Haircut disaster. Gutted

I went in with lots of pictures, told her I wanted a long pixie that I could push over my ears, like Emma Willis. She seemed to understand and even said she would do it a bit longer than my photos as it would feel too short for me otherwise (my hair was past my shoulders).

I've ended up with it cut over my ears which I didn't want, and really short at the back. I hate it so much. I look more like Bruce Willis than Emma. I told her it is too short and she said it had to be short over my ears or it would be too bulky (so why didn't she say so before she cut it?) and I should go back in a few days if I still don't like it. Why? Is she going to glue it back on?

Why do hairdressers do this? I have a thin scarf tied round my head at the moment. Is there anything else I can do to disguise it or make it grow quicker Sad

I think Emma Willis is the typical type of woman who has a daring hair cut which looks amazing on her because quite frankly she'd look amazing with any haircut as she's so stunning and on us normals it just doesn't work. I went for the demi Moore ghost cut years ago and learnt that lesson!

Atalune · 19/04/2018 18:51

I can’t see a pic.

If it’s long at the front, can you do an really far part to one side to give the illusion of length there?

Also a bright lippy might lift the look and make you feel better?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/04/2018 18:57

If it's long and floppy on top then there's loads you can do with it. Have a mess around trying different ways to wear it. You can get height on top by leaving in a big velcro roller for 10 mins after blow drying or try a quiff or combed over one side or falling forwards?

The hairdresser said she'd give you a free appointment if you go back so how about some highlights or dyed a different colour?

As pps have mentioned, it will have grown an inch in a couple of weeks.. don't panic. You also have the bonus of it being amazingly quick to wash and dry and your hair products last for ages Smile

A short cut takes some getting used to that's all. There's suddenly loads of neck exposed! You might find you suit it better if you dress differently. High necked tops or a crisp white collar look great with short hair, try different earrings or go for an edgy look with bright lipstick, get your nose pierced. Have fun with it.

PugwallsSummer · 19/04/2018 19:09

It's so shit when this happens - the hairdresser should have explained her thinking around cutting it shorter around the ears than the images you brought in, to give you the opportunity to say no.

It will grow much quicker than you think. It won't be long at all before you have the length around your ears that you had in mind - then you can go to a different stylist to get exactly what you want.

In the meantime you will find a way to make it work for you. Look at some youtube tutorials for styling shorter hair, and buy some products / styling tools.

I'm a hairdresser but can't see the pictures to offer some advise

Flisspaps · 19/04/2018 19:19

I'd be annoyed too if that's what it was meant to be OP!Shock

BennyTheBall · 19/04/2018 19:22

There are no photos? How can we opine?

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 19/04/2018 19:22

Thank you all. Your reassurances really are making me feel better Thanks

It's not that long on top, certainly not as long as I'd hoped, so not much scope for styling or covering my ears.

Going back and getting a colour is not a bad idea as I had planned on getting highlights in a few weeks, in fact she did a skin test on me today for it - maybe she would do them for free? I'm dreadful for going back and making a fuss, usually I just wouldn't go back, but I really should this time. I was so clear and I told her how worried I was about going too short- and then she went and did exactly that. She has very short hair by the way, so she probably thinks it's no big deal.

Thanks Fliss.

Oblomov18 · 19/04/2018 19:26

I'm so sorry, but your haircut is nothing at all like the Emma Willis picture you showed her.
I totally understand your upset. You must go back and complain. This is a disgrace.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/04/2018 19:28

Yeah you could go back and ask for your highlights as compensation, or some money off? Or go mad and get it all dyed blonde like in your pic of the model! Short hair can handle bleach.

Maybe because your hair is thick, she felt it needed to be short to your head at the back and sides to avoid a "helmety look" (not a technical term).

I know what you mean about making a fuss. I'm that person that says I love the cut, tips the hairdresser and then goes home and cries Grin

Oblomov18 · 19/04/2018 19:29

I can only see one photo of OP's. But it's abundantly clear that this is a total bodge by hairdresser. Not a minor one. TOTAL
Sorry OP. Sad

CiderwithBuda · 19/04/2018 19:33

That is nothing like any of the cuts you showed her! I’d be upset too.

However it will grow quickly. I think you can get shampoos that are meant to help that although I have no idea if they work. I’d be trying it though.

And yes a change of colour would change it and make it look more funky.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/04/2018 19:51

I think if you grow out the side burns a bit, get your straighteners on the long bits at the back of your neck so they're pulled down and flicking out and lift the top at the crown with your straighteners pulling up vertically and then curling under slightly you can aim for something like this

Forget Emma Willis and work with what you have. Wink

Oh I hate a bad haircut, I had a spell of them a couple of years ago.

I’ve just had a similar cut but i’m Pleased with mine as I wanted what Emma Willis has now and not her longer style. Looks like your hairdresser went shorter on the sides than you hoped?

Is the long top bit long enough to push behind your ears? Can you style it like Emma Willis does pushed back.

Alright1613 · 19/04/2018 21:02

Like this, so you get height at the top which takes away from the short sides.

Me again, this guy is Emma W’s hairstylist, he has lots of videos on instagram of him styling her hair.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 19/04/2018 21:14

Thank you Alright I will look at those videos. No it's not long enough to tuck behind my ears sadly!

I will post better pictures tomorrow.

I promise this is my last post! Blush

For nice knitted head bands I love anthropology’s offerings. They are expensive but comfortable and look good. www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/hair-accessories-headbands

Coveredinbeeeeeeeeeeeees · 19/04/2018 21:23

I couldve written this myself a few weeks ago, exactly the same scenario. I was full on depressed by it. Trust me, the horrible feeling does go away and you will get used to it. I'm not saying you'll like it by any means, but you will start to hate it less. Wash it and style it yourself a couple of times and that will help. After coming home, crying and butchering a scarf with a pair of scissors and tying it around my head I then went to Claires accessories and panic bought £19 worth of headbands! I wore them for about 4 days, then thought fuck this no one other than me cares what my hair looks like!

I didn't think a bad hair cut could make me hate my appearance so much, but it's true what they say, it's only hair and hair grows. You'll recognise yourself again in no time.

RoseWhiteTips · 19/04/2018 21:25

The pic is invisible.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 19/04/2018 22:04

Covered thank you, that makes me feel a bit better to know someone else has felt like this! I actually did butcher my favourite scarf with scissors when I came home and won't take it off! It feels like it will be ages before it will have grown enough for me to stand it.

This is no lie. I was feeling so upset and couldn't concentrate on our usual tv programs because I kept thinking about my fucking hair. So I put Keith and Paddy's Picture Show on thinking it would be funny and take my mind off it, and who pops up in it but Emma bastard Willis. But with the hair I wanted which is plainly much longer than mine! AngrySad

Shifty thank you, that's exactly the style I was thinking of - just spent £9 on hairbands on Prime!
