Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

I'd cheer for any of the home nations except of course when directly competing against them.

Is that you Lulu?

Oh yeah. My parents were Scottish but raised me in England. Rarely took me to Scotland and then expected me to show loyalty to Scotland.

They absolutely do hate anything English and have an air of malice towards us and an air of superiority about themselves.

It isn't banter, they mean it. The branch of the family that remain in Scotland are the same.

Yes. As an English person I feel anxious visiting Scotland or Wales - paranoid that someone will spit in my coffee or slash my tyres or something else. When I have to ask for directions it’s such a feeling of relief if people are friendly and not hostile. I love the countries but I’d never move there because I’d worry that any decision by authorities would go against me. I have never actually experienced these things in Scotland or Wales, but just knowing the contempt for the English which is socially acceptable, it’s unnerving. It doesn’t feel like friendly banter. Especially since the SNP had such a huge majority for so long. It’s acceptable racism.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/07/2024 11:54

I'm Welsh, and would no more support England than I would France or Spain. Why would I? They are all countries competing against mine.

It beats me why the English don't get it.

Lulu was being polite!

Viva Espana!

It's the arrogance of carrying on like you are a "big" nation, while having won the same number of tournaments as Denmark, Czechoslovakia, and Greece, and fewer than Uruguay.

🤣 spot on.

Itsmeamandaberry · 12/07/2024 11:55

I'm Scottish not English so I don't support them. Unlike the olympics we are two separate teams. It's really not that hard to understand.

KnickerlessParsons · 12/07/2024 11:55

That's because the English see Wales and Scotland as part of England. It's called subjugation.

What has given you this (false) idea?

BringItOnxxx · 12/07/2024 11:56

Lol

Queenofwistfulthinking · 12/07/2024 11:56

As a Scot I dread if England win. The news stories will be non stop for months. It's funny but when I do see England playing how their fans seem to boo everyone and everything including their own players.

That a significant minority of the Scots and the Welsh despise the English? It’s not false.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 12/07/2024 11:50

Same, although I do find the “anyone but England” rather pathetic and childish.

I think you've nailed it there. Support or don't support whoever you like, it's just the nastiness really. Like a bunch of spiteful teenage girls.

This is hilarious. Half the world dislikes England. Do you literally never leave the country?

Really? I find that incredibly sad. We (English family) holiday in Scotland and Wales all the time and have never encountered so much as a hint of hostility.

The rest of the assertions in the comment.

Poggishairtufts · 12/07/2024 11:59

I really don't care who wins, my interest waned when Scotland didn't get out of the group stage but I'd be slightly leaning towards a Spanish win as I find the behaviour of a lot of the fans shameful and the way we won't hear the end of it really tiring. Watching that recent programme about that Euros final at Wembley a few years back really disgusted me. Plus still bleating on about '66 and it coming home, yawn. Well done to the players and others involved though.

Lots of English folk live and holiday where I am in Scotland - they're only disliked if they behave in dislikeable ways, not simply because they're English! I hope you enjoy your holidays.

War references really annoy me too.
England didn't win a war alone, and this isn't about a war anyway. 😬

Why would I automically support a country I am not from, just because it happens to be nearby?

It’s to counteract the effect of being colonised, 100’s of years worth of civil war & oppression and commentators taking smug pleasure from it. I’m not giving fuel to that fire any more. C’mon England, get it home….. then we can have 60 odd more years betting on how many times ‘2024’ will be mentioned! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Go England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Oh rubbish.

I think the thing with some Scotland fans and England is a bit like some England fans (and the awful tabloid press) used to be with the Germans. Germans were embarrassed by it and mostly quite like us. Which is how I feel about Scottish fans behaving that way. Football tribalism is rubbish.

redfacebigdisgrace · 12/07/2024 12:01

All this booing and revelling in England losing makes me cringe as a Scot. Makes us look like sad losers! I’m behind England. Mind you, mainly because they seem a nice bunch and I like Gareth Southgate. If they were arrogant then I might not feel the same but I would never boo.

If you want to see nastiness then I suggest you look at some of the England supporters - they have quite the rep abroad.
