is absolutely shocking Blush Sad I blame the peri menopause.

Koko Thank you, Cake I think quite a few of us here get them. I must start trying to spot the early signs. I think this one was caused by an L-Theanine supplement so that's easily avoided. Interesting to hear what helps others too.

Craving sweet things today. Custard at 11.30pm is fine right? Blush

Tsmummy08 · 01/11/2018 10:33

Is anyone going for the M&S advent calendar this year? I swore to myself I wouldn't, as I haven't really made use of most of the contents from last year yet, but I'm wobbling!!

NiceUnusualDifferent · 01/11/2018 13:41

I’ve decided not this year Tsmummy I loved last years which was my first ever beauty advent but I’ve already got Look Fantastic & Latest in Beauty ones eeek!

SallieSallow · 01/11/2018 18:43

No advent calendars here TSmummy I’ve never had one & judging by the unboxing threads on here last year there would be too many things (in all of them) I won’t use. If I could find a makeup only one with decent brands at a reasonable price I’d maybe consider it. Wish hourglass did one though dread to think what the price of that would be Shock

SplatPancake · 01/11/2018 20:03

I’m not Advent calendar-ing this year either.

From last year’s, I couldn’t use about 1/3 stuff (unflattering lip colour or high quantity of silicones for example); am using about 1/3 on and off, not fussed really; and the other 1/3 is very useful for travelling. I repurchased one item (ameliorate body lotion). It was a nice experience, but wouldn’t rush to repeat it.

Now if someone wanted to “gift” me a Diptyque or Liberty calendar I’d be happy to evaluate those....

SplatPancake · 01/11/2018 20:10

There was an absolutely hilarious thread on here last year about literally The WORST beauty advent ever:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3102388-Sharing-the-Shitness-HOF-Advent-Calendar-SPOILERS

SallieSallow · 01/11/2018 20:22

Splat I take it you must rate ameliorate then, I’ve been eyeing up their handcream recently. I’m the same as you, going by what I read on here last year I’d use about 1/3 of the stuff in them if that.

And yes I did read the House of Fraser one Grin

JDSTER · 01/11/2018 20:57

I’m not bothering with an advent calendar. Too many things I just won’t use. I did however treat myself to a set of Jo Loves candles - Christmas trees, log fires, plum pudding and salted caramel. I’m now considering which one to try first.

There was a bit of chat earlier in the week about applying skincare. Here’s a new video from Dr Sam that I thought was quite good. She shows her 13 dot technique, which she always advocates and how she massages in her products, quite firmly- definitely no patting!

SplatPancake · 01/11/2018 21:56

Sallie, yes I liked the Ameliorate a lot - when I remember to use it!

BabyPigeon83 · 01/11/2018 22:00

I almost bought the m&s calendars, it looks like a nice bargain at £35 ( with a £35 purchase) but it's too much skincare that I won't use.
I agree with Sallie, I would buy a make-up calendar with brands like Mac, Bobbi brown, Estée Lauder, YSL, Hourglass, Urban Decay etc. I would not mind if the calendar has had some mini perfumes either. 😁

EnidButton · 01/11/2018 22:34

I'm not in the Christmas mood this year so not bothering with an advent calendar for myself. Told DH I didn't want one too as he often buys me a fancy one. I had a good clear out this year of samples and minis too.

(I wouldn't object to a free one if any companies are reading though. Liberty? Selfridges? Grin )

I like the sound of those candles JD Especially Salted Caramel and Plum Pudding. Have you had a sniff yet?

EnidButton · 01/11/2018 22:36

unflattering lip colour

Yes! Only ever had one that wasn't a matte warm peachy brown colour and was a shade I'd actually pick myself. (Reminded me about it actually, might wear it tomorrow.)

JDSTER · 02/11/2018 10:55

I lit plum pudding last night Enid. Lovely 😊

SophieLion · 02/11/2018 10:58

Interesting video JDSTER. Thanks.

JDSTER · 02/11/2018 14:37

You’re welcome Sophie I applied my DE Vit C with a bit more massaging this morning, based on that video.
