Do Scottish fans really not support England?

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

It varies hugely from location to location, and group to group.

AzureAnt · 12/07/2024 11:41

Seriously folks, the England fans couldn't give shit if Scotland don't want us to win
It's called sour grapes and Scotland are full of sour grapes 🤣🤣

Huggybear16 · 12/07/2024 11:42

I'm Scottish. I'd love England win on Sunday.

EasterlyDirections · 12/07/2024 11:45

Pondering this question myself - I'm half English half Scottish but lived in England all my life. I support England but support Scotland or the other home nations against anyone else. We will be in Scotland on Sunday night and have been wondering if it will be on in any pubs and whether we would be welcome or not.

Werweisswohin · 12/07/2024 11:46

Why would I automically support a country I am not from, just because it happens to be nearby?

They obviously care enough to start threads about it and post on it with little emojis. .

DoIWantTo · 12/07/2024 11:47

I won’t be supporting them, same as I wouldn’t be supporting Spain. Not my circus, not my monkeys.

I'm not sure what part of Scotland you're going to but the part I live in will be showing it in a Fanzone.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 11:48

I’m Scottish but support England (unless against Scotland, obviously!)

But yes, lots of people really hate England and want them to lose. It can be quite vitriolic.

The Paddy Power ads have nailed it 😂

Comments like this are so predictable. Nobody has to support a country they don't live in, in fact nobody has to support any country!

LibertyDuck · 12/07/2024 11:49

I'm Scottish, don't really give a shit about football but still want Spain to win. As does pretty much everyone I know.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 11:49

It will be on in all the pubs and you’ll be fine though

housemaus · 12/07/2024 11:49

Why would they? It's a different country. I wouldn't cheer for France if we were out because I'm not French, I have no idea why another country would cheer for us.

CitizenZ · 12/07/2024 11:49

As an English person, I have always got behind any of the UK teams when they've made it to the tournaments. I've heard and read absolutely venomous things from the Scots against the English, but it doesn't affect me personally, so I take it with a pinch of salt.

Jubileetime · 12/07/2024 11:50

Scottish and live in Scotland and have supported England throughout, slightly more conflicted for Sunday as I love Spain ( live their part time with a plan to retire there) but on balance still want England to win. On the whole for most it is a cartoon rivalry but for some there is a real hatred which I think is pathetic

They boo when England score 😳

England fans have been known to boo national anthems of other countries so.....

Same, although I do find the “anyone but England” rather pathetic and childish.

Scotland doesn't have any sports teams that are capable of winning anything so it is just sour grapes amd childish behaviour.

Lots of love xx

And yet for the last three years Scotland have beaten England in the six nations.

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 11:52

Spain are the better team anyway so I'll be cheering for them. I don't expect England fans to cheer for Scotland, so I'll cheer the team I want to win.

I'd cheer for any of the home nations except of course when directly competing against them.

Iwasafool · 12/07/2024 11:52

Lulu was on a breakfast show this morning, she said she'd cheer for England unless they were playing Scotland as then she'd cheer for Scotland. Seemed reasonable.

LittleLittleRex · 12/07/2024 11:52

I start out wanting England to do well but the commentary and fans change my mind pretty early on in every competition.

I always cheer on the Lionesses.

I would still support them if they were the underdog, I think, but naturally root for the small country taking them on otherwise.

VioletLemon · 12/07/2024 11:52

Probably, yes.
Im supporting England because I’m sick of the negativity of ‘anyone but England’. The reason is the English sports commentators have historically been really arrogant and scathing about Scots, Irish, French etc. The players and teams (except London teams) are hugely popular here. I’m a Man United fan of 35 years and this year I’m enjoying the positivity of Englands success. There’s an element in Englands support and commentating groups that is vitriolic, nasty and very toxic. I have worked up close with players families at times and I’ve seen the abuse hurled at them when their team loses. It’s this element that Scots HATE as it’s so derogatory and colonial in root.

TerroristToddler · 12/07/2024 11:52

I'm English. Married to Scottish DH (who, incidentally, has lived in south England since he was around 1yo) and my experience is that, yes, he will typically support any country playing except England.

On Wednesday he wore the football shit of the other team, for example.

Meanwhile, I was thrilled for Scotland for getting to the Euros and supported them in their matches. Would have loved to see them go further Confused so I really don't get it!
