There must be a quicker way to do make-up?!

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Every day I wear makeup, I always do:

Primer
Foundation with a beauty blender
Powder
Highlight
Sometimes contour cheeks but only roughly once every two weeks
Fill in eyebrows
Do an eyeshadow for a base colour, not a cut crease or anything
Winged eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

This takes me the better part of an hour. It takes me about 10 minutes to do foundation, as I'm paranoid about blending it in and having the coverage that I want. I look like I wear an average amount of it, not like one of this girls you see on Instagram. It shouldn't take this long, should it?! Am I doing something wrong?Confused

5 minutes, maybe 10 for a night out:

sun cream (I count this with makeup as I do it just before)
mascara
foundation
sometimes a nude lipstick
eye shadow on a night out

Why do you need powder? To set the other stuff? Maybe you could get around that with longer lasting makeup. Fill in brows? What for? I've not heard anybody say 'doesn't she have nicelly filled brows'? Eye liner I just can't manage, but I hate the winged stuff anyway.
I don't really know what highlighter is for. Do you need that every day?

magpiemischief · 02/12/2017 13:08

Gwen, I have not found a foundation I could wear without powder. My face often sweats and the foundation just melts off. I would forgo liquid / cream foundation rather than powder. I happily will wear powder on its own and like powder foundations.

If brows are sparse or gappy, a lot of people like to fill them in. I never experienced wanting to until I underwent Chemotherapy and when I lost hair on my brows I saw the need.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/12/2017 13:14

Ah, Ok I understand your point about eyebrows now though I personally don't think sparse eyebrows look bad. I'd probably prefer them to very bushy ones. Eyebrows give your face some shape but are not nice in themselves.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/12/2017 13:16

A friend told me that no.7 has a foundation that's liquid but turns into a powder when it's on. Could that mean not needing separate foundation and powder?

On the other hand, do you think everyone needs powder and that I should use some too? If so, does anyone have a recommendation for pale skin, not too expensive?

OtterInDisgrace · 02/12/2017 13:16

No, I wasn’t offended in the slightest and yes I was just making a rubbish joke, which thankfully ggirl and wowfudge realised.

I don’t even eat chicken Grin

I don’t time myself putting on make up either but know it takes ages and dearly wish I could do it in 10 minutes, so am following the thread with hope I pick up some tips!

RoganJosh · 02/12/2017 13:20

I think you can make a public profile picture, which you can then change whenever you like?

TheOtherGirl · 02/12/2017 13:23

If your brows are sparse could micro blading be an option? My friend has it done and it looks fantastic, defined but very natural.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 13:26

@RoganJosh is that for the laptop site?Smile

Gwen, personally, I find powder quicker and easier to apply than liquid or cream foundation. So I don't think a liquid to powder would necessarily save time.

As for whether you need powder, i would say it depends on how your foundation sits on your skin without it. If it stays on and you don't look overly oily, I would say no.

Most make up brands do good pressed powders. Colour ranges from translucent to more pigmented and opaque. Finish from silk like to very matte. Brands range from having organic powders to high tech finishes to say very matte all day. If you look at online shops they usually include reviews. There are face powders to suit many different skin types and preferences of finish.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/12/2017 13:31

I think you can get an eyebrow tattoo make up to do at home that lasts for a week? That might save time? It's called Wunderbrow. No idea if it's any good though.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/12/2017 13:32

You might hate it and be stuck for a week with awful eyebrows. Grin

I'm happy to upload a profile picture @omBreROSE ?Smile

Ok Ophelia
If you don’t mind? Maybe we could give some suggestions and you could delete it after a bit? Smile

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 02/12/2017 13:47

I can do mine in under 10 mins. Primer, Foundation, blusher, contour, highlighter, bronzer, eyeshadow, mascara, brows, setting spray.

userofthiswebsite · 02/12/2017 14:15

I know this isn't the point of the thread but don't you use blusher?

Blusher makes such a difference for me.

Re using foundation with the b.b it takes me probably 2-2.5 mins, but things like highlighter are more like a 20 second job.

Even Youtubers who use say 15-20 products when doing a 'look' for a tutorial take maybe 20 mins.

Ecureuil · 02/12/2017 14:19

Ah, Ok I understand your point about eyebrows now though I personally don't think sparse eyebrows look bad

Mine are very unevenly sparse. They have gaps in them from where I over plucked as a teenager. I have to fill the gaps!

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 14:21

@omBreROSE (and anyone else who's interested) there's a photo in my profile Smile

Disclaimer: there's someone else in the photo as I don't really take selfies of myself. This person is aware and gave permission to me sharing this photo.

I think the products that you use can make a huge difference in how long it takes to do make up. I love doing my make up and find it really relaxing, but in the last year have actually changed quite a few things to make it much quicker and easier.
My whole routine probably takes 5 minutes or so. I have found that faffing around with lots of different brushes etc just takes up a huge amount of time and really doesn't make much difference and have altered a few things to try and exclude some of them. However one thing I will say that the condition of the skin hugely affects how long it takes to do make-up. I went through a stage of bad acne a few years ago, and doing my foundation and concealer took ages. When my skin is clear and glowing everything is so much quicker.
I use

Foundation - Lily Lolo mineral foundation. This takes minimal time to do as you just sweep it on and buff it in really quickly and it looks natural. You can vary the coverage with how much you use.

Highlighter - Becca shimmering skin Perfector in liquid to highlight. Easy to apply with fingers and not too in your face.

Blush - Becca liquid beach tint in raspberry. Again apply with fingers. These 2 Becca products give a lovely effect together as they just blend into one another.

Lips - Burt's Bees Tinted lip balm. Easy to apply and looks nice and fresh. Or lanolips.

Eyeshadow - By Terry eyeshadow stick or any other eyeshadow stick. Laura mercier is also good. Just swipe across and job done. Depending on the colour I'll sometimes smudge it out a bit with a brush.

Winged eyeliner - I used to always use gel eyeliner in a pot with a brush, but again it's time consuming so finally found that collection pen eyeliner stays on just as well and takes seconds to do.

Mascara - 60 seconds max.

Brows - Benefit Gimme brow just brushes on in seconds or the W7 dupe is also good.

omBreROSE · 02/12/2017 14:24

I tried to see your pics, but unfortunately they aren’t showing up for me? Smile

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 14:25

@omBreROSE I did it on my phone but on the desktop site 🤔

Skyllo30 · 02/12/2017 14:27

I do the same minus the winged eye liner - I just do a thin line of liquid liner. Takes 10 minutes. Could you drop the wings?

What foundation are you using? I use a beauty blender too and it only takes a few mins.

omBreROSE · 02/12/2017 14:36

I’ll try it that way! :)

SwedishEdith · 02/12/2017 14:38

What is a beauty blender??

I take 5 minutes
Primer - only from this week
BB cream
Concealer
Blusher - a stick thing and then rub in roughly
Fill in eyebrows
Two eyeshadows
Eyeliner
Mascara
Lipstick

I've seen people on the train taking ages though, faffing around with all sorts of creams and brushes to get a very heavily made up look. Fascinating to watch but so time consuming, especially for a daytime look.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 14:44

For all those who have asked, I use either L'Oréal, MAC or Revlon foundation.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 02/12/2017 14:44

@omBreROSE Is it working? If not I'll pop it on here Smile
