Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

Why would I automically support a country I am not from, just because it happens to be nearby?

Why would you support Spain? There's higher likelihood of England cheering for Scotland than Spain doing that.

England fans have been known to boo national anthems of other countries so.....

Booers on both side are pathetic. It doesn't mean players are the same.

This is hilarious. Half the world dislikes England. Do you literally never leave the country?

Majority of us Indians don't hate English and many support Premier lague teams, despite what is said in media about historical grudge.

Scotland has a special kind of hate for English, not surprised poster does not trust them.

namechangemama101 · 15/07/2024 01:18

Not that i don't 'support' England as a Scot but the whole 'it's coming home' bs really grinds my gears.

bonzaitree · 15/07/2024 01:30

Yes in lots of sporting events, Scotland typically won’t get as far as England and then the rest of the competition will be about them wanting the English to lose 😂

I never understood it when I lived there- very confusing and a bit sad really.

English hating is ingrained in the culture. Tbh I think the Scot’s think about England more than the English do!

Pinkstanley · 15/07/2024 06:37

I wonder if anyone has actually gotten the jist of the thread. Scotland don’t hate England or the English. It’s the bullshit, not stop twittering on by the media that pisses us off.

You are quick with conebacks without using much thoughts. Such a childish way to engage.

You have been giving justifications to want English team to lose because fans and media have been annoying, point is why should players defeat be enjoyed, they are not responsible for media and other people. Don't understand this hate but enjoy.

Have you actually read the thread or sny of my comments? Sounds like you haven't.

As a Scot, I'd find it easier supporting England (because the current team seem a nice bunch of lads and Southgate is just so normal and likeable) if English fans weren't so bloody embarrassing. There is always trouble when the drinking starts. They will predictably start belting out Ten German Bombers in the beer gardens. And you know they'll be absolutely insufferable for years if the men's team get any sort of trophy. It's kind of fun watching England supporters do the mental gymnastics required to still not fully acknowledge that the Lionesses are more successful - it has "come home", just not to the men's locker room.

The tax payers do and you reep the rewards, exactly why the poster I quoted was goading. Shes got a point!

EasterlyDirections · 15/07/2024 11:31

Just coming back as the English person visiting Scotland and wanting to watch it but not in a hotel room, the hotel had it on in the bar, there was a pretty even split between those supporting England and Spain and a good atmosphere. The best team won.

Oh Please. It’s not misinformed because you don’t agree with it.
that’s exactly what the pp was implying. The UK government pool the money and share it out.

There were an estimated 50,000 England fans in Berlin yesterday. I suspect that over 49,000 of them hate that song and are embarrassed by those that sing it. You might as well condemn all Scots because of sectarian singing at Old Firm matches. No country is without idiots!
