Once, when I was about 20 my toenail started to hurt, I looked at it and it didn't seem different, but I noticed that the toenail was a teensy bit in the skin. I got the nail scissors out and cut the nail. It was like peeling open a can of ready-roll pastries-there was a small pause and then a pop as a small river of brown pus rolled out over my toe. I spent a happy half hour or so cleaning under the nail, and then over the course of about 6 months it grew out. I was almost sad when I said goodbye to the last thickened nasty toenail.
It has never happened again despite my best efforts to the contrary

My face when I got a bad case of Opthalmic Shingles. It looked really sore but because Shingles kills your nerves, I couldn't feel a thing. That was 4 years ago and that part of my head is still numb.

NoEffingWaytoSurvive · 21/05/2021 14:18

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens O have never heard of opthalmolgic shingles but yay gods that looks painful to even think about Shock

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 21/05/2021 20:22

@NoEffingWaytoSurvive it's basically Shingles on the eye Shock the area around my Cornea were badly scarred, I've been told that if the lesions had made it to my actual Cornea, as severe as they were, I would likely be blind in my right eye. I was very lucky to avoid this!

So with it being a lock down I've been doing my own bikini waxing and have been plagued by ingrowing hairs which usually just appear as small pimple like spots, I squeeze them and out pops the hair which I tweeze out.
When it was really sunny a few weeks ago, I was in the garden in my bikini trying to get a bit of a tan. As I looked down I noticed what looked like several blackheads on my bikini line. I squeezed one and out popped a 5mm long crust, black on top then a greeney colour with long hair. Grabbed my tweezers and started pulling but could actually feel it travelling under my skin about an inch or 2 further up - massive 3 inch hair finally appeared! It seems like the follicle was higher up and it just grew sideways under the skin! Tackled the rest, all quite boring after that, bit of a crust when popped and hair emerged ready to be plucked, although one was actually 3 or 4 hairs twisted together and they were all over an inch long. I laid them all on a sheet of paper to admire the plug and the length of the hairs!! Weirdly they all just slipped out with the tweezers, didn't feel like plucking at all!
Every day I look hoping for another crop of these "blackheads" on my bikini line but no luck so far!
However for the last couple of weeks I've got, what I think is a bitch of an ingrowing hair on my groin. The skin is a purple colour, the size of a 1p. It feels bruised and gets quite raised but doesn't develop the required head to squeeze! I slap mag sulph on for a few nights, it get bigger, more painful but then just flattens again.
However today I was waxing bikini line with hot wax and the heat obviously aggravated it slightly cos it stung like ! Gave it a gentle squeeze and a blob of green gunk came out, kept squeezing and green gunk turned to yellow then clear then a watery blood. Couldn't get anymore out but I know there's more to come so more mag sulph on it today and I'm hoping that it'll be ready to erupt tomorrow!!! 😁

@Allbymyself1 I had to give up on trying to have a hair free pubic area. I tried all sorts but shaving produced some amazing ingrown hair pimples, that I could rarely get the hair out of. The skin would be inflamed and have a shiny appearance. I could squeeze out some pus and blood, and they would last weeks.
I am so jealous of your three inch hair!

Allbymyself1 · 21/05/2021 21:44

NoEffingWaytoSurvive
Yep mine has a shiny appearance and has lasted for weeks!
I must admit I feel like giving up on the waxing! Unfortunately my pubic hair is trying to take over, it's growing up, down and sideways across my body. I just want to wear underwear or a bikini without it looking like I'm trying to hide Gnasher down there! But end up with so many bumps from the ingrowing hairs that I won't wear a bikini/swimsuit in public - just in the privacy of my garden!!
I must admit as I felt this hair sliding under my skin and then saw the length of it my first thought was Sporner Corner would love this!!! 😆

I am prone to boils and I’ve had some impressive ones over the years. One memorable one was on my thigh. The area around it was quite red (size of my hand), so I had to have antibiotics. The boil was huge! I was warned that I would probably need two weeks worth of meds, but they could only prescribe a week at a time. After the week had passed, the boil was much smaller, but had not gone completely and, sure enough, it only got worse. The redness increased once again.
I was planning to book a GP appt that day, and was assessing how deep the boil was by gently compressing it. Suddenly, a thick stream of pus emerged from the boil, and just kept coming! It was glorious Grin. I had a few days of pus-clearing fun, then it healed! The relief from the pain was immense!

I have a few from over the years.....

