There must be a quicker way to do make-up?!

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Every day I wear makeup, I always do:

Primer
Foundation with a beauty blender
Powder
Highlight
Sometimes contour cheeks but only roughly once every two weeks
Fill in eyebrows
Do an eyeshadow for a base colour, not a cut crease or anything
Winged eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

This takes me the better part of an hour. It takes me about 10 minutes to do foundation, as I'm paranoid about blending it in and having the coverage that I want. I look like I wear an average amount of it, not like one of this girls you see on Instagram. It shouldn't take this long, should it?! Am I doing something wrong?Confused

My entire routine takes 3 minutes! BB cream, brow pencil, mascara. Little bit of cream blusher. What more is needed for going to work? If I'm doing a fancy pants look, I put some eye pencil on.

BeastofChristmasIsland · 01/12/2017 22:17

Blimey, once I've let the skincare/moisturiser/SPF sink in I do primer, foundation, concealer, powder, bronzer, blusher and mascara in about 5 minutes. If I'm going out and add highlighter, eyeliner and shadow it takes about 8 minutes. I don't think I could actually spend an hour putting on make up, I don't have enough face for that amount of time!

violetbunny · 02/12/2017 02:48

This is quite a helpful tutorial from Bobbi Brown on how to do fast makeup:
m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw6kGdtBg-U

I do a full face of makeup every day (and usually change up the colors/products) and it takes me 15mins.

I would swap the Beauty blender for a decent brush (I use one from Real Techniques and save my Beauty blender for special occasions).

Brows - quick and easy if you use a chunky pencil. I like the Charlotte Tilbury one which has an angled tip and a spooly at the other end.

Winged liner takes me ages - I just do a regular line with a pencil and smudge.

violetbunny · 02/12/2017 02:52

Just to add - I think high coverage foundations are harder work to apply as they are less forgiving. Have you tried a sheerer coverage base for during the week? This might help speed things up.

I often use the Chantecaille Future Skin foundation which is a lightweight gel texture. I have other higher coverage foundations which I leave for when I am going out for dinner etc.

Tantpoke · 02/12/2017 04:07

All I'm getting from this is ditch the beauty blender and stop pfaffing around with your eyebrows and find an easier product.

When I apply make up I go for the works and it takes 10-15mins tops.

serum - wait a minute
moisturiser - wait a couple of minutes
primer - wait a couple of minutes
foundation with fingers or RT brush - wait a couple of minutes
powder - seconds
blusher/bronzer/contour -seconds
eyeshadow applied with one brush and blended with another - a few seconds
hourglass ambient powder - seconds
mascara ( including using eyelash curlers) - 30 seconds
eyebrow stuff (takes 1 second to swipe on) - seconds
lipstick - seconds

Instead of winged eyeliner try a darker shadow maybe on your eyelid and blend at the crease.

OtterInDisgrace · 02/12/2017 04:20

This is the chicken that feeds a family of ten for a week but in make-up form, with everyone jostling to get the quickest time in (they would be the ones feeding the masses from one small chicken).

I’m with you, op. Takes me ages.

And I can only get a couple of meals out of a chicken so I’m even more of a failure.

lalaloopyhead · 02/12/2017 07:04

It honestly only takes me 5 minutes to put my makeup on in the week, I only have half an hour to get ready including showering and drying my hair.

Anything that needs leaving a few minutes I do in between other things so - get out of shower and moisturise, put base layer of clothes on (underwear and tights!), brush hair etc, then primer, dry hair, then slap on rest of makeup which is foundation, blusher, eye shadow (nothing fancy) mascara, clean teeth and then lipstick/glos

Ecureuil · 02/12/2017 07:31

It genuinely takes me 5 mins too. I have 40 mins to get ready (two pre school DC) and I have to get showered, hair dryed, dressed and make up done in that time. Maybe if I had longer, it would take longer.

bigredboat · 02/12/2017 07:33

If you get your brows microbladed and eyelash extensions you'd save nearly 10 minutes a day!

ZaraW · 02/12/2017 10:04

Otter what a strange comment. I really don't think anyone could care less about how long it takes to apply make up. I don't wear much and 5 minutes is plenty of time for me. It amazes me how easily people are offended.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/12/2017 10:10

OP did wonder whether there is a faster way in her post.

