Haircut disaster. Gutted

I went in with lots of pictures, told her I wanted a long pixie that I could push over my ears, like Emma Willis. She seemed to understand and even said she would do it a bit longer than my photos as it would feel too short for me otherwise (my hair was past my shoulders).

I've ended up with it cut over my ears which I didn't want, and really short at the back. I hate it so much. I look more like Bruce Willis than Emma. I told her it is too short and she said it had to be short over my ears or it would be too bulky (so why didn't she say so before she cut it?) and I should go back in a few days if I still don't like it. Why? Is she going to glue it back on?

Why do hairdressers do this? I have a thin scarf tied round my head at the moment. Is there anything else I can do to disguise it or make it grow quicker Sad

I’ve tried showing hairdressers photos of me with the haircut I want. It makes no difference to the end result.

The used to cut my hair like the pictures I showed them when I was younger. Now they disregard what I want and cut what they think I should have. The time before this I ended up really annoyed at the young male hairdresser who just would not cut my hair as short as I wanted. He wanted me to have a weird, slightly mullety bob at least an inch longer than I wanted it to be. I ended up very frustrated and with a haircut I didn’t like.

The only hairdresser who has done a good job (and does not want me to be frumpy) in the last couple of years is on maternity leave at the moment. So I’m having all sorts of problems right now. She’s also the only person who does a decent job with DS2’s crazy hairline and curly hair. I hope she decides to go back to work after maternity leave!

foxyliz26 · 20/04/2018 17:26

Wash it and add definition with wax and mouse and style it in true pixie style , I hate mine every time my hairdresser styles it , I love the cut
, so rush home and style it myself , it will blow into a really nice tousled pixie I am sure

you,ll probably get the knowing look from lesbians , it will be good for your ego ,self esteem we tend to be more choosy than men

flowerslemonade · 20/04/2018 17:59

Yeah your haircut looks nothing like the pictures. I'm not surprised you're upset.

It will grow way faster than you think. It's the perfect time of year for it - getting lighter and turning warm. Maybe massage your scalp, see if that helps it.

I do think you should give the salon feedback. It isn't fair what they did. The pictures are very clear. She should have said if she was going to cut it shorter than your ear, so you could have said no.

BTW it definitely isn't a pixie you wanted, a pixie cut is ultra short, boyish.

lemonsunshinecake · 20/04/2018 18:07

Well for what it's worth I think your hair looks ace

Pasdeprobleme · 20/04/2018 18:29

I think it looks fine too. You can make it funkier if you play around with it.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 20/04/2018 18:30

I agree, it's not awful at all. As with all cuts, it's all about the styling.

Get your straighteners on the fringe so it's falling flat and side swept, you need way more volume in the top and crown; that can easily be achieved with the right tools (look at a few You Tube demos) and get some wax on the ends. You can define small sections to give it some edge by applying wax or similar on the ends with your finger tips.

There's a lot you could do to make it look cool.

Good on you for putting in a complaint. She was a bit scissor happy.
That said, I think you need to find a way to embrace the cut you have now. You can look good with that cut so own it!

OfficerVanHalen · 20/04/2018 18:39

Ahhh i can see why yr upset, but you’ll feel better once you get some product in, and hair grows quicker in warm weather so fingers crossed this heatwave continues. I agree with the others that you have lovely bonny ears. Would you consider maybe taking advantage of having them on show and getting a cartilidge piercing or something? Might make you feel less mumsy too. Or os that maybe a step too far Grin

PippyRose · 20/04/2018 18:45

What about dyeing it a funky colour? When I got my hair cut short I hated it because it made me look 'frumpy and Mumsy' rather than the 'cute and edgy' I was after. I dyed it a bright red and it really made a difference.

Lotsofsausage · 20/04/2018 18:46

your hair is a pixie cut, you asked for a pixie cut. Your hair is like the first pic. The second photos are not pixie cuts, the hairdresser will have been confused.

I can see why you’re bothered, the Emma pic her hair is a layered short bob that’s appeared to have been ducked behind her ears and the top section looks to be quiffed (probably with a blow dryer and a lot of root boosting product to give it the height). It’s all in the styling of Emma’s I’d say. When it’s wet it’ll be a chin length bob probably.

I would take screen shots of Emma’s hair cut from all angles for future reference and as fit miw is just wait a few weeks for it to grow and then get it reshaped somewhere else. It will grow faster then you think! And console yourself that at least it’s not a hair colour disaster, they are far harder to put right. I wouldn’t touch it for 2-3 weeks. After hair dusasters myself, I’ve learned the best thing to do is just wait. Tinkering too soon often makes a bad situation worse.

