Haircut disaster. Gutted

I went in with lots of pictures, told her I wanted a long pixie that I could push over my ears, like Emma Willis. She seemed to understand and even said she would do it a bit longer than my photos as it would feel too short for me otherwise (my hair was past my shoulders).

I've ended up with it cut over my ears which I didn't want, and really short at the back. I hate it so much. I look more like Bruce Willis than Emma. I told her it is too short and she said it had to be short over my ears or it would be too bulky (so why didn't she say so before she cut it?) and I should go back in a few days if I still don't like it. Why? Is she going to glue it back on?

Why do hairdressers do this? I have a thin scarf tied round my head at the moment. Is there anything else I can do to disguise it or make it grow quicker Sad

I was a hairdresser for a decade. If you want to post your pic again r PM it to me I can tell you what I think. I know what it feels like to have a bad haircut... it really is upsetting. Hope you feel better soon.

poppyinbloom · 19/04/2018 23:33

Sorry, OP I just looked at the thread again and saw your pc that fliss posted. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Was this your first time to this hairdresser? Do you know how much experience she had? I would honestly call and complain. I hate to recommend that but in your case it's warranted. You didn't get anything like what you asked for and it is MUCH shorter than what you were wanting. There's no reason that it couldn't have been cut to lay over your ears. It wouldn't have been "too bulky." I would recommend growing it out (sadly) and then going to another hairdresser but do a lot of research first.

One thing I remember them telling us when I went to school for this is that "over the ears" to one person can mean something different to one person. It can mean "over the years" as in shorter and cut around the ears or "over the ears" as in laying where it's covering the ears if that makes sense. So you have to be really clear when you communicate with your hairdresser but that's their responsibility as well... I have gone to hairdressers (even as a former hairdresser myself) and said very clearly NOT to do something (pointcutting in my case) and they still did it anyway.

Don't use the word "pixie cut" again to get what you wanted. This isn't a pixie cut. What you got is as short as a pixie cut though. Sorry again that you had this experience. Exercise and sweating will stimulate the scalp follicles and help it to grow.

Chimchar · 20/04/2018 07:35

I feel your pain, but on the plus side, you have really nice ears!
I used to have very short hair...I found that anytime I cut a lot off, my hair needed a few days to 'settle' into a style.
Hopefully within a few days, you will have had chance to play with it and get used to it and won't be feeling quite so horrible about it. BrewCake

Crazyladee · 20/04/2018 09:03

I can't believe the hairdresser didn't exercise a bit of caution taking you as short as you are from shoulder length. I once went from hair past my shoulders to a posh style bob but raised at the back (sorry don't know the official name for it!) and the hairdresser was very nervous and cautious and cut it kind of like in stages through the cutting process. Is this length short enough or do you want more off? No, I want more off. It was done very carefully, stopping to show me the back, making sure I was happy all the way.

I appreciate there's not a lot they can do once they have made the chop, but you will feel better for voicing your unhappiness and you might be able to get your money back/ throw in some freebies etc.

As frustrating as it is, it will grow back and it won't be too long before the sides grow and you can wear it in the style you originally asked for.

Branleuse · 20/04/2018 09:15

I like it tbh

DeepfriedPizza · 20/04/2018 09:22

I feel your pain OP. I went to a new hairdressers with a picture of myself. I had a pixie previously but let it grow to my chin but wanted it back to how it was before. She cut it and I looked like Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders. 3 weeks on, it's now grown and not so harsh.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 09:35

You're all so lovely. Thanks I didn't sleep very well last night.

She knew how I wanted it over the ears, as I pointed to the ears in all the pictures and said I wanted to tuck it behind my ears. And as she started cutting it short she said not to worry, she was undercutting it to remove bulk and I would still be able to tuck it behind my ears. I think she realised she'd gone too far as she started saying stuff like she needed to cut into it as it was so thick, that if she didn't I would look like a mushroom, that when you go short you have to cut it shorter than you think so it grows into how you want it. She definitely knew that I was worried about going too short. 'Long pixie' was the search term I used to find the pictures I showed her. I showed her several photos, I will post more loafer from the laptop instead of the app so hopefully you will all be able to see them.

Poppy I have had my hair cut by her before, she layered my long hair fine. It is quite a prestigious salon that has won awards and she is one of the more senior stylists. Sweating I can definitely do as I'm in peri meno so that's encouraging to know thank you! Smile

"Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders"

GrinGrinGrin
Sorry!

pigmcpigface · 20/04/2018 10:01

I'm so sorry you've had such a disappointing experience!

