There must be a quicker way to do make-up?!

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Every day I wear makeup, I always do:

Primer
Foundation with a beauty blender
Powder
Highlight
Sometimes contour cheeks but only roughly once every two weeks
Fill in eyebrows
Do an eyeshadow for a base colour, not a cut crease or anything
Winged eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

This takes me the better part of an hour. It takes me about 10 minutes to do foundation, as I'm paranoid about blending it in and having the coverage that I want. I look like I wear an average amount of it, not like one of this girls you see on Instagram. It shouldn't take this long, should it?! Am I doing something wrong?Confused

I don't mean to show of but I'm a natural beauty so don't need any make up at all, which is great as I get to sleep in later, which in turn makes me even more beautiful.I am so lucky.

speakout · 04/12/2017 11:43

Mine never takes more than 15 minutes even on special days.

Many days I wear very little.

Today I am mostly at home, may take a trip to the shop, I have a plumber coming this afternoon.
I am currently wearing foundation, concealer, eyeliner and a little mascara, and that's all.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 04/12/2017 11:53

Mine takes 4 minutes.

Foundation
Concealer
Bronzer
Blusher
Eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

For the once a year I ever go out I can really drag it out to about 45 mins with lashes, highlighter, eyeshadow etc. So boring though!

Tumtimes1 · 04/12/2017 12:54

Mine takes 20 mins and I do everything you describe and am a qualified makeup artist x

octonaught · 04/12/2017 13:17

2 minutes for normal leaving the house days

under eye concealer
some kind of creamy foundation / powder thing in a compact
liquid eyeliner (felt tip thing)
cream blush with fingertips so i don't look dead

Going out - maybe 20mins as it so rare and I can't remember how to do half the stuff:
primer
concealer
foundation
powder
eyeshadow
blusher
mascara & eyelash curler
lip liner
matt paint on lipstick

Ibbleobbleblackbobble · 04/12/2017 14:04

blending??
contouring??
ive never done this I think in my day it was rub it in and chuck some blusher on......

primer/moisturizer
foundation with fingers
concealer
pencil liner
shadow
eye brows
mascara
blush

5/10 mins max

if its taking you that long to blend anything you are doing it very wrong, if its taking you an hr to put your face on it probably looks caked!!

Queeniebed · 04/12/2017 14:23

20 min for going out - the full works (not including hair) 5 min for work

Opheliasgoldenwine · 04/12/2017 15:32

@omBreROSE you're so lovely, thank you for everything Thanks

I'm so grateful for all of your comments; they made my night and left me a bit tearful. I've struggled with self- confidence all of my life and your comments really meant a lot.

Few things I'll address:

I saw a few comments asking what the products from the photo were. They were as follows:

L'Oréal Infalliable foundation in the glass bottle
Rimmel Stay Matte powder
L'Oréal Babydoll mascara
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade (then softened by the Collection eyebrow powder)
Bourjois Rouge Edition liquid lipstick

In terms of blending; it's the line on the neck that I get paranoid about. When I was a teenager I had that very visible neck line and I always spend ages making sure I don't have it anymore. Far longer than I probably need to. I also check what it looks like in every light. As a PP picked up on, yes, it's most likely my self confidence that affects how long it takes me, carefully checking etc.

There are so many tips on this thread that I will take on board. I did my makeup today (foundation, powder, highlight, eyebrows, eyeshadow and mascara) and it took me about 20 minutes, so definitely been worth asking for help. I do think that it'll still take me an hour when (on the very rare occasion) I'm going out for the evening/special event etc. I do think I enjoy quite a few aspects of it; me time, time I get to spend on myself etc. Plus making me feel more confident; that's key to me. I'm so grateful for any tips given, I really am. Thank you all so much Thanks

Three mins. If that.
Foundation on under eye shadows...use fingers to apply
Quick swirl of powder
Quick light dust of blusher
Mascara

