Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I get behind Wales and Scotland. And my Scottish and Welsh friends all seem to want England to do well, if not all out supporting. I suppose some do and some don't! It would go both ways.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 12/07/2024 11:03

England are our cartoon nemesis, I don't really care about football but the 'anyone but England' thing has been going on for so long it's just what we do. There's no real malice in it, not in my circles at least.

Gcn · 12/07/2024 11:05

There are very few Scottish football fans who will be hoping England win tonight. The vast majority will be hoping they get absolutely humped.

Beanieton · 12/07/2024 11:05

I think it's an outward thing. Jokingly I want Spain to win, but would be pleased for England if they won. As the poster above says, there is no malice in it for the vast majority of Scots. It's just a historical rivalry which will always be there.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 12/07/2024 11:05

I should add, I think they will win it! I will enjoy seeing my English family happy if that helps! Haha

HowIrresponsible · 12/07/2024 11:08

Oh yeah. My parents were Scottish but raised me in England. Rarely took me to Scotland and then expected me to show loyalty to Scotland.

They absolutely do hate anything English and have an air of malice towards us and an air of superiority about themselves.

It isn't banter, they mean it. The branch of the family that remain in Scotland are the same.

Colette · 12/07/2024 11:11

They boo when England score 😳

Quite. They're a pack of childish, boorish, idiots. They need to grow up.

Scottish fans are a broad church - some will support England, some won't care, some won't support England. There's definitely a rivalry, but a lot of it is directed more at the media who make a very big deal about England winning anything and much less so if any of the other UK countries do. I'm English, have lived in Scotland for years, and have Scottish parents and family so see it from both sides. My sister lives in England and the comments she comes out with can only be described as little Englander - it's mortifying listening to her. She also makes snide comments about Scotland, has utter disdain for the country generally and mimics our accents, so I try and ignore her idiotic behaviour.

I have some family like this. I honestly find it pathetic.

I tell them to grow up

There have been threads on here where Scots have admitted they'll cheer for the Lionesses.

I worked with an Australian who was shocked that the English would happily cheer for Australia if England/gb were not involved. They were very much anyone but England and thought we'd be the same.

CatamaranViper · 12/07/2024 11:17

Oh I wish I was Scottish

Marmite27 · 12/07/2024 11:19

Half my company/team is in Scotland, half in England. 100% they want us to loose.

The Scottish person that drew England in the sweepstake for a day off is very conflicted about it Grin

mitogoshi · 12/07/2024 11:20

We watched one of the England group games in Scotland, bar was packed and lots of cheering for England winning from Scot's. Watched another game on a ferry and again no malice. I think it's a cartoon rivalry that's all, and in the opposite direction, everyone I know wanted Scotland to do well, they just didn't.

Scotland doesn't have any sports teams that are capable of winning anything so it is just sour grapes amd childish behaviour.

Lots of love xx

Hoardasurass · 12/07/2024 11:32

If England could be gracious in victory instead of spouting all the crapwe hear non stop and all the press bs perhaps we Scots would cheer England on but no we get the 2 world wars and 1 world cup chants in the run up (yes I know that's a world cup chant but it's a valid example) along with demands of a bank holiday. Add to that whenever a Scottish athlete representing GB wins anything they're called British same for the Welsh and Irish yet when it's an English athlete they're always called English, it's the double standards and the denigrating of the other home nations sporting achievements especially when you consider that England has 10× the population of Scotland.
Basically until the English learn to stop being bragards we won't support them

I often hear this said but honestly I have never heard anyone being called an English athlete

In the Olympics it's always British for everyone.

Im not English but have lived here for 14 years.

Re the post from How Irresponsible:
I just don't get why anyone who chooses to relocate long term to another country for WHATEVER reason continually badmouths that country and unfavourably compares it to the one of origin.
The least you can do out of common courtesy is to have some gratitude and respect for the benefits provided by the country that YOU have decided to live in.
If you think you'd be much better off "back home" then it's common sense for you to return there - on your own if e.g. you can't talk your assimilated family into joining you.
If it's absolutely impossible for you to leave then I have the greatest sympathy for everyone who has to put up with your ungrateful, resentful, moaning, boring a* !
I write as someone whose family cohesion was wrecked by an ex pat in-law with this mindset.

Viva Espana!

It's the arrogance of carrying on like you are a "big" nation, while having won the same number of tournaments as Denmark, Czechoslovakia, and Greece, and fewer than Uruguay.