About 22 years ago I got (dr assumed) bitten by a horse fly on the side of my calf. Sharp pain when getting dressed one morning, looked sore so slapped a large plaster over it and went off to work in a hospital. Developed a blister at the site that, after a week, I showed to GP and he shone a torch against it, declared it not infected as fluid looked clear and said to leave alone and it would eventually be reabsorbed by my body. Carried on covering with simple dressing. That night the dressing obviously shifted and burst the blister; by morning the area was red and sore so put a better dressing on but it got progressively more painful and, when I checked it a couple of hours later, there was a definite red border bigger than the 5cm x 5cm dressing. Got one of the Drs at work to look at it - he took the dressing off and there was a massive infected crater where the blister had been and growing area of redness round it (you could almost see it growing). He sent me to A&E who got tissue viability nurse down to deal with it and I had to be referred for diabetic tests as they decided it was very unusual to end up as it had (tests all negative). Took about 3 months to heal properly and, at one point, they were discussing surgery to cut the area out and doing skin grafts but I avoided it in the end. Still have an inch long scar on my leg from it.

Had a bartholin cyst that developed over the course of a night shift. Due to medication for an unrelated condition I couldn’t go to walk in centres so went off to A&E 3pm on a Sunday afternoon with a lump the size of a grape; expected to be given antibiotics and sent home - A&E Dr asked gynae for their opinion as, by the time they looked at it, it was the size of a small apricot and still growing. Got admitted overnight for surgery the following day. Next morning Dr reviewed me (without actually examining the problem she just read my notes) declared all I needed was to continue the antibiotics and sent me home. Discharge letter claimed I’d been on 4 days of antibiotics and had a ‘small area of redness remaining from infected hair follicle’ (no idea where she got her information from!). Anyway, couldn’t sit down, couldn’t comfortably stand up and even lying down was excruciatingly painful. Not knowing what to do I rang the ward at 10pm and spoke to a nurse who was horrified they’d discharged me without dealing with the problem; she advised I take whatever pain killer I could and go back to A&E the following morning. I was admitted again by which time the cyst was the size of an egg and bulging; I couldn’t wear knickers or trousers so had travelled in by bus in a skirt and commando 😱 that hour on the bus was agony!! Surgery scheduled for next day and, just before going to theatre, used the toilet where it started oozing foul smelling green pus. They drained it and, instead of packing it, stitched the edges open and dressed it so it would heal upwards.

Last one. For a few months I had what felt like a blocked pore on the edge of my labia. Was about the size of a grain of rice but not painful so I left it. One day while wiping in the toilet it felt different and kind of sharp; gave it a squeeze and out popped a flat lump of I don’t know what with the texture of stone, about the size of an apple pip. Left a hole that closed up over the next couple of days and never come back.

How have I missed this thread for so long?

My best ever (and I've had a few, including some corkers on DH's back) was my BCG. We were firmly told to leave them alone, which I nobly did, for bloody weeks. I did notice that where there should be a dip in my upper arm I was getting a bulge. Then one day, getting changed, I knocked the scab. Oh my goodness. I had to hold my shirt sleeve out of the way while I got some loo paper to mop up the gallons of yellow gunk. Decades gone, but not forgotten.

SinkGirl · 25/05/2021 16:28

Blimey. I’ve had some impressive spots but these put me to shame. Have had a few interesting ones though.

Had two broken molars and two wisdom teeth removed a couple of months ago and for weeks I had big splinters of bone working their way out of the wounds - no wonder it hurt so much!

Two from pretty nasty injuries:

  1. When I was 18 I was home from uni for Christmas. Got up in the night to use the loo, slipped and landed on the sink which broke in half and I slid down it - cut my arm to the bone about 3/4 of the way round. Came round in a pool of blood, blood sprayed up the walls etc, no idea how I didn’t die. The hospital told me initially my arm would likely be amputated, then that I would be transferred to a specialist hospital, then it ended up being repaired in A&E while I was conscious (still don’t know why).

Six months later, I noticed a tiny bump on my scar. Scratched at it and nothing happened. A week later there was a thread hanging out of my arm - clearly my body rejecting the internal stitches that hadn’t dissolved. It happened 13 times - constantly had bits of thread poking out of my arm for the next few months.

  1. my eyelid was cut open with a fencing sword (don’t ask). I went to the eye hospital and made me wait a few hours, had no idea if I would be able to see. They stitched it back up (one of the most horrible experiences of my life as it was so swollen the skin was so tight). I honestly looked like a plum had been cut in half and stuck over my eye.

Then about two months later the scar swelled up and starting weeping - I looked in a magnifying mirror and saw something glinting in the light... there was a tiny chip of metal lodged inside my eyelid, and a lot of goo. Healed well after that and you can barely see the scar.

Basically it’s amazing that I don’t have only one arm and one eye!

SinkGirl · 25/05/2021 16:29

Oh and when my twins got chicken pox, DT2 got the worst infection in his leg I’ve ever seen - the pox were literally black and the redness spread from his groin to his knee. Hospital treated him but the ooze that came from it was like something from a horror film. Poor kid. Couldn’t walk for about five days.