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 05/12/2017 07:32

Less than 5 mins: foundation, brows, mascara, lipstick. Maybe liner. I really can't be bothered with more faff than that in the morning. OP, I bet you'd look fine - maybe better - with simpler makeup.

nannybeach · 05/12/2017 09:01

Teenagers often have a visible neckline I hate that, you go to Boots or Debenhams, the younger ladies at the makeup counters seem to think its OK to wear a darker than their skin tone foundation in the winter, those mineral ones eem to look worst. As I said before, your foundation should perfectly match your skin tone, there is no visbiel neck line!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/12/2017 09:26

I went to an YSL counter yesterday.

They have a two foundations, I've heavy, the other one heavier.

I tried one called Ecrin something, and it was the heaviest, fullest coverage I've ever seen. They also asked if I wanted a shade to warm up my skin, so basically I would have ended up wearing a mask two shades darker than my face.

CrypticClues · 05/12/2017 10:19

Hey, I can't see your pic - but from what you've said about the products you use - how about Benefit 'Precisely My Brow' pencil. It's a softer look than Dipbrow, but would be easier to control. I use Glossier Boy Brow, and love it, but that might be more natural and less defined then you like.

Try the RT stippling brush instead of beauty blender for foundation. You could even put your foundation on with fingers and use the brush just to buff through any edges on your neck which may be a quick option. It's possible that your foundation isn't a good match for your skin tone or type if it's a lot of effort to blend... (I haven't seen it though)

I like a kohl eyeliner, smudged in slightly with a dark shadow - try it! It's nice and defined, but so much quicker than a liquid line.

SingingSeuss · 05/12/2017 10:25

That Sounds like hard work. I do, lippy and mascara on my way out the door for school run (about a minute), mineral powder plus above if I am going I. The office ( about 5 mins), add in eyeshadow and liner for a night out ( extra 5 mins). I don't really know what countouring is, it sounds complicated though so maybe cut that out if you need to save time?

GrandDesespoir · 05/12/2017 20:03

Bloody hell. Shock

I'm fairly sure Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Ava Lovelace, Clara Schumann, Malala Yousafzai or even Margaret Thatcher didn't devote an hour every day to beautifying themselves.

Sorry if that sounds disparaging, but surely there's more to women than what we put on our faces every morning? Confused

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/12/2017 20:13

But why is it a bad thing GrandDesespoir?

Of course there is more to women that what they put on their faces. I use the time to plan my day, to think of how I feel, I let my mind wander. Sometimes I daydream, sometimes use the time to pull myself together.
It's my time, it's almost meditative. I feel better for it.

It's not reductive of me as a person, it doesn't make me less of someone.

Not every woman is a Nobel laureate or a pioneer in an area, neither should we be.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/12/2017 20:16

Also, yes, I do make up my face, but not all I do.

I'm a professional and I'm very good at what I do.

GrandDesespoir · 06/12/2017 10:05

But why is it a bad thing GrandDesespoir?

Because society is too prone to judging women by how we look. Men are also judged by their appearance, to some extent, but they don't have to go through the ridiculous charade of pretending they don't have body hair, of painting on eyebrows or contouring 37 different shades on their cheeks, or hiding their nipples or making their eyelashes look longer and more luscious, of wearing high heals to push their chest out, etc., etc.

So by allocating so much time, money and effort to make-up we are subscribing to that view which, in my opinion, is not helpful to women.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/12/2017 10:33

Make up makes me feel better, and I choose what I do, so I, as a woman find it helpful.

The make up industry provides employment and earnings for thousands of women, surely that's a plus too?

nannybeach · 06/12/2017 11:47

Course you dont have to wear makeup, my DH actually hates it. I wear a little espcially in winter, for ME, no-one else, makes me feel cheerful, covers up, scars from chickenpox, etc. my DD suffered from alopecia in her 20s, so if nothing else "paints" on some eyebrows every day