I'm going to suggest something that is very different from other people - just to add a bit of variety Smile and that is to go shorter. The danger of pixie cuts is that they can easily look a bit mumsy. If you went very short indeed on the back and sides, and longer on top, you would be more rock star! I have my hair cut like this and dyed platinum blonde. It looks absolutely terrific when the roots start to come through.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 10:14

I cannot carry off a very short hair cut unfortunately. I have large features and do not have a pretty face. I have had hair the length I wanted it this time before however and it has looked good. I think the bits over the ears and in the nape make a lot of difference between looking nice and looking butch for meSad

pigmcpigface · 20/04/2018 10:15

Judging by your very pretty ears, you are being very harsh on yourself. Flowers

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 10:24

I do not have pretty ears.

OP don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure your face is lovely.
All I think when I see a woman with short hair is 'yeah you go girl'. It's a brave thing to do. Smile

Qcumber · 20/04/2018 10:26

Get some matt clay or putty and rub it through the top. It'll make it look more edgy and less mumsy

pigmcpigface · 20/04/2018 10:29

You have lovely ears, and the more pictures you post the less I believe your claims about your features. You look like a very beautiful lady!

I think the problem is that this cut is mumsy and a bit staid and not right for you. You need something livelier and more radical! As @Qcumber says - you'd look great with edge.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 10:29

Here are some more of the many photos I showed her, taking pains to point out the hair tucked behind the ears and the length at the back. Remember she said she would actually cut my hair longer than in these pictures!

OP posts:
Qcumber · 20/04/2018 10:32

Your hair really will only take a few months to grow out. I remember I used to get so mad that I'd JUST had a hair cut and was having the tuck behind my ears/felt I had a bit of a mullet going on at the back Grin
So give it a few months, in the mean time get some hair products and mess around with it. You never know you may end up liking it.
Going from long to short hair is always an awkward transition. You have to learn how to 'do' your hair all over again. Watch some YouTube tutorials of people styling pixies. There are A LOT of cool and different styles you can try, you don't have to be confined to how it naturally falls.

pigmcpigface · 20/04/2018 10:33

Yeah, she definitely hasn't looked or listened to you. And the salon owes you to sort this out!

Like you say, though, the question is - how to go forward. She's not going to be able to stick the hair back on, so how do you make what you have got look better? I would go shorter at the sides and back, which will make the top look longer.

Awwww I have had a few bad cuts in my time, it's a horrible feeling. Hopefully it'll grow quickly. Do some head massage with coconut oil each evening if you have time it'll stimulate hair growth. I have had success with this method. Good luck Hun xxxxx

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 10:40

Oh God no. I plan to continue wearing scarves and hairbands until it has grown at least an inch.

I am going to have to ring and speak to her, if only to stop it going round in my head! At the least I want a refund, and ideally I want some extra to go towards the wax and hairbands and the biotin capsules and hair growth shampoo I've found on Amazon. But nothing will make this right other than time.

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 20/04/2018 10:41

Thank you sweetie, I have coconut oil and I can definitely do that.

Hillingdon · 20/04/2018 10:45

You know - the sun is shining and hair grows much more quickly at this time of the year especially as its short. Yes, its not a great haircut but its not the end of the world.

If it was me I would go back and say this really isn't what you were looking for and you are upset at the way its turned out. They might offer you some freebies - it will make you feel a little better perhaps.

At one of the big hairdressers in Cheltenham they state if you arent happy come straight back and they will fix it. So its not completely unacceptable to go back and complain/give feedback on the cut.

Going forward I wouldn't go that short again with such thick hair.

CartoonsAndVodka · 20/04/2018 10:52

I'm sorry you are so upset about the cut. But for next time, I would never ask for a pixie cut again. You got a pixie with a longish top. You wanted a concave bob with an undercut, I reckon.

It will grow back, be kind to yourself in the meantime. Flowers

UnimaginativeUsername · 20/04/2018 10:56

I had my hair cut yesterday and it’s shorter than I asked for (although I still like it). Mine looks fairly similar to yours, I think.

I asked for the something like the Carey mulligan pic (and did say short bob with razor cut ends) but got something that looks like the Ginnifer Goodwin pic. So it’s definitely not what I asked for, but I’m not unhappy.

I spray it with texture spray and dry it to look messy and I think it looks pretty good. And it’ll grow. I think I’m unusually relaxed about the length of my hair though.
