do you shave or wax genital area?

I hate shaving! it usually gives me an ugly rash after a day and I find it difficult because I have a longish labia on one side which gets in the way. Even if I pull it tight to one side I still can't get a smooth shave because the razor is too wide.. if that makes sense..

I'm considering waxing instead. Any of you girls do this? Any do's and don'ts and what product do you use etc.?

or do you just pay to get it done professionally?

oh and how long until the hair grows back?

thanks girls x

I'd quite like to go to a salon, but a friend who I work with went a couple of weeks ago and an ex-year 11 student from her set 4 was the therapist. Blush

IguanaTail · 11/11/2015 18:51

Couldn't risk it.

A friend of mine did my first wax...chatted about our dinner plans while I was on my knees, doggy styley while my friend ripped hair from my arse crack Hmm

IoraRua · 11/11/2015 18:58

Ohmygod Iguana Grin
I'd have wanted to sink through the floor!

jamtartandcustard · 11/11/2015 18:59

I'm currently natural as I'm too lazy to shave and too chicken to wax but don't like it so saving for IPL in the new year/post baby.
Salons are always having deals on groupon just make sure you get the one that does Brazilian/Hollywood/bikini/whatever your preference is

IguanaTail · 11/11/2015 19:02

She did. I was absolutely gobsmacked. She's like that though.

I had a girl in my y11 class on work experience when I went to get my hair done. She washed my hair. It was excruciating and I've never wished less for the massage bit with the conditioner. Mortifying.

I would definitely have had to walk out and hand in my resignation if I went to get anything done down under and an ex student was doing it. (Or even around).

FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 11/11/2015 19:05

Christ on a bike the comment about it the 70's being cool again was a joke.

Keep your hair on.

maybemyrtle · 11/11/2015 19:09

I don't care what people do or don't do with/to their bush, it really doesn't interest me.

It does concern me though how naive some people are about the way that the porn aesthetic (the Hollywood being just one example) has been adopted and mainstreamed into society. You don't have to have seen page 3 to have been influenced by it.

mmmuffins · 11/11/2015 19:14

I wax myself. Never been to a salon.

I do my labia and the hair that runs onto my thighs. I leave the "front triangle" as we seem to be calling it. I use this wax in a warmer. I also do my legs and armpits.

I try to do it once a month. The hair doesn't all grow back at once, as hair grows in cycles, so even though some has grown back in a month it is a patchy covering. For this reason the first time you wax will be the most intensive, as you are at full hairiness. You will be less hairy for subsequent waxes unless you leave it for months in between. It is probably ideal to get professionally waxed the first time as they will be much faster and more thorough than you. I was too shy for this though!

If you decide to do your own bikini waxing, my tips are to trim the hair before you start, and to apply only small patches of wax.

Afterwards it feels very nice, and does improve the sensation during sex. And I don't have coarse hair sticking out of my swim suit.

I find it much better than shaving. No awful red bumps, no shaving every few days, hair grows in more softly and less noticeable.

FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 11/11/2015 19:14

I really don't care whether you dye it blue.

However re all the reasons being given:

Snagging in sanitary towels - still less painful than waxing
Cleaner - think that's nonsense to be honest. You're either clean or you're not.
Sex better - not in my experience but your experience is yours.
However you've got me re grey pubes, that is a real bummer.

I do think there are social and other influences to conform to be hairless.
That's a valid point and there's no need to jump down my throat for saying it.

TillITookAnArrowToTheKnee · 11/11/2015 19:14

Yes, Im sure I was influenced by that 17 years ago when I started removing it all Hmm

Mrsrochesterscat · 11/11/2015 19:16

My word, what's with all the gilded insults?!

All these women who take time out of their lives to vilify women for making their own choices about their own body are shameful! It's akin to women being vilified for daring to drive, or daring to shown an ankle or daring to get an education.

Thankfully, women in this country, in this century, have the freedom of choice. You drag us back to the dark ages by trying to shame women into conforming to your insinuation that the mark of a "true" woman is to retain a hairy fanny.

maybemyrtle · 11/11/2015 19:19

Unless you lived in complete isolation, away from all media sources and people, of course you were influenced by society...

herecomesthsun · 11/11/2015 19:22
  1. can't be bothered. Like, 70s vibe is in man.
  2. I would however laser for convenience were I motivated and get a lumea.

Is this not the most overdone subject on Mumsnet?

Other than maintenance washes in the washing machine?

expatinscotland · 11/11/2015 19:26

'Yes, Im sure I was influenced by that 17 years ago when I started removing it all hmm'

I started removing mine in 1981 and my pubic hair in 1984.

'Other than maintenance washes in the washing machine?'

And how often do you shower or bathe threads.

dementedma · 11/11/2015 19:32

It's the white pubes which are the worst.....so depressing!

maybemyrtle · 11/11/2015 19:35

Needascarf, as I've already posted, I really don't care what you or anyone else chooses to do, or whether you personally discussed pubes or watched porn or waxed to please another (I've not said anything about any of those anyway). It's none of my business. What is everyone's business is the mainstreaming of the porn aesthetic in western society and how that can affect self-perception. Think we're talking at cross purposes to be honest.

UmbongoUnchained · 11/11/2015 19:37

I'm too scared to wax but find shaving so painful!! What's hair removal cream like in terms of re growth?

mrsmugoo · 11/11/2015 19:43

"mainstreaming of the porn aesthetic"

Oh for god sake some people just prefer less pubes than others.

peggyundercrackers · 11/11/2015 19:47

I shave mine with a pink sparkly razor. Hated hair from when I was very young, early secondary school anyway which would have been about 1981. I hadn't seen any porn and didn't know it existed. I hadn't had a boyfriend that was intimate by then either. I wasn't influenced by anyone or anything, it was just the way I felt.

Maybe not everything is influenced by porn, maybe 18yr olds are but I'm nearly 50 and definitely am not.
