It may only be October but Christmas is fast approaching and many of us are already planning for the holiday by thinking about presents, food, and decorations. As well as decking out our home with baubles, Christmas time is also a nudge to get all those niggly DIY home improvements done. Bunnings would like to find out which DIY tasks you’d like to complete before Christmas and any advice you would like for doing them. They will then pick the most popular DIY challenge and create a video of tips and tricks for doing it. We will be sharing this video on another thread in a few weeks time, so keep an eye out!

Whether you want to spruce up your bathroom, put up some new shelving, or give your lounge a new lick of paint, please share your Christmas DIY challenges below and you will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Event - RECRUITMENT NOW CLOSED

Bunnings, the new store for home improvement is having a Grand Opening celebration on the 4th November and would like to recruit 10 Mumsnetters (and their partners/ families if they want to bring them along) to come along to the grand opening and check out the store. All participants will be given a £20 Bunnings voucher on the day and will be required to leave their feedback on a thread on Mumsnet. If you can share an image or post of the event on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram as well that would be great! You can enjoy face painting, balloon modelling and even join Peppa Pig and George for a story time session. Activities are between 11am - 3pm, see bunnings.co.uk/our-stores/harlow for details.

If you’re interested in taking part, sign up here. All event attendees that leave their feedback on the feedback thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I need to redecorate our bathroom before we have our xmas visitors. its going to be quite a job

PinglePongle · 27/10/2017 16:37

We are desperate for a full living room make over!

PorridgeAgainAbney · 27/10/2017 20:12

I think if we could clean all the carpets then any guests won't even notice the gaping hole in the lounge wall (opened up the chimney then ran out of money to put anything back in); the numerous paint samples on the walls and the missing bath panel Wink.

The list is way too long to achieve anything meaningful in the next 8 weeks!

angiehoggett · 27/10/2017 22:47

I would like my kitchen revamping but not sure it will be in time for xmas!

Sazzle1984 · 28/10/2017 04:01

There are loads of little jobs we need to do around the house before Christmas. But the main one is the wallpapering on the landing, I'm wondering if I should risk doing it myself or I'll bodge it up!!

JoansSideEye · 28/10/2017 09:05

We need to repaint the hallway and skirting boards.

glmcall123 · 28/10/2017 12:12

I've got 2 bedrooms and a bathroom to decorate. I've put them in hold while the weather was good but I'm regretting it now. I could be painting in Christmas Eve!

mishknight · 28/10/2017 16:00

need a fresh lick of paint in every room and need to re-floor living room

Flapdoodles · 28/10/2017 17:47

The kitchen and bathrooms could do with a lick of paint, it would be nice to have them done by Christmas but not sure I have the time (or inclination). My kitchen windowsill needs glossing - is it okay to paint it this late in the year or will the gloss not dry as it is so cold?

UpOnDown · 28/10/2017 18:51

I need to paint my hall.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 28/10/2017 19:00

House not too bad, mostly needs a good Christmas clean and some odd paint jobs, will replace some soft furnishings to create the appearance of freshness.

dannydog1 · 28/10/2017 19:55

Definitely paint the kitchen. We have painted every room this year except the kitchen, but now they are showing up the kitchen!

MrsBee77 · 28/10/2017 20:26

We've got a huge list, including

  • Repair/replace rotting wood around window frames
  • Fix broken towel rail in bathroom
  • Put up extra shelves in DS1 & 2's built-in wardrobes
  • Replace faulty light fitting in porch
GruffaloPants · 28/10/2017 22:09

We need to reshelve our hall cupboard! We are so short on space. I can't bear trying to reshuffle it again when it comes time to put the decorations away.

matphil · 28/10/2017 22:14

I want new flooring right through my passage, living room, dining room and kitchen.
I'm dreading doing it as the floors need to be screed first so need to move all the furniture out of the rooms.

Gibble1 · 29/10/2017 00:48

So as we are havin the kitchen ripped out in a fortnight, I decided to get to grips with the upstairs to create space for all the stuff that has to be moved. 2 days spent cleaning ds’s Bedroom and have stripped his wallpaper! DH now has to paint it tomorrow while I take DS to Ikea for a new mattress as his has sprung a spring! Think we’ll be having a looong day and late night tomorrow 😱

pockledigg · 29/10/2017 04:51

The dripping tap in the kitchen is driving me mad! I can't cook Xmas dinner in there on the big day with that going on-it will ruin my concentration! (Well, that's my excuse anyway..........)

tabbaz123 · 29/10/2017 07:41

This year my living room is the challenge! I have a damp patch by the chimney that keeps reappearing and I keep painting - I really need to treat it/stop it and re-paint once and for all before Christmas as I have the entire family coming for the first time ever! Exciting but BUSY TIMES ahead

delboy98 · 29/10/2017 09:05

We need to re-plaster the bathroom ceiling. Years of two-hour hot baths means it's going to come down any minute!

tiddledpink · 29/10/2017 13:33

In terms of DIY that needs doing we've still got a fair bit of little jobs left.

Finally got carpet downstairs after a year so that's one job less to do ✔

All that's left now is

  1. wallpaper/paint the kitchen and get the units repaired.

  2. paint and decorate DS's room to finally make it his own.

  3. touch up the bathrooms with a lick of paint.

  4. paint/wallpaper the lounge.

Then we can finally start calling this house a home.

vicks276 · 29/10/2017 13:51

I'd love to decorate our lounge for Christmas - its been about 10 years since we last did it!

libra101 · 29/10/2017 14:07

We need new exterior and interior doors. We will ask a tradesman to do the exterior doors, but want to tackle the interior doors ourselves.

Any tips or hints how to do this, and is it difficult to fit the door catches and glass (for a couple of doors)?

Thank you

laurapotz · 29/10/2017 14:28

DIY? I'd just like to get my home clean and tidy before Christmas, but I'd be doing it myself so does that count?

BGcat14 · 29/10/2017 14:38

We need to redo our downstairs bathroom ready for my grandparents to come stay

Sarahh2014 · 29/10/2017 15:42
