Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

Ditto

I have, which is why I know you haven't.
Similar trend to most of your comments. 🤣

Well… “Elizabeth fluffs her lines in the final scene, as she always does. Elizabeth cried and cried and cried. Selina just smiled”.

This thread has been exhausting (and I really thought my parable on p15 deserved more attention than it got, very sad that no one commented 😆).

TO SUM UP THE THREAD…

“Do Scotland fans really not support England?”

“No, many of us (I would say most) don’t, because we’re fed up being talked at by the BBC etc. as if we’re English, we’re not English, we’re Scottish (and it doesn’t only happen with football). And we’re fed up that every broadcast to a UK-wide audience shoe-horns in a discussion about England, even when it’s not England that’s playing. And we’re also fed up hearing that England won the world cup 58 years ago.

“So, you hate us?”

No, we don’t hate you; didn’t you read my previous comments?

“It’s because you’re jealous that you hate us, isn’t it?”.

We’re not jealous, we don’t hate you; please read my previous comments.

“it’s just petty and spiteful that you hate us”.

You’re missing the point, we don’t hate you.

“I smirk when you call yourself Scottish, you’re so small-minded”.

Eh?

“Your team is shite and you’ll never win anything; it’s because you’re jealous of us that you hate us, isn’t it?”

Erm… we know our team is shite, but no, we’re not jealous - we’ve won one less tournament than you, you’re really not as good as you think you are. Please read my previous comments, and the comments of 3 or 4 other posters, they explain our reasons quite well.

“No thanks, can’t be bothered, just tell us why you hate us”.

I’ve told you, we don’t hate you.

“OK, but it’s the BBC’s fault, so why do you hate our team”.

We don’t hate your team, we just don’t like it when they win because of the subsequent and relentless biased bullshit that’s forced upon us. Consequently, we think it’s quite funny when you lose, so we support any team that’s playing England.

“But it’s not the players fault, so why do you hate them?”

We don’t hate the players, some of us even feel a bit sorry for them, because their own supporters don’t really get behind them very well. And many of us quite like the manager too.

“Some Welsh fans were really mean to me one time, so that PROVES you hate us, doesn't it?”

Erm… I’m not Welsh, I’m Scottish.

“But you’re all the same, and you shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds you”.

Erm, no, that person was winding you up and you fell for it.

England doesn’t subsidise Scotland; if you think it does, you have no understanding of how the UK economy works. And this sentiment is just another example of why Scottish people are fed up with you.

“Hah, so you DO hate us!”

And on and on and on… 🙄

that’s exactly what the pp was implying. The UK government pool the money and share it out."

Not as straight forward as that any more.

Scottish tax rates are different than elsewhere in the uk. And many Scottish taxpayers pay more here than they would elsewhere. And that extra income tax stays in Scotland and helps fund uni places/perscriptions etc

To sum it up another way some people can’t stand anything English and will go out of their way to let that be known.

Scottish tax rates are different than elsewhere in the uk. And many Scottish taxpayers pay more here than they would elsewhere. And that extra income tax stays in Scotland and helps fund uni places/perscriptions etc

Block Grant funding for the Scottish Government is the highest since devolution began at around £41
billion a year for 2022-2025. This means that for every £100 per person the UK Government spends in England on matters devolved to Scotland, the Scottish Government will receive around £126 per person in Scotland.
This higher funding means the Scottish Government receives over £8 billion more funding each year than if it received the levels of UK Government spending per person elsewhere in the UK. This reflects the additional costs of delivering public services in Scotland.
Greater public spending for Scotland is possible because the UK pools and shares resources across the entire country. This system of sharing resources means the whole UK can tackle challenges together

I’m very aware my household tax contribution is higher than it would be in England but the money is pooled together and as there are more higher rate tax payers in England, yet their students still have to pay ridiculous uni fees and pay for their prescriptions all of which is free here. The Scottish government have more per head to spend on its people as stated above…. Public spending for Scotland government website.

Quick, phone an ambulance, I've banged my head against the wall too many times!🤕😆. At least your players know when they've lost a game, but you can't seem to tell that you've lost an argument!

But we're just trading insults now, so you carry on if you wish.

Lost what argument? It’s an opinion and there is no right or wrong answer.

That's on the uk governments head - chooses to spend money elsewhere.

The additional rates of income tax raised in Scotland isn't pooled with uk - it's kept in Scotland.

There are a lot of things I disagree with the Scottish government on what we should spend money on in Scotland, but to suggest" Scotland shouldn't bite the hand that feeds it" as justification as to why Scots should support England in a football tournament, is nuts. Once again, I don't think it says what you think it does about your argument.

Wow! This post is magnitudes better than anything you've posted previously, did you write it yourself?

But again, it's not that straightforward.

Ask yourself this: why did UK politicians fight SO HARD to keep us in the union? Was it because you luuuuuurve us? No, it was because it would have been financially imprudent of them to let us go.

Tell you what, why don't you have a referendum for ENGLISH independence and dissolve the union; then we can get on with being an independent country that doesn't have to listen to the patronising bullshit any longer?

It’s painting the bigger picture. As you’ve all been pointing out it’s far deeper rooted than sports. It’s a sad state of affairs when it gets this nasty. To suggest that the higher rate Scottish tax payer funds everything is nonsense. The UK tax payer does help fund the tuition fees in that respect.

It’s right to point out the financial contributions that England plays and the implications of not pooling the taxes. Scotland benefits from that very much so.

Fair comment, but the refusal of virtually every English person on this thread to acknowledge our measured and VALID explanations is exasperating, and insulting.

And weren't you the PP who smirked at us for being Scottish? That's pretty insulting!

And wasn't it you who couldn't be bothered to even read our explanations, but felt it was ok to chip in and tell us about your smirking? That's pretty insulting.

Its far more complex than that.

I wasn't suggesting that at all - I was pointing out not all income tax is pooled in uk and then distributed. It's not. And that extra tax is used to pay for additional things in Scotland. Not all, no.

But it's not just income tax. Oil revenues etc are also pooled. It's complex. But to say than England is the hand that feeds Scotland is not quite accurate. That's just using a sound bite to try and make a point - which it does, but not the one you think it does. Its a complex subject that can't be reduced to a sound bite.

Scotland chooses different things to spend its money on. Yes. University is an interesting one though - as a result of free places for Scottish students universities restrict the number of places available to Scottish students. As they need the fees generated from overseas students. Double edged sword.
