Things that annoy me on S&B because

yes I'm in that type of mood today . . .

The main one is the often commented 'oh you can only wear that if you're tall and thin'.

I mean if you have the figure of a model it goes without saying surely you can pretty much wear anything.

But what are the rest of us meant to wear.

It may look best on someone tall and slim but that doesn't mean if you're not those things that you still can't look good.

Oh and it is allowed for people to spend £££ on clothes - just because some people don't it doesn't make those who do bad people.

And relax . . .

I am bored of the 'check my profile picture' how old am I? threads.... I always want to post 'oh christ you've had a hard life' or 'yes, you look shit'.

This is currently on tonight:

'Have you ever made an extra hole in a shoe strap? If so, what works best?'

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH....................

Love the way this thread set out to knock the judgmental and has now become super-judgmental! One favourite of mine has already been condemned.

Nevertheless, have had masses of great ideas and constructive suggestions from S and B.

DarrellRivers · 05/06/2011 20:44

Mmecholet, surely everyone has tried to do that with varying degrees of success depending on what they used. (generally something sharp)
I found a pin didn't work as well as a metal skewer

Grin Madammecholet - likewise the ones who say am I fat and they're a teeny size 8 in a bikini Envy

I love the big budget threads - who was the poster who was expert on hermes - sofia something or other.

No-one has ever commented on me having had botox either - apart from DH routinely comments about a week after my top-up how I look a lot less tired Smile

Oh and the threads where people slag off boden - i mean you don't have to buy their stuff so if you don't like it don't buy it.

Oh and when someone posts about having some type of cosmetic surgery and we get lots of Sad about their sad lifes if they're so shallow to do this - especially when the OP has probably said how much impact their boobs/tummy/nose has on their life.

And now I'm on a roll....

The ones who say

" I have just maxed out my third credit card and blown out my overdraft, should I buy this lovely dress at £500. I've just so got to have it! My dh/dp has no idea about how much I spend on clothes and I'm worried we can't pay the bills this month"

And there is a chorus of " oh yes buy it , you deserve it, it's an INVESTMENT"

I want to scream " spend the money on counselling you silly cow, you need help"

And I wonder what the response on mumsnet would be to a man who said he was running up debts , couldnt pay bills etc and his wife /partner didn't know

It's so bloody 1950s, oh you are just the little wifey, you can't be expected to worry your pretty little head about money

This isn't anything to do with admiring lovely clothes and rejoicing In others good fortune. If you have £4k per month disposable income to spend on clothes then good luck to you. You earned it /won it on the lottery/inherited it/whatever. Enjoy!

My problem is witn those who Enable Women who clearly have a problem rather than trying to help them.

But I realise this is an unpopular view on mumsnet and I fully expect to be misquoted and lambasted for it

Kristina - you always come out with that and seriously where have you ever seen anyone post that?

I have NEVER seen anyone advise someone in debt to buy a £500 dress on here. I think anyone who posted that would get a completely different response ime

Report
MrsCampbellBlack · 05/06/2011 20:52

Quite - practically every response to buying big £££ items is yes but only if you can afford it.

So much about S&B annoys me that I rarely even post on here any more, preferring to be stylish and beautiful among people who are not liars, malevolent lurkers or fantasists.

Not keen on the bitter "I could feed my family...." types either.

Fortunately am in contact with most nice S&Bers on FB. I do however routinely miss dexter, tattycoram and carriedabai.

In the meantime, I am enjoying being reasonably tall, reasonably slim, reasonably well-dressed, having a reasonable disposable clothing income to spend anywhere from charity shops to NaP - and - gasp!! still bringing my children up successfully and happily.

Sadly, I have a crap kitchen though. And probably serious issues that need addressing in my marriage/ friendships/ life Smile

Never, ever spend money on face cream. Just use any old crap they give me as freebies from lancome, and when that runs out some £2 stuff from tesco. However, I have worn factor 50 on my face for years and never sit in the sun.

I don't spend money on face wash either, just a bit of oil and a hot cloth. I do like Lancome Bifacils though, gets rid of all the mascara and so is worth £20.

KristinaM I've seen you post about this mythical debt-ridden neglected housewife a couple of times, but I am struggling to recall anyone who has posted anything like you have just mentioned.

Getorf - have you had botox yet? Am sure you were considering it? Quite agree re. bifacils too.

Miss you too LTEC :( Was thinking about you the other day and wondered what had happened to you. Hope you and you lovely family are still fabulous!!

Yes this has turned hugely judgmental now but isn't it good to get it off your chest every once in a while?

I have had a kicking for admitting to having had cosmetic surgery on here and to wearing Boden. Don't know which was considered the bigger crime Hmm !!

I hate the ones where you offer lots of suggestions but none of them are quite right and the OP appears to get the huff that you aren't totally understanding of their needs. If you are that fussy why not take a look on Shop Style yourself?

KristinaM · 05/06/2011 21:04

Actually I think ii have posted on this subject twice in 8 years which is hardly " always" Hmm

And yes, I have seen this type of thing on s and b threads but I'm sorry I didn't keep a note so I could link. Will book Mark it next time

Ad yes, noddy, mrs c b , that's exactly the kind of response I would have expected from sensible mumsnetters . Which is why in was so Shock and Sad. It seems more like some other huggy kiss websites ( not mentioning any names) and not at all like straight talking mumsnet

MarshaBrady · 05/06/2011 21:05

S&B is still pretty good, nice people. Links to nice clothes. Good stuff.

CointreauVersial · 05/06/2011 21:05

I have a chuckle at those threads when the OP says "find me a dress for a wedding etc. etc." and then proceeds to shoot down every single one of the links supplied "nah, don't like the sleeves/don't like the colour/length/not my taste....."

Meanwhile, someone else on the thread goes "oooh, I like that one, I might buy that meself", and the whole thread peels off on a tangent, while the new person gets set up with their wedding wardrobe, with the picky OP completely forgotten about.

I've been on S&B for years and have never come across MNers "enabling" people with debt issues to buy expensive clothes, but surely MN HQ pull those comments as soon as you report them Kristina? I would hope so!

Personally, I will never forgive S&B for pushing me towards tunics, leggings & boots and Birkenstocks when I was in a post dd style rut.

Report
tulpe · 05/06/2011 21:07

Wow LTEC that's quite a statement about other MNers, no? Hope you haven't been on the receiving end of some nasty business on here.

I love S&B though it is best read on my phone and not here on my PC with my creadit card to hand Grin

God I could have done with S&B when I bought some Georgina Goodman boots years ago pfft. Some sort of suction thing meant I couldn't get them on or off without dh's help.

She is married to H Winestein, wonder if she is a proper designer.

Dexter - you made me laugh so much one day - some-one had posted here in error I assume about some awful court case in the news and you said 'but what did she wear' - honestly I laughed at that for ages Smile

Sorry - i started this thread in a grumpy mood after seeing yet another 'you can only wear this if you're skinny and tall comment' - but yes I still like S&B and get ridiculously excited over stuff - BBH anyone - free to a good home.
