There must be a quicker way to do make-up?!

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Every day I wear makeup, I always do:

Primer
Foundation with a beauty blender
Powder
Highlight
Sometimes contour cheeks but only roughly once every two weeks
Fill in eyebrows
Do an eyeshadow for a base colour, not a cut crease or anything
Winged eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

This takes me the better part of an hour. It takes me about 10 minutes to do foundation, as I'm paranoid about blending it in and having the coverage that I want. I look like I wear an average amount of it, not like one of this girls you see on Instagram. It shouldn't take this long, should it?! Am I doing something wrong?Confused

Why don't you do a full face in 15 minutes and then see how much worse it looks. You take an extremely long time. How can it take 59 seconds to do powder? Put brush in pot, quickly brush it all over, tap excess of brush and and then dust off the excess on your face. 15 seconds tops.

An hour Shock
I’d shower, dry my hair, use straighteners, get my makeup on, get dressed and be out of the door for a night out in less than that Shock DP would wonder where the hell id got too.
I don’t wear makeup often but if I’m doing a full face it’s
Primer
Foundation with a brush
Powder
Blusher
Eyeshadow, probably three shades blended
Eyeliner
Mascara
Eyebrows, filled in
Lip liner
Lipstick
10 minuets max

When I was around 17/18 I went through a lot of stress, and became obsessed with perfection, would take an hour and a half to do make up and hair. I would constantly check in every window and use different mirrors, looking at my side view on both sides, how it looked as I turned my head. The more I tried to stop, the worse my anxiety became. I think I only began to recover from it all when having children meant I was forced to find quicker methods.
I do suspect that if I didn't have children to rush to school in the morning, I can easily take half an hour on makeup.
I think we adjust to the time we have available

Hollowtree laser hair surgery is brilliant stuff but it's not permanent. They market it as you will see a permanent reduction but having a course of treatment will not permanently get rid. I have been having it done on an area for over three years and have seen a permanent reduction of by 60 percent but still have to have regular top ups every 2/3 months. I was very disappointed to find this out. Also if you don't keep up ur top ups hair can eventually end up growing back worse then the original state. I'm back in the clinic on Monday to get fuzz free-can't wait!!!!

As for make up taking an hour I couldn't imagine doing that on a daily basis with that amount of time involved. 7-10 mins tops for me.

itsbetterthanabox · 01/12/2017 17:58

What foundation are using? One that suits your skin type and is matched to your colour correctly should blend very easily and quickly.

Thebluedog · 01/12/2017 18:01

How on earth does it take you that long. 10 mind top for me.

Primer
Powder (Estée Lauder all day foundation & powder)
Eye liner
Lip liner
Blusher
Eyebrows
Mascara
Lipstick

PaxUniversalis · 01/12/2017 18:06

Opheliasgoldenwine - do you feel you HAVE to put this much make up on or do you need to wear full make up for work? Can you not wear foundation & primer in 1 or tinted moisturiser (like BB cream), eyebrow pencil, mascara, blusher, lipstick?
No eye shadow, no eye liner, no highlighter. Saves a bit of time.
How old are you?

smudgedlipstick · 01/12/2017 18:06

Although I love using a beauty blender for my base, it takes such a loooong time! For everyday make up, I have found a foundation brush that I like and that blends super quick. It knocks quite a long time off for me. I use my beauty blender for weekends now when I have more time

smudgedlipstick · 01/12/2017 18:13

To add, it takes me around the same time as you when I'm not in a huge rush to get out the door, but on work days it takes me half hour and I don't do a winged eye on work days to save time.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 01/12/2017 18:37

smudge can I ask what it is? I have the RT one Smile

This is a review of the one I'm using. Works best with a more runny/liquid foundation

I do find lipstick (stick lipstick) hard to apply once the tip goes down on it to be fair Sad

dudsville · 01/12/2017 18:48

Hm, I don't take long but I'm going to guess that your so conscientious about your application that you look better than I do.

The bulk of my time is also on the foundation - the joys of rosacea.