This has been my favourite thread ever and I thank you all. Pop back to catch up every so often and have yet to be disappointed.

Please don't let it die 🙏

I was on holiday in Spain and became aware my ear was aching a lot. I rubbed at it and realised there was a huge lumpy spot. I was trying to ignore it and deal with it back at the hotel but couldnt resist touching it again and it just popped with a noticeable sound and burst everywhere

Yep. I am insanely accident prone. But those were my most ridiculous.

MotherCanDoIt · 26/06/2021 16:26

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the last 15 pages in one go, can’t let it die!

When I was around 14 my Dad dropped a metal cable casing on the side of his face. Butterfly stitched the inch gash back together all fine. About a week later it was bulging so he sat down for me so I could inspect. As soon as I touched the side the scabbed crust broke and a green, thick gunge erupted forth. Spent about half an hour massaging up around the cut to try and get everything out, remember it fondly! No idea why my mum didn’t do it though….

EKGEMS · 30/06/2021 14:10

After sinus surgery back in the day I sneezed while packing was still in both sides of my nose and I expelled this maroon, jelly like blob the size of a drink coaster-was a giant clot

IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 30/06/2021 20:18

@HuxleyPigPanic

A poo that looked like an alien with arms and legs after 5 days of constipation after a c-section. I was so shocked at the shape of it I nearly fainted. I have no idea how it exited my body that shape.
Mine was like a baseball! Solid like a baseball and the same size/shape! Traumatic
IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 30/06/2021 20:28

Not on me but I used to work in animal rescue and we had a little 'pack' of guinea pigs who all lived together. Several used to get sebaceous cysts which we had to keep clean (under the advice of the vet)
I was given the task of keeping on top of the cysts and cleaning them. Bliss.

IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 30/06/2021 20:35

Dd1 was in special care and I was sat waiting for the doctor to come round. I felt something coming out of me and it felt almost like labour. Didn't want to miss the doctor so sat there in a fair amount of pain passing something.
I had dh walk me back to the ward and the assisted loo where I passed a huge clot. I saved it in a sick bowl as I was so scared by the size of it. Showed the mw and she made me feel stupid to be scared.

IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 30/06/2021 20:36

@rosegoldivy

Love this thread. .a few months ago I woke up during the night and my nose felt funny and went, automatically stuck my finger up my nostril and could feel something half way up my nose, managed to fish hook it, thinking it was a bogey, but then when I went to pull it out it gave a bit of resistance. Slowly began easing it out and it honestly felt like i could feel it sliding down from my brain. I had it half way out my nostril and then pinched it with a finger and thumb to get the rest out. Turned the light on and it was a long jelly like texture bright red worm type thing an inch or two in length ?! I have never been so disgusted but also impressed. Even woke DH up so he could marvel at it. Also have pictures I will look out
I've had one of those during a nose bleed
IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 30/06/2021 20:56

@SanFrancisco49er

I once enthusiastically ate a hotdog and somehow inhaled a mouthful up into my nose, from my throat. It stayed stuck there for a few days and was really uncomfortable, although my mum didnt believe me. It shot out a few days later when blowing my nose and the relief and free airway again was enormous! And I had a wonderful piece of evidence to show my mum who was horrified and apologised profusely for not believing me, or helping me!
I started coughing whilst eating a raw carrot. Tiny little fucker got wedged into my sinuse. Took days and lots of poking with a tissue and blowing before it finally flew out.
IsItSafeToBeOptimisticYet · 01/07/2021 17:22

Another one to try and keep this thread going. My dad was involved in a hit and run in the 80's. Broken nose but very lucky otherwise. For months afterwards he was pulling bits of rubber from his lips from the windscreen wipers.
To this day he will get a small spot on his nose and after waiting or scratching at it he can produce shards of bone. 😱

DanteThunderstone · 01/07/2021 21:29

About ten years ago I became aware that the biggest zit of my life had been brewing undetected in my pubic hair. I managed to squeeze it between two fingers of my right hand while angling a make up compact mirror with my left, so that I could see what I was doing. It bulged between my fingers, turning a deeper and deeper pink like an angry old man, then too quick to see it happening BURST all over the mirror in a dynamic splodge of runny custard.

More recently I got some water trapped in my right ear in the shower. It stayed with that annoying blocked up feeling for a few days then gradually cleared. A few days after that, a thick disc of ancient dark wax popped out of my ear canal. The water sitting against it must have loosened it. It was about the circumference of a 5p coin but much thinker - geological layers of decades of compacted old wax.

I've considered deliberately firing the shower head into my left ear canal in the hope of getting the same result.
