do you shave or wax genital area?

justonesherryformedicinalpurpo · 11/11/2015 12:16

I hate shaving! it usually gives me an ugly rash after a day and I find it difficult because I have a longish labia on one side which gets in the way. Even if I pull it tight to one side I still can't get a smooth shave because the razor is too wide.. if that makes sense..

I'm considering waxing instead. Any of you girls do this? Any do's and don'ts and what product do you use etc.?

or do you just pay to get it done professionally?

oh and how long until the hair grows back?

thanks girls x

I have a bikini trimmer for mine, I think the dp uses the trimmer he uses for his chin.... We both trim it down so we don't have to fight our way through it Wink

Queenbean · 11/11/2015 19:51

Get rid of it all apart from a strip. It is delightfully low maintainance - I shave about once a week

DP couldn't give a shiny shit how it is but I prefer it that way.

The comments on here are ridiculous / v funny. Isn't choice a wonderful thing?

TillITookAnArrowToTheKnee · 11/11/2015 19:51

Influenced how? No internet. No magazines. No porn. No elder sisters. No mates doing it. My mother only shaved her arm pits.

Its a sensory issue.

Are todays teens influenced via porn/Instagram/etc? Probably. Was I? No, cos the fuckers didnt exist thank fuck

QforCucumber · 11/11/2015 19:53

Started getting rid of all mine at 16, was shaving bikini line one day and kind of slipped and made a bald patch across the middle haha - decided it looked rather odd (though noone was looking at it) so got rid of it all, and stayes that way.
Am 28 now, and discussing this with friends a few weeks ago (someone asked if anyone could recommend a salon) out of 4 of us the same age I'm the only one who goes 'all off', 2 have a 'landing strip' and the other a triangle. So really I'd say we gave all made our own choices there.
Not saying fashion doesn't dictate ideas, but if you have a problem with that then do you also have a problem with eyebrow shaping? Contouring? Different trends in hair styles/colours? All of these things hve changed in popularity over the 12 years I've been removing my hair!

StrumpersPlunkett · 11/11/2015 20:02

I am a full on 70's bush
Hairy pits
Hairy legs

I don't judge those who remove hair
But those who do remove hair seem to judge me

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 11/11/2015 20:05

I'm quite liking the sound of laser hair removal. If anyone has any experience would you mind telling me

  1. how much is it
  2. does it hurt
  3. how many treatments are needed

Thanks

I have no idea why people would have a problem with shaving or waxing?

Personally I prefer very little or no pubic hair. I think a big hairy bush is a bit gross!

I shave it monthly with Gillette 3 blade razors, I don't use shave gels just shower gel.

Top tip: witch hazel gel is brilliant to prevent and cure shaving rash. You can buy it in SuperDrug and boots. I've had shaving rash before and tried this and never had it again. It's ace! It also cured a bad rash in about 2 days

Bananajam · 11/11/2015 20:08

Waxing would be perfect for me if I didn't get ingrowing hairs and I didn't have to go back so frequently! It was less painful than having my shins waxed and looked much nicer than shaving results. My beautician was lovely, not embarrassed and quite happy to wax my bikini area. I shave regularly because otherwise I would have a bikini line that almost joins up with my leg hair and I prefer it neat and tidy.

It's my bush, my business! I also shave my armpits and legs.

StrumpersPlunkett · 11/11/2015 20:09

"Personally I prefer very little or no pubic hair. I think a big hairy bush is a bit gross! "

You make my point exactly.. People making comments about porn and pre pubescent are no different to you telling me that my body hair is gross!!

Sallyingforth · 11/11/2015 20:23

I've never wanted to shave mine, but fortunately it is very fine and soft. DP once came away with some in his teeth and I offered to trim it but he insisted he preferred it as it was so we're both happy.

On nudist beaches I find it's about 50/50 at all ages.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 11/11/2015 20:32

Anyway, I wonder how you wannabe baddies will cope in older age when the creep of foliage is ever increasing yet the flexibility and the will to wax is on the wane...?

Really? If anything most old ladies have very sparse hair growth.

beavington · 11/11/2015 21:03

I have scarring from abscesses on my groin so I'm too embarrassed to get a professional wax. Ive shaved it all off a few times and prefer it but hate the regrowth.

Any fanny experts wanna tell me how its normal to have scars down there and no one would bat an eyelid if I got it out??

Bunbaker · 11/11/2015 21:12

"I'm the same as Till, did it before I knew porn even existed and had nothing to do with looking good for a boy or anything like that"

There must be some kind of peer pressure to do so though. I am 57. When my friends and I were 14 it never occurred to us to remove pubic hair.

'There must be some kind of peer pressure to do so though. I am 57. When my friends and I were 14 it never occurred to us to remove pubic hair.'

It occurred to me. And there was no peer pressure or internet access. I did not know what porn was nor did anyone I knew. I was very hairy, with dark hair and pale skin. I didn't like how it felt or looked. I felt like you couldn't see me for all the hair. It was also hot and trapped sweat and I lived in a very hot climate. I liked to wear bikinis and I didn't want hair poking out. So I got rid of it. I was having Brazilians back when you had to find a salon with actual Brazilian techs in it.

Will definitely try IPL at home.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/11/2015 21:35

I epilate, I've been single for years, my fanny, my choice.

NorthernLurker · 11/11/2015 21:49

I think that if you have hair in a place you don't want it then it's fine if you want to get rid of it. It's not fine for somebody specifically to EXPECT you to get rid of it. It's not fine for you to feel you have to get rid of it. It's not fine to be attacked for getting rid of it and it's not fine to be attacked for keeping it.

I shave my arm pits, my legs about twice a year and I don't go near anything else btw.

Mine's like a bloody forest but just will not get it waxed, unless of course DH starts to have a back, sack and crack.

TillITookAnArrowToTheKnee · 12/11/2015 08:07

YAWN. Bored of repeating myself now, so Im not not going to.

Scars: I have a rather horrid one from my first birth. Nobody has ever commented on it.

BrendaFlange · 12/11/2015 08:17

No, have never removed any pubic hair.

Trimmed it slightly a few times.

Have had a great sex life, many appreciative partners, two long term partners, not one ever commented or reacted adversely, and I have no bad reaction to my on hair , so all is fine.

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2015 08:39

What I find really depressing is the number of posts on threads about pregnancy and childbirth where women are genuinely worried about the fact that they have pubic hair, talk about being ashamed of it and feeling the need to apologise to their doctors and midwives for it. I think that really shows that there has been a societal shift.

I am old enough to remember when women were campaigning against compulsory shaving on maternity wards- it was seen as controlling and demeaning to expect women to be hairless to give birth. On the same scale as compulsory enemas. Even 20 years ago when I had my first child, getting rid of our public hair as just not something we considered.

Something has changed the way we think about our pubic hair. And it does seem to me to be an interesting discussion. I don't know why so many people are so insistent that societal pressures have no influence on them at all- they do on all the rest of us!

Bunbaker · 12/11/2015 08:44

I so agree Bertrand.

I feel sad for 15 year old DD who will be under pressure to conform to what is now the societal norm for teenagers. I imagine a teenage boy will be repelled by the idea that women have pubic hair.

SparklyTinselTits · 12/11/2015 09:06

Not being funny...but isn't the while childbirth process easier for midwives if there isn't a hedge of pubes blocking the view down there?? Blush

SparklyTinselTits · 12/11/2015 09:06

Whole* not while