From a clean face I apply a moisturiser, a primer, a base by hand, a foundation by brush, blend. That's the bulk of it. I then do eyebrows, eyes and lips. It's 15 mins. I then do my hair and from blow dry it's just over 10 mins. I sometimes leave the house thinking "I bet (insert name of diva) would be horrified at the state of me", and I have a friend who would not consider me to be "done", but I am the sort of person who forgets all that the moment I leave the door.

dudsville · 01/12/2017 18:51

Oh, and I can be dressed in under 5 minutes, unless I'm premenstrual, in which case I have to go through the rigamarole of trying on everything and seemingly purposefully choosing items that look shit on me and together just to make it harder to get on with my day.

reservoircats · 01/12/2017 18:53

I love the finish with a Beauty Blender but now I only use it when I'm going out in the evening rather than daily use. I switched to an Artis brush (Oval 7-the one that looks like a toothbrush) and the time taken to do my foundation has reduced by half. They are expensive but worth it and there are dupes on the internet if you wanted to try it without the splurge. Takes me less than a minute to apply as the brush is large so I do my face in 4-5 swipes! Highly recommend. I do all of the steps you do and more and it takes me 25 minutes if I'm not rushing.

smudgedlipstick · 01/12/2017 20:38

Op, the foundation brush? I really like the Clinique stippling brush, pump foundation straight on brush and buff in.

Ttbb · 01/12/2017 20:46

I do
Primer
Foundation with a blender
Concealer if necessary
Blush
Lipstick/gloss/stain

This takes an absolute maximum if 8 minutes. You may just be over doing it.

TheOtherGirl · 01/12/2017 20:50

It didn't take the make-up artist an hour to do my wedding make up!

I use:
Primer
Foundation (applied with brush)
Concealer
Blush
Quick sweep of very slightly shimmery shadow (as much easier to blend than matte)
Tightline with black kohl
Mascara
Tinted lip balm
Dab of powder on my nose

Takes me about 7-8 minutes maximum.

TheOtherGirl · 01/12/2017 20:51

Also if it's taking ages to apply foundation then you're using the wrong foundation.

Hairq · 01/12/2017 20:55

I do the following most mornings and it takes me just over 5 minutes:

Concealer
Mineral powder foundation
Blusher
Highlighter
Sheer lipstick
Eyelid primer
2 shades of eyeshadow
Eyeliner
Mascara

BillyDaveysDaughter · 01/12/2017 21:03

Blimey - it takes me about 45 mins to get washed, dressed, made-up, hair tidied and out the door. I can't wash my hair as well, it takes an hour alone to wash, dry, flatten and straighten and then I'm drenched in sweat and can't put make-up on!

Moisturiser
Primer
Foundation with fingers then quickly blend
Concealer
Contour if I can be arsed, which is rare and it tends to make me look muddy
Highlight (as above)
Powder
Blush
2 eyeshadow colours plus dark shadow as a liner
Fill in brows
Mascara

Don't wear lipstick, I have dry lips and it always looks shit in a couple of hours. But I can slap on my basic face above in about 15 mins, maybe 25 mins if I'm faffing.

SylviaTietjens · 01/12/2017 21:04

I would take that long if I didn’t have dc. I have rosacea and put on a foundation to cover it. This foundation is like poster paint and takes about 15 minutes to dry properly. Then I have to draw all my features back on as they’ve disappeared under the foundation. On a normal school day I’ll take about 10-15 minutes though.

therealreason · 01/12/2017 21:12

It takes me about 20 minutes to do all of that when I'm getting ready for work. 10 minutes blending foundation is definitely not normal!

Aducknotallama · 01/12/2017 21:30

I wear primer, foundation, powder, eyeshadow, eyebrow pencil, mascara, lipstick and sometimes eye liner. It takes me about 10-15 mins

ZacharyQuack · 01/12/2017 21:59

Brow pomade can take a while, and can often end up looking artificial and "blocky". Have you tried using a brow pencil (I like the one with a wider triangular tip) to fill in the sparse areas, brush through then top with brow gel? You'll get a more natural look and it'll be much quicker.

Try your foundation with a buffing brush or fingers. If you use a full coverage foundation, perhaps try mixing it with a bit of moisturiser or primer to sheer it out, it'll be quicker to blend. It doesn't have to look perfect, skin is supposed to have a bit of texture and some variation in tone.

I love my beauty blender, but it's such a faff to use that I rarely bother.

Wing liner can take a while, have you tried using a more smudgy pencil.

If lipstick is taking a while, try something sheerer that's more forgiving. It sounds like some of the products you're choosing are slowing you down.

I can relate to 3 minutes doing mascara though! I have to go slow otherwise it ends up all over my eyelid!

If you watch a lot of people doing makeup on YouTube or Instagram you can get a distorted view of what makeup should look like. Often a bit less looks a lot better. The looks you see on the internet can look way over the top in real life.