Many comments gave useful suggestions and asked relevant questions, so yes, Otter's comment is uncalled for.

magpiemischief · 02/12/2017 10:21

You might find mineral powder foundation, swirled on with a brush, quicker. The coverage can be pretty good as it is buildable and blending is very easy. Also you might find kohl eyeliner quicker but it is a different look to winged. A lip tint is quick to apply also.

wowfudge · 02/12/2017 10:22

I didn’t think Otter’s comment was strange at all. Or that she was offended. I’d be surprised if a lot of people actually do time themselves doing their make up.

I’ve got mine down to about 10-15 minutes and I tweak things depending on how much time I have. I rarely use powder though, brows I use a pencil to fill in and I cannot do winged eyeliner so I either use Avon Glimmersticks or shadow and a brush, but Inonly do that once in a blue moon. If I am going out rather than going to work, I do take longer and do eyeliner, etc. Not sure it makes a blind bit of difference.

roobrr · 02/12/2017 10:26

Mine takes as long as yours tbh, and I don't do winged eyeliner!

ggirl · 02/12/2017 10:36

I also don't think Otter's comment was strange and didn't think she was saying she was offended ...she was making a humorous observation

Lucked · 02/12/2017 10:45

You obviously have a very set look which you could try experimenting with. Look at some videos of simpler looks (I like Lisa Eldridge) and experiment. Could your eyebrows just be filled in a little day to day rather than fully done, I do find full blown eyebrows a little jarring in daytime although less so now that it is so popular. Also winged eyeliner seems ott for most of my downtime.

Still boggling at the time spent on lipstick and mascara. I have to reapply lipstick often so can’t imagine it taking so long.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 11:33

I did today:

Foundation
Powder
Highlighter
Brows
Eyeshadow
Tiny smidge of eyeliner on the top
Mascara

Took me 30 minutes with brows being the biggest issue. I think I know what the problem is. The ABH Dipbrow gives the effect that I like but it's so easy (for me) to mess up and have to fix. I do have a powder eyebrow product by Collection that takes me 30 seconds to apply. Probably better for a daytime look. Thank you all so much for your help Smile

Branleuse · 02/12/2017 11:37

Thats a lot of makeup.

I do moisturiser
foundation
eyeliner
mascara,
lipstick
eyebrows

It possibly takes me 5 mins to slap it on in the morning. probably longer for a night out. I think your routine is too heavy for everyday maybe

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 11:39

It's true that my daytime look can be quite heavy and it doesn't get much heavier if I'm going out for the evening, I only add false lashes, another layer of eyeshadow and a stronger lip etc, as my base is quite 'heavy' iyswim.

omBreROSE · 02/12/2017 11:52

I’m not expecting you to ( obviously)
Smile but ld like to see what your make up looks like?
I suspect you don’t need all that... and if you feel you do - l bet even if you rush a bit , you’ll still look as good!
When we look at ourselves, we tend to see bits/blemishes that nobody else notices.

TheFaerieQueene · 02/12/2017 11:54

Branleuse I’m the same. Less is more I find.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 11:58

If I post a picture for about half an hour could I ask for it to be deleted?

If you like wearing make up and the way you apply it then it doesn't matter if it takes time. It's only an issue if it's impacting on your life, eg making you late for work or you feel enslaved to it.

It takes me ages to do my hair in the morning. I'd rather just get up a bit earlier and take my time with it. It makes me feel more confident about facing the day.

JMAngel1 · 02/12/2017 12:14

I can do my face in 15 minutes if I rush it super quick - longest step for me is def foundation, concealer, powder - takes 10 minutes on a good skin day. Mascara also takes quite long as I apply 3 coats with dry time in between. I don't look super made up just normal really but without it I look shocking! I think the natural beauties can take much less time - maybe just tint moisturiser, blush, lip and mascara would be all they need. I need the big guns!
However, if I'm not rushing to finish my face it can take up to 45 mins as I get super comfy in my snugly dressing gown, have a cappuccino by my side and Youtube videos on my iPad usually showing beauty videos - loooove it and it is my favourite time of the day. Somehow it feels like a valid reason to have a chill at same time - and yes I can do all this with 2 infant school daughters and out of the house by 7.20am.

JMAngel1 · 02/12/2017 12:16

ILostIn. Yes that's exactly right. Everyone has their own priorities - I don't spend anytime on my hair as it's long and curly and I just take it down from its bun overnight, give it a shake and it's done. My face however is a different story!
