What is this foul perfume I keep smelling everywhere?

Today on an hour long commute I noted 3 separate women wearing this same overpowering scent. It’s sort of warm as if it’s a lotion instead of a spray. Smells like pineapple & strawberry sweets mixed with sun cream, like a 3 yo’s sticky hands after a day at the beach. And it’s overwhelming, you don’t just get a waft as someone walks by, it hangs in the air, like someone has dumped a half eaten rainbow ice lolly behind the radiator and you haven’t discovered it until the heat comes in in October. Any thoughts?

Agree that Angel is absolutely rank. My friend wears it as her 'signature scent' and a few times when she's been in my car I've had to open the windows as it's so overpowering.

I like Flowerbomb though and normally I don't like floral scents at all [embarrassed]

MindBodyChocolate · 14/06/2018 10:38

Angel has been around for decades so seems unlikely that you’ve only just noticed it. It smells more candy flossy to me rather than fruity. Maybe flowerbomb like others have suggested?

I’ve also noticed body sprays coming back and ‘layering’ being encouraged - maybe it’s some over enthusiastic layers of different scents!!

EveningHare · 14/06/2018 10:40

Patchouli smells like mould to me and pomegranate noir just smells like cloves

bookbuddy · 14/06/2018 10:48

I cant stand the smell of angel & jean Paul g women or men’s I can smelt it from quite a distance from the wearer too! Hmm

MrsJayy · 14/06/2018 10:51

I bet it is those tropicana body spray things they smell like sun lotion mixed in a smoothie my Dd has a few of them.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 14/06/2018 10:51

@UserX - no, don't do it like that. Compliment them on it and ask what it is as you really love it and want some for yourself. Then you'll know what brand it is so you can avoid avoid avoid!!!

twinkletwinklelittlerainbow · 14/06/2018 10:55

Could be the Victoria's secret body sprays, they're awful! And because they're relatively inexpensive, people spray themselves constantly yacckkkkk

twinkletwinklelittlerainbow · 14/06/2018 10:56

Or Vera wang princess 🤮🤮

MrsJayy · 14/06/2018 10:56

Yeah I don't think it is perfume as such but a spritz scent

IDontBowlOnShabbos · 14/06/2018 10:59

I was hanging around the primark perfume section the other day waiting for my husband to buy an inflatable pink flamingo and quite a few of the scents smelt like you describe. Might be one of them?
Just avoid primark or anything with the word tropical/summer in it and you should be ok.

calilark · 14/06/2018 10:59

I reckon one of the Hawaiian Tropic sprays. They are very sweet spritz type confections. Angel has been around for donkeys, and has a chocolately vibe to it.

Plattypuss · 14/06/2018 11:03

To me, that sounds like it might be Vera Wang Princess Noir, I don't find it too bad initially - sort of fruity and sweet but after a while it reminds me of a glut of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries rotting on a compost heap.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 14/06/2018 11:12

The "lying about liking it to find out what it is" strategy is problematic because they will then think that lots of people love it and it gives them carte blanche to spray on even more of it. One of my colleagues wears something foul and it has been on the tip of my tongue to ask a few times but I really don't want to encourage its use.

I sometimes wonder when people say they get lots of compliments when they wear a certain perfume if it has occurred to them that some of those people may in fact hate it and are just curious. There are quite a few that I hate but I've no idea what they are because I can't bring myself to ask.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 14/06/2018 11:48

If you're on an hour long commute, you could ask them just as you're about to leave the train/bus/coach or they are Grin

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 14/06/2018 11:56

I was waiting for a train yesterday and two teen girls came and stood beside me. One was wearing some strong scent, I didn't know if it was perfume or deodorant. I had never smelled anything like it and sat there blinking it was so strong.

RoseWhiteTips · 14/06/2018 12:02

I love fruity perfumes. Hate hate hate heavy ones which make me feel nauseous. Melon and grapefruit and strawberry any thing sounds like bliss to me!

Might be a Hollister.

This, also it sounds fake!

The smell is so warm & oily, it must be a lotion or body oil, it doesn’t have the sneezy dry quality of perfume, it sort of settles in your sinuses.

My 20yo niece was wearing the most choking, awful perfume last time I saw her. What made it worse is that we were jammed together on the back seat of a car for two hours.

I "complimented" her on her fragrance...."Isn't it lovely?" she replied. "It's Beyoncé Heat". "Mmmm", I said, gagging slightly.

I now live in fear I'll be getting a bottle for my next birthday.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 14/06/2018 13:11

It sounds absolutely revolting. The description reminds me a bit of how I remember Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers - which unfortunately seems to be back in fashion.

I keep smelling Clinique Aromatics Elixir, which is quite possibly the worst perfume on the planet. It smells of some sort of poisonous chemical - like bug spray or rat poison.
I have no idea why, but it seems it is becoming really popular again, especially with the older generations.
The worst thing is that it is so incredibly strong that it can stink out a whole supermarket aisle, and it makes me gag - which is not at all helpful.

I’ll tell you why: it smells like posh patchouli so reminds them of their wild youth. It’s my mums favourite.

My dm liked Clinique too. I like Angel but it smells awful on me.

SmallVera · 14/06/2018 14:18

Estée Lauder Knowing is in that 80's Aromatics Elixir cat piss category.

CointreauVersial · 14/06/2018 14:40

SmallVera - I used to bathe in that stuff! I can't even bear to smell it now.

Ellapaella · 14/06/2018 15:22

Alien. Its everywhere. Smells like Parma violets mixed with toilet duck. Everyone has been wearing it for the last two years. Each to their own but I think it's utterly vile.

WellTidy · 14/06/2018 15:30

Before I opened the thread, I thought the answer would be jo malone pomegranate noir. I hate it, it’s way, way too strong a scent for me, but it is everywhere. I will be staying away from some of the perfumes mentioned on this thread!