SundayGirls · 20/04/2018 19:02

*tucked

ShowOfHands · 20/04/2018 19:17

I shaved my head last year and have been growing it since. I usually trim it myself but actually went to a hairdresser this week as it's a tricky length and looking like a mullet.

The hairdresser hasn't understood what I wanted and I have crap hair. Nothing to be done. I've dyed it a bright red and put putty in it. I have head scarves and straw hats. It'll grow and pretty quickly. I've actively decided that I won't care about it and reassess in June when it'll be entirely different.

SukiTheDog · 20/04/2018 19:28

@Alberta, I was only looking at Annette Benning hair, this morning. I downloaded these...

OP, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I think in a few weeks it’ll have grown and you will have gotten used to it. It’s a shock, even though you wanted a “new you”. I’ve been there, where you are now. I won’t tell you to get some interesting jewellery or dangly earrings. It won’t make much difference. You could get some texturiser to take away the fluffy ness but, ultimately, you have to get on with it, let it grow and live with it whilst it does.

Sorry OP. That’s just what I had to do and now have bra strap length hair that I have no intention of having cut (except the 6-8 week trim).

The second picture of Annette Bening's hair is gorgeous. If mine was like that I would be elated Sad

I know I just have to grin and bear it for a few months. I have been looking at Lee Stafford growth products which sound good, and the 'inversion' method which involves massaging your head when it's hanging down between your knees, for five minutes a day. The increased blood flow encourages hair growth apparently. I can manage these things. I reckon that by the time summer proper is here it should be at a length acceptable to me.

Thank you all again for being with me while I rant, sympathising with me and sharing your experiences. I don't have any female friends, only dh and my sons, and they don't understand the importance of my hair to my self image and confidence. Thanks

@FatBallsAnd.... I think you’re well within your rights to be upset and cross. It’s not important when you consider that some people have no hair, there are wars going on, people dying from painful and terrible conditions. And yet....it’s on your head!! And it’s not what you asked for. So yes, it IS important.

Keep us updated OP, where you’re up to in the growth thing 😊

Hey op hair stylist of over 20 years here.

Looking at the pics you posted your cut isn't anything like what you've shown interest in at all.
When I have a client having a restyle like that I will always leave it longer than the pics so when they go home and have a play with it they can get used to it. Quite often they'll call and ppp back in so I can take more off but I'd always rather that.

Having some colour would make a massive difference to your cut and texture of your hair.
Also leaving conditioner on for a good few mins before rinsing will give it a shiney texture.

Having fools weaves back from the fringe tonyour crown in golds/caramels and maybe a baby blonde will add definition and make the top appear longer. Get an all over rich colour through the rest of it and it will totally change how it looks to you. Will also soften it up round the ear area as it will have lots of different tones which will make it softer.

CelticSelkie · 20/04/2018 20:18

I feel dramatic saying ''this happened to me once too'' like it's a life changing accident but it is very upsetting. Even though you look good, she did NOT listen.

CelticSelkie · 20/04/2018 20:21

My advice would be do NOT go back to the hairdressers for regular trims. I did this and if I'd just stayed away from the hair dressers for 8 months then I could have had something longer to work with. I compounded the skin head by going back for a 'shape' every 8 weeks or so. ARGH

whattheactualbleep · 20/04/2018 20:21

Not the cuts but this type colour colour weaving works well on shorter hair to add texture and appear longer.

Prettylovely · 21/04/2018 07:26

Wow no it looks nothing like the pictures, You should definitely get a refund, It is short but you have a good jawline I would get it coloured personally to liven it up. (And never get my haircut their again)

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 21/04/2018 12:54

I've sent an email to the salon for her attention. Hopefully the manager will read it too. I feel a bit sick. I hate confrontation Sad

Rachie1986 · 21/04/2018 13:01

I would have gone in or called as a message can be ignored. But I understand your reasons as I don't like confrontation either!
Your hair will grow really quick, but honestly I don't think it looks bad!
Hope you get it sorted x

FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds · 21/04/2018 13:21

If I don't get a response I suppose I will call or go in. Really I just wanted to have my say without her butting in or making excuses about my thick hair.

I have the owner's mobile number as dh has done work for him, in fact I know where he lives.

Does anyone know if extensions would be possible on such short hair? I'm feeling really down again now after looking at the photos that I attached. I'm wearing a fucking Liam Gallagher bucket hat today, yesterday it was a bobble hat but of course I was boiling hot in it. Haven't been out the house since and have no inclination to.
