Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

It is confusing to me when, every year, the English come on this forum all offended that the scottish don't secretly support England. Do you expect germans to support England against Spain too, because of geographical and cultural closeness?

My cousins are big Man U supporters. When Man City were doing well, they always wanted them to lose. It's the same principle. We understand it perfectly well when it's local football teams, why not for country rivalaries?

To add: the English get all wide eyed about the scotland-support-for-england issue every tournament. Fine. But day to day I have never encountered anti-english sentiment in Scotland (albeit in a multicultural city). I have experienced the following when visitng family in England: people openly laughing at how my 2 year old pronounces words in a scottish rather than english accent, to his face. People making constant jokes about scotland being a poor country: do we have running water? do we have electricity? People openly mocking any scottish team that gets into any competition. People ridiculing my DC with stereotypes, asking them mockingly if they play bagpipes and so on. Jokes about violence and getting stabbed (absurd from Londoners...). Obviously I call it out every time, and my DC have enough Englsih blood that I'd imagine they will support England too when grown. But would I be amazed if other scottish children who have been openly taunted by the English grow up to want England to lose at football? Er, not really.

Where did I say I was offended? Just curious about whether it’s just good humoured banter but deep down most want England to do well or if most genuinely mean it, which is hard to understand. It seems it’s a mixed bag. The geographical and cultural closeness is not the level of Scotland and England yet most Germans are supporting England so bit of an odd comment.

@KnickerlessParsons The country is called the United Kingdom, uniting the crowns of Scotland and England, united under James I and IV(a Scottish king that took the English throne - don't see the English being nasty about this fact)

museumum · 12/07/2024 12:31

I genuinely can't bring myself to care. I'm in a very English part of Scotland and have lived in London and have no malice towards English but any kinship I might have felt is overwhelmed by the ridiculous media and pundits who talk every championship like it's England's right to win because they are 'the home of football' and this tournament I was shocked at how the fans treated the team and manager in the group stage when they were playing below par. I just can't get my head round booing your own team's performance in the stadium - I just don't relate at all. (Plus I hated the footage I saw of English fans singing songs about the war in Germany, I know it's a tiny number of idiots but again - cringe!!!)

No because the USA isn’t a neighbouring country and I don’t feel any sense of connection to the USA. If GB weren’t competing I’d support other European countries like Germany. Why would I support the USA?

Because you cited this as a reason for the Scottish to support England: I think it’s natural to feel a sense of kinship when you have so much in common, shared experiences and cultural references. The USA strikes me as fitting this brief, even over european countries.

Maybe it's because I'm not a big football fan, but I don't relaly understand this ranked preference system. I support the country I have settled in and the country I grew up in. I don't really have a long list of who else I want to see win. I don't care who wins between Spain and France, or between Netherlands and Georgia, or against Germany and England. I might prefer England to win purely so my wider family will be happy, but in my heart I don't care at all.

Lots of Germans are supporting Spain, despite being eliminated by them. 😬

Yes. As an English person I feel anxious visiting Scotland or Wales - paranoid that someone will spit in my coffee or slash my tyres or something else. When I have to ask for directions it’s such a feeling of relief if people are friendly and not hostile. I love the countries but I’d never move there because I’d worry that any decision by authorities would go against me. I have never actually experienced these things in Scotland or Wales, but just knowing the contempt for the English which is socially acceptable, it’s unnerving. It doesn’t feel like friendly banter. Especially since the SNP had such a huge majority for so long. It’s acceptable racism.

I think this is in your head. I’ve spent plenty of time in both Scotland and Wales and have never been made to feel unwelcome because of being English. I’ve always found Welsh and Scottish people really warm and friendly. If they are being rude to you maybe it’s because you’ve clearly stereotyped them and have a chip on your shoulder about being English? I think it’s this kind of attitude that drives unnecessary hate.

Are they? Most germans? The majority of the people in Germany actually want England to win? Where did you read this, I'd love to see the data.

@museumum thankfully, only the fucking monsters that are Nigel Farage and Katie Hopkins would defend that vile minority of twats (the bombers chanters).

I've seen lots to suggest they want Spain to win.

Yes but so are the English athletes so either they should all be described as British or they should all have their home nation mentioned. What'd good for the goose is good for the gander

I’m going to listen out for this during the olympics. Not something I’ve thought of.

What’s your source? Of course there’ll be some supporting Spain but I’d be very surprised if the majority are supporting Spain. I used to live in Germany and it’s one of the few European nations who seem to be Anglophiles - who knows why!

I must be a bit naive because I’d be cheering for Scotland if they were in the final (from England). I’d want Andy Murray to win a tennis match for example. I’d want Wales to win a rugby match against New Zealand.

We are all part of the UK.

Right but in tennis Scotland competes as GB so it's not the same.

Apolloneuro · 12/07/2024 12:38

Out of interest, why don’t we have a British football and rugby team, like we do for athletics?

Lots of sources.
I interact with German people, news pages, FB pages, IG pages, and so on most days.

Corknut · 12/07/2024 12:40

I am Scottish, my husband is English and so is my daughter as she was born near Brighton although we have lived back in Scotland since she was 4. I would never support England, sorry not sorry! 😂

I don’t think you read my post properly. Maybe read my other ones which clarify my position.

There’s a thread at the moment in Black Mumsnetters where they speak about areas you shouldn’t move in the UK because of a high percentage of Reform voters.

You could argue that Reform voters weren’t actually motivated by racism to vote Reform and the fear of these regions of high Reform percentage, experienced by the posters in that forum, is ‘all in their heads’, but that’s not going to make them feel safer or make them lose the ‘my luck is going to run out any minute’ feeling visiting those regions. It’s the same impact that anti-English rhetoric has upon me.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/07/2024 12:41

Broadly, the Welsh don't support England either. I don't know why it is so territorial, we're all part of the same island but, sports 'fans'. Hmm
I know that my English colleagues refer to Wales as 'West England' whenever there's a rugby match on; they're more supportive of Wales than the other way around.

I can't understand it and really don't care about sports to that extent.

nietzscheanvibe · 12/07/2024 12:42

ToadOfTheThreads · 12/07/2024 12:20

I can see that would be annoying. But to me, that’s more of an issue of there not being coverage specifically for Scottish TV with dedicated pundits.

But why should Scottish viewers need a dedicated programme to watch England vs Anyone on the BBC without overtly biased commentary? Is the BBC really only for England? The EBC? It's these assumptions that feed into our attitudes.

Collexifon · 12/07/2024 12:42

I guess Scotland got so badly humbled by Germany which will increase the schadenfreude if England don't win.

We have regional TV in a lot of cases. Maybe sports should fall into that category?
