Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

If England could be gracious in victory instead of spouting all the crapwe hear non stop and all the press bs perhaps we Scots would cheer England on but no we get the 2 world wars and 1 world cup chants in the run up (yes I know that's a world cup chant but it's a valid example) along with demands of a bank holiday. Add to that whenever a Scottish athlete representing GB wins anything they're called British same for the Welsh and Irish yet when it's an English athlete they're always called English, it's the double standards and the denigrating of the other home nations sporting achievements especially when you consider that England has 10× the population of Scotland.
Basically until the English learn to stop being bragards we won't support them

I’ve never heard a team GB athlete described as English.

It’s a small minority of fans that sing those kind of chants and Scotland has unsavoury football chants too! They don’t represent the vast majority of supporters.

I'm Welsh, and would no more support England than I would France or Spain. Why would I? They are all countries competing against mine.

It beats me why the English don't get it.

Lulu was being polite!

I think people probably have more issue with the "anyone but England" stuff. Not supporting makes sense, as you say, but only in a more neutral way.

I'll support any of the home nations, but then I'm a bit of a mix - mum is Welsh, dad had a Scottish father, I've always lived in England. I don't care about football, but when I watch things like the commonwealth games I'll cheer on any of the home nations. And if I didn't support one of them, I wouldn't be thinking "ooh I hope they lose!" it would just be like any other final where I didn't have a stake in it.

19lottie82 · 12/07/2024 12:03

I was born, and have lived all of my life in Scotland BUT my parents are both English, so if Scotland aren’t in the running I will support England.

most Scots won’t support England though. I think a big part of it is the fact that we will never hear the end of it, if they do win.

Sarah2891 · 12/07/2024 12:04

The Scots I know hate England and support anyone who plays them. It's so childish. Embarrassing actually.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 12:04

Here come the poor oppressed declaration of Arbroath types 🙈😂

colonised my arse

I think this advert sums it up well 😆

There are very few Scottish football fans who will be hoping England win tonight. The vast majority will be hoping they get absolutely humped.

This. 😂😂

If you want to see nastiness then I suggest you look at some of the England supporters - they have quite the rep abroad.

Mostly thoroughly unfair these days.

And you don't have to look far into most European countries to find ultra racist, violent, football supporting thugs as a section of the fanbase. There is a much bigger problem in some countries than here.

I don't 'hate England' and neither do most of my friends. We are quite sick of the English media and constant references to 'it's coming home', as well as the awful songs about WW2 though.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 12:07

There were complaints about English adverts being shown during Scotland games.

It’s embarrassing

Really? I find that incredibly sad. We (English family) holiday in Scotland and Wales all the time and have never encountered so much as a hint of hostility.

I’ve known English people who have settled in Wales, and they are never accepted after decades and treated with mistrust.

I love going to Wales and Scotland too, but it’s the anti-English hatred I’ve witnessed from both countries - even on Mumsnet - even politicians, that makes me feel like my ‘run of good luck’ meeting the friendly people is going to end any minute.

Its just the way it is.

My daughter recently went on a hike with some classmates and they got lost and needed to ask for directions, a man was so kind he even walked out of his garden into the mud with his bare feet to direct them. Her classmates were really surprised he was friendly, expecting him to be racist because they wear hijabs. I feel exactly the same in Scotland and Wales - relieved and surprised if I’m not being treated with contempt and prejudice.

You are not in Scotland listening to English commentators talking about Scottish ‘Great British Sportsmen’ then!! And then English, ‘Another English success story’! Scots and Welsh will get this.

Crushedcandy · 12/07/2024 12:04

Don't tell me if Scotland won anything they wouldn't go on about it endlessly. Some fans wang on just about when they beat England once.

I mean you can't even just arrive in a Scottish city or airport without being assaulted by a saltire flag convention and a piper, in case you forgot for a minute what country you were in.

Seaside1234 · 12/07/2024 12:08

I'm English but been here since I was 19, married to a Scot, children born here. All actively like to see England lose. Although my son is now claiming to his mates that he's always been 100% English. Fairweather fan 😂

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 12/07/2024 12:08

HowIrresponsible · 12/07/2024 11:13

Quite. They're a pack of childish, boorish, idiots. They need to grow up.

What, the Scottish are? And then you want them to support your football team?

If they are Scottish or Welsh they are also British.

BigBoysDontCry · 12/07/2024 12:09

It's definitely a mix. I don't particularly follow football but I'd be happy for my English friends and colleagues if England won.

People that are fans of football want to see good games and for good results for the teams that deserve it.

Unfortunately there is a core of Scottish people that walk around with a permanent chip on their shoulder and look for any way to be offended. In some ways it's the way they were raised and don't have the brains to think differently, they are often involved in sectarian football, vote SNP and hate "the English" whilst putting on an act that they are totally different from English people e.g. Less racist, more socialist etc. It makes me ashamed to be honest. You can be proud of your country (by accident of birth) without being an arsehole.

There is also a large group for whom it's all banter and non malicious rivalry.

Most of my work team are English and they never failed to be the first to wish Scotland luck in their games.

celestebellman · 12/07/2024 12:09

I'm Scottish living in England. I have no interest in football so don't really care, but would like if England won as my dc will be happy.

There has always been a bit of a thing about the Scots supporting anyone against the English. I think it's mostly friendly rivalry, but some people take it seriously.

My parents will be watching in Scotland and will support England (as they do whenever Scotland goes out.... so most of time 😂)

I didn't say all Scots hate England, just the ones I know.
But I do find the "It's coming home" (esp the song) annoying too and I'm English.

EasterlyDirections · 12/07/2024 12:11

Werweisswohin · 12/07/2024 11:48

I'm not sure what part of Scotland you're going to but the part I live in will be showing it in a Fanzone.

We will be a fairly short train ride from Glasgow. I had assumed the fanzones would only be for Scotland games, hadn't considered that they might be doing one for the final.

MrHarleyQuin · 12/07/2024 12:13

I worked in Edinburgh 20 years ago and really enjoyed it. But was unpleasantly surprised at some anti-English jokes and comments from supposedly professional colleagues, (when I became one of them and they forgot where I was from) the sort of thing like anti-Irish jokes I'd heard in England 20 years before that. I hope things have improved since.

tigger1001 · 12/07/2024 12:14

I have Spain in the office sweepie - so am
Hoping for a Spanish win.

As a neutral watching the game, Spain are more exciting to watch. I'm not a fan of the style of play the English team use. And given the level of criticism that's been given to them, neither are a lot of English fans.

It's the media, not the team. The mostly English media love to build a team/sportsperson up to tear them down. The level of abuse the players received for missing penalties in the last euros was quite frankly disgusting. And that was from their own fans and media.

I'm from Manchester and support Man Utd but moved down south 25 years ago . Our nearest team is Crystal Palace. My daughters think they might like Man City 😅

nietzscheanvibe · 12/07/2024 12:15

When I'm sitting in Scotland on my Scottish sofa in my Scottish living room watching my Scottish TV, and BBC commentators are giving it "we" and "us" straight down the camera, it kinda pisses me off - it's your self-entitlement that grates. Can't speak for everyone, but I feel no malice towards English people, just don't want your team to win or we'll never hear the fckn end of it! 🤷‍♂️

DowntonCrabby · 12/07/2024 12:16

I’m Scottish, I don’t want them to win but I don’t know why.

I got right behind the lionesses in 2022 and 2023 and was genuinely delighted to see them doing amazingly. I kept banging on to my GK son about Mary Earps and was delighted to see her win SPOTY and follow loads of them on Instagram.
