Changing energy suppliers every 12 months can be a pain, from looking around to find the best deal to the general hassle of switching. However, it has traditionally been the best way to keep prices low, especially when rates sharply rise after the first year deal. And then there’s the concern of wanting to use greener energy, but without the extortionate prices.

That’s why Octopus Energy have teamed up with Mumsnet to launch the Green Octopus tariff, which is the cheapest green tariff for the average household, anywhere in the UK. It offers 100% renewable electricity and carbon offsetting for gas, without the usual difficulties of switching and the shady price hikes.

Switching is so easy, I do it at least once a year, it takes minutes.
I had a quick look at octopus and it seems similar to other switching sites. I didn't like the quick quote though as it never asked what tariff I was currently on so it said I could save £180, then under in much smaller writing that it was based on if I was on a standard tariff with one of the big 6. In reality, it was more expensive than my current supplier and it would cost me to switch. Could be misleading.
I never signed up for above reason. It really doesn't seem any different to any of the other numerous switching sites. Sorry.

The quote was easy to do and I was told I could save £249 per year and it would cost me monthly payments of £70.38
I did not take up the offer as I have just switched to OVO and it costs me £10 less a month with OVO.

Quote defaulted to their most expensive tariff, I didn't realise that until I checked on another site and octopus were cheapest but £200 cheaper than the octopus site had quoted!

Then i realised the the octopus site was showing the green tarred not the variable.

It's still cheaper for me, but I'll check other suppliers first.

Hmm, I just did the quote and it gave me a direct debit figure of £49 a month for gas & elec. I currently only pay £25 a month, and my account is in credit. So I'll be sticking with my current provider I think!

My quote seemed really expensive. I always think with these things "But what's the catch?" Everything that says its easy and saves you money seems to have hidden clauses which can be disappointing.

My quote was £67 per month, but currently only pay £59 . I have already switched this year though, as I do regularly, so I'm probably not the sort of person they're looking for.

I'm sure someone on a variable rate who's either never switched, or not recently would save money - although I'd recommend they used a comparison site rather than only checking a single supplier!

We usually shop around anyway and switch to the best deal at least once a year; we don't find it to be too much of a hassle.

There are other comparison sites out there that we use do I'm not sure we'd ever use Octopus.

My quote was a lot cheaper than we are paying at the moment (British Gas) but we switched 2 weeks ago to the Co-op so I want to see how that goes before switching again.

Quote was more than I currently pay too. I am a savvy energy swapped though. The site itself was fine though but no swapping here. I also agree with pp that not being able tonote current actual tariff for a quick quote was annoying.

£277 saving a year. Didn't sign up as I would want to do some digging first. They didn't check supplier nor actual usage so comparison difficult to verify.

East site. I think it's probably worth paying the extra to use energy from renewable resources but unfortunately we are skint so have to make do with co op.

I'm on the key/card meter and couldn't see an option for that.
I also already use renewable energy as I'm with ecotricity. I was not quoted cheaper but roughly the same.

Mine came out cheaper and I like the fact its green energy but I do like to look at things like this in much more detail so would need the time to do this which unfortunately I haven't got at the moment. Very memorable name though - Octopus! Will keep it in mind :)

We're in the middle of moving house, the new house is smaller than our current house and better insulated.

We used our kWh for the previous year in this house as a benchmark for what we will use in the new house (we won't use as much I don't think). Octopus quoted us £76.09 for this usage, we currently pay £110 a month and are nearly always in debit. That's with British Gas. I wish I'd looked around earlier to change suppliers but I always thought it seemed like a right ball ache so never bothered

Cute name and logo, but I don't trust any energy supplier. I'm sure it's technically the cheapest for this very narrowly defined category

My quote was marginally cheaper and I will definitely consider them when switching in August. It was quick and easy.

My quote is similar to what I pay at present. I like the green aspect of it, and could accept a small increase, or loss of decrease in tariff, for this. I will consider it.

Not impressed. Didn't ask tariff info or kWh usage. Actually £15 per month dearer.

Not good for me - I have a new (4yo) home that won awards for its energy efficiency, but this wasn't taken into account.

Octupus projection was that they would save me £663 per annum, when in fact their quote was more expensive than my current tarriff

My quote seemed quite pricey. I don't know exactly what we are paying at the moment but I'm going to double check. I'm certain the quote was higher though.

£374 is apparently what our household could save but im not tempted to switch.

I forgot to mention that the monthly payments were more than what we currently pay with our supplier. I guess I could get a more accurate quote but I am not tempted to switch. Sometimes these things look too good to be true and often are when you look into the t's & c's.
