Changing energy suppliers every 12 months can be a pain, from looking around to find the best deal to the general hassle of switching. However, it has traditionally been the best way to keep prices low, especially when rates sharply rise after the first year deal. And then there’s the concern of wanting to use greener energy, but without the extortionate prices.

That’s why Octopus Energy have teamed up with Mumsnet to launch the Green Octopus tariff, which is the cheapest green tariff for the average household, anywhere in the UK. It offers 100% renewable electricity and carbon offsetting for gas, without the usual difficulties of switching and the shady price hikes.

Here’s what Jenny from Octopus Energy had to say: ‘We hear from a lot of people that switching supplier is just too much hassle. That’s why we’ve created this tariff: You can switch in two minutes from your phone, save over £200 a year for an average UK home on a Big 6 standard tariff, and go green at the same time. You don’t need a bill to hand - in fact, you don’t even need to know who your current supplier is. We’ll handle the switch with your old supplier, and we have really solid email and chat support too, so you can avoid call centre hell if you need to get in touch.’

To be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher take a look at the Octopus Energy website, get a quote and see how much you’ll save. Whether you decide to take up the offer or not, post below to let us know how it went. If you joined, how did you find the process, and if you didn’t, what stopped you?

Entries close midnight July 7th.

Thanks and good luck!

Just bought a house and the incumbent supplier was British Gas. They offered me good rates (in line with, or better than ebico, ecotricity, ovo, utility warehouse and good energy). (I checked them all.)

Then I learnt about you and I think you're coming a tiny bit lower; plus, your commitment to use green energy and I was convinced. Very easy to switch.

I've done all the comparisons based on the unit rates & standing charges (rather than estimations of consumption), which allow me to compare apples to apples. Even if some other supplier could have turned out to be cheaper (with real consumption rather than ex ante projections) the difference is going to be negligible. Your rates are definitely on the low side of the spectrum.

My referral code (for £15 for you) is: octopus.refr.cc/rafaelt

This was pretty easy to do. I was happy with the quote but as only switched last month, I will leave it for now and come back to it.

Lot cheaper than our current provider, nearly half off what we pay currently. I didn't realise we paid so much for our energy. Almost makes me suspicious of the new quote!

Really easy site to use, and I will probably look into it further, the idea of renewable is nice too.

I tried this and it wasn't cheaper than my current provider (swalec).. It was £9.26 more a month, but this may have been because we're now on a smart meter, and the site said that for the moment this would return to being a normal meter...

mogloveseggs · 05/07/2016 18:28

They come out roughly the same as what I pay now. Like the renewable idea though. Shall look into it further.

Just tried the quote as our existing provider keeps changing our direct debit...

We seem to use excessive amounts of gas and electricity ...,Blush and in spite of regularly switching tariff or provider, octopus are suggesting they could save us £95 per month...

That was using the facility to edit usage and use reasonably good estimates of our usage (think large 5 bed house, work from home with heating on, teenagers who leave stuff on,using tumble drier....

Will check this out further including their reputation as a company to deal with....

Had an interesting experience with a different provider at a rented flat earlier this year so would hesitate to use any provider that gets negative reviews/feedback...

Well, it said I would save £364. I have recently renewed with my current supplier on a years fixed tariff but will look at it again when I'm due to renew again.

Great, easy to use tool. We never use the big energy companies anyway, but I was interested to know how they compared, and how it compared to my current supplier (only switched 2 months ago). The estimated cost for Green Octopus came out at the same price as our current Ovo Energy cost, but at a much 'greener' level, which appeals to us. I will certainly consider switching to Green Octopus when our current contract ends.

I'd tend to be wary of a company I haven't heard of but they do sound interesting...I also take the 'you'd save x amount' with a pinch of salt as the fine print often has many clauses.

The website said it could save me £351 per year. I'm suspicious of websites that say they could save me money and have a list of assumptions they use.

If I was to seriously consider moving, I would look up the companies I would consider moving to and calculate the savings myself.

There was no option for a key meter but going on high usage on a standard meter gave a quote of £89.95 a month. We currently pay £80 a month so it is dearer. If they asked more questions on the quote and could give a more precise price eg asking what we pay now on a key payment then I'd be happy to switch if it was cheaper but for now im staying with BG as they are cheaper

Sounds like an excellent reason to switch - I have been thinking about this for some time as my existing supplier is very expensive.

Mine came out more than we currently pay but then again our current provider isn't 100% renewable. Sadly doesn't add up for us an all electric house!

It does save me a small amount but not enough for me to finish mid term with who i'm with at the moment as i'd have the cancellation fee. I'm quite savvy anyway and always check every comparison site before i buy to make sure i'm getting the best deal.

spanglisher · 30/06/2016 19:15

They claimed a saving of £351 against the big 6, but I've no idea how their estimated usage compares so it didn't really mean anything. I'd rather they let me input my current tariff so I could really compare. I'd also want to know more about their customer service as I haven't come across this company before.

quote seemed a bit expensive - not sure everything was right and i'm on a non-green tariff at the moment.

anyone trying to make comparing/switching and staying cheap easier is good so octopus are heading in the right direction.

It says I could save, but I don't think the options were specific enough re the meters. Mine wasn't listed, so I was prompted to choose standard. So the quote isn't really accurate. It may however prompt me to make enquiries with other companies to get some specific quotes to see if I could save enough to make the hassle of changing worthwhile.

Quite an expensive quote but easy to use and would defo use it in the future alongside other price comparison sites/apps.

We've been planning to switch suppliers because we're coming to the end of a fixed tarrif with one of the big six. On comparison sites Octopus has come out by far the cheapest and according to customer reviews it has better customer service than most of the others. Plus it has greener credentials. So, we've switched. After all, electricity is electricity whoever sells it to you.

Let's see how it goes...

A saving of £100 a year for me. Will investigate more but seems like it might well be worth switching.

There was a bit of a difference in the price I've been quoted but I've had bad experiences before with comparison sites where they've told me I would save xx amount and then it's actually gone on to cost me more
