Changing energy suppliers every 12 months can be a pain, from looking around to find the best deal to the general hassle of switching. However, it has traditionally been the best way to keep prices low, especially when rates sharply rise after the first year deal. And then there’s the concern of wanting to use greener energy, but without the extortionate prices.

That’s why Octopus Energy have teamed up with Mumsnet to launch the Green Octopus tariff, which is the cheapest green tariff for the average household, anywhere in the UK. It offers 100% renewable electricity and carbon offsetting for gas, without the usual difficulties of switching and the shady price hikes.

Here’s what Jenny from Octopus Energy had to say: ‘We hear from a lot of people that switching supplier is just too much hassle. That’s why we’ve created this tariff: You can switch in two minutes from your phone, save over £200 a year for an average UK home on a Big 6 standard tariff, and go green at the same time. You don’t need a bill to hand - in fact, you don’t even need to know who your current supplier is. We’ll handle the switch with your old supplier, and we have really solid email and chat support too, so you can avoid call centre hell if you need to get in touch.’

To be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher take a look at the Octopus Energy website, get a quote and see how much you’ll save. Whether you decide to take up the offer or not, post below to let us know how it went. If you joined, how did you find the process, and if you didn’t, what stopped you?

Entries close midnight July 7th.

Thanks and good luck!

It was easy to do the quote and I like that it was green but unfortunately much higher cost for me :(

RACHELSMITH45 · 12/06/2016 21:05

over £300 we could save, definitely worth a switch!

Kangakate · 12/06/2016 21:14

Good quote, but since I only switch a month ago I have switched. I like the idea that it's quick and the energy is green, but as an unknown company I may wait for some reviews

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/06/2016 21:43

It's a good initial quote and we're due to switch.
I'd need to do some reading around and get a few more quotes to be sure, but I like the fact it's a company using mostly renewable sources, especially as I live in an area where EDF are hoping to build another nuclear power plant.

Charbru123 · 12/06/2016 23:01

looks ok to me :)

yatota74 · 13/06/2016 08:07

Mine came out a lot cheaper and has now given me food for thought, I have not switched in years as I alway imagine it to be complicated ( I had a couple of bad experiences with changing internet providers) but I will deffinately look into this now.

WuTangFlan · 13/06/2016 09:14

Apologies if I missed this somewhere, but there doesn't seem to be an option for gas only?

The process was quick and easy, I like that there's a Green option but we're with Ecotricity and they are the best supplier I've found. They only have one tariff and it adjusts to the latest best price automatically so although the Octopus site was the easier comparison site I've seen, I don't think I'll switch.

sarah861421 · 13/06/2016 09:50

never heardof the company before, but I will certainly look into it, when I get a chance

LucyBo17 · 13/06/2016 12:47

My quote was higher than we currently pay but then we switch every year or so, so out tariff is good anyway.

frizziekizzie · 13/06/2016 14:29

I think it's great that it uses renewable energy, but my quote was far more expensive than what I currently pay. So, unfortunately, I won't be switching :( I liked the website but it does seem quite similar to competitor comparison websites.

kittensmittens12 · 13/06/2016 14:58

Mine was £43.46, which like some other commenters is higher than I currently pay. I wonder why?

cluckyhen · 13/06/2016 15:09

Yearly personal projection
£817.78
£68.15 by monthly Direct Debit
Based on someone in ???? using 4,299 kWh of electricity and 12,500 kWh of gas

That’s a yearly saving of:
£384!
vs the average 'Big 6' variable tariff

Wow - one to bear in mind when I move house later this year!

izbiz88 · 13/06/2016 15:44

My husband is always on the lookout to switch to cheaper energy suppliers and going off our quote it certainly seems like Octopus could offer us a good deal! We will definitely consider them next time we change.

CathyGlynn · 13/06/2016 18:07

I thought my bills were as cheap as I could get them but according to Octopus it could be even cheaper. Only thing is if I change now I would be penalised so it would really work out cheaper until it comes up for renewal.

Ooh £350 a month saving sounds good to me! I think we are definitely overpaying with our current supplier so am going to talk to DH later about switching.

madge47 · 13/06/2016 21:39

my quote was about the same as I am paying now not worth switching.

lyndseyh78 · 14/06/2016 13:44

The website was really easy to use and i got an instant quote! I could potentially save £374 a year which is great.

I will discuss this with my DH and if the figures are accurate i might be tempted to switch

ICanSeeYourPixelss · 14/06/2016 14:03

The quote was easy to do and I was told I could save £229 per year.
I did not take up the offer as I have just switched to OVO and it costs me £8 less a month with OVO. Smile

Bsummers · 15/06/2016 06:58

My yearly projection is £599.70 and it says I could save £154.

I'm not tempted to switch because I use a pay as you go meter system and don't use my gas and electric that much. So based on how much I spend per month I save much more then Octupus's quote.

But I do love the green aspect of it. That's a big plus, I also wouldn't switch because I've never heard of the company before, so I'd be a bit apprehensive about switching, I'd want to see reviews and hear about their service word of mouth before switching.

ILoveMyCaravan · 15/06/2016 10:38

Bit too vague and wasn't sure that the price they quoted would be accurate. There's a big difference in housing in my postcode, so I can't see how they can give an average price. I have just recently switched though and I went through a comparison site which gave me more peace of mind than using the Octopus site. All a bit too quick and airy fairy for my liking. Sorry.

jandoc · 15/06/2016 11:02

I haven't personally used them but my friend insists that they are great

Redhotchillidog · 15/06/2016 12:58

Although we have only just switched suppliers it is good to keep an eye on alternative options when it comes to switching. It will be interesting to see the comparison closer to the time. For now it looks like we would save, but you do need to drill down into the tariff to really get an understanding. Promising though and will definitely consider Octopus when we need to think about a cheaper deal.

lorka · 15/06/2016 13:06

I got a quote and it says I would save over £300. We are due to come to the end of our contract shortly so I will look closer at their tariffs then. Looks promising.

poopoopoo · 15/06/2016 14:17

Quick quote is enticing....
Yearly personal projection
£751.61
£62.63 by monthly Direct Debit
Based on someone in __ using 3100 kWh of electricity and 12500 kWh of gas

That’s a yearly saving of:
£342!
vs the average 'Big 6' variable tariff

however.......I am not sure how accurate this is I checked and over 6 months from January to June with British gas I have so far spent £545 using 7575 kwh (gas and electric) So a projection of 3100kwh for a year is a very inaccurate projection!
Also I have a smart meter which would not be used as a smart meter if I switched. I like the smart meter!

Cintacmrs123 · 15/06/2016 17:08

My quote was cheaper but struggled to find a breakdown to see how much gas or electricity they where quoting for
