Changing energy suppliers every 12 months can be a pain, from looking around to find the best deal to the general hassle of switching. However, it has traditionally been the best way to keep prices low, especially when rates sharply rise after the first year deal. And then there’s the concern of wanting to use greener energy, but without the extortionate prices.

That’s why Octopus Energy have teamed up with Mumsnet to launch the Green Octopus tariff, which is the cheapest green tariff for the average household, anywhere in the UK. It offers 100% renewable electricity and carbon offsetting for gas, without the usual difficulties of switching and the shady price hikes.

Here’s what Jenny from Octopus Energy had to say: ‘We hear from a lot of people that switching supplier is just too much hassle. That’s why we’ve created this tariff: You can switch in two minutes from your phone, save over £200 a year for an average UK home on a Big 6 standard tariff, and go green at the same time. You don’t need a bill to hand - in fact, you don’t even need to know who your current supplier is. We’ll handle the switch with your old supplier, and we have really solid email and chat support too, so you can avoid call centre hell if you need to get in touch.’

To be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher take a look at the Octopus Energy website, get a quote and see how much you’ll save. Whether you decide to take up the offer or not, post below to let us know how it went. If you joined, how did you find the process, and if you didn’t, what stopped you?

Entries close midnight July 7th.

Thanks and good luck!

i am weary about changing now because i have found they promise savings but in reality after about three months your bills jump up but they explain it as your consumption has increased. which it definitely has not.

Hmmm, roughly the same as I currently pay BG.
I will consider switching to a greener supplier, when I move house, whether that's Octopus or someone cheaper.

The quote was very quick and easy, I changed my supplier this way recently so wouldn't be doing it for a few months but I would definately
Y consider octopus in the future. Pretty sure this could save me money.

My quote was £36 per month and I currently pay £45 a month with Npower. So it is less, but it is still higher than other companies that were quoted on Uswitch which I was looking at a couple of days ago as my tariff is coming to an end

My quote was a bit bigger than the one I'm currently on. As I've just switched it wouldn't be worth switching again with the penalties I would have to pay but definitely one I'll use to compare in the future.

Mine says I'll save £351 per year. I will look at this in more detail, and if it holds up will consider changing.

Easy to use but should be based on current cost not usage - who knows their usage?!?

Anyway quote me about same just slightly higher than I currently pay (less than £1) so no pint switching

I've just begun to switch more regularly and I know that sometimes not having the information needed can be a pain. Also good that it's green energy.

Hopezibah · 16/06/2016 22:21

it has quoted me 87.68 per month. I know this is just based on an estimate but at the moment we are only paying £40 a month. Even changing it to medium usage comes in higher than that. I think it is important to shop around but at the moment we won't be switching.

Why won't you let me enter my spend? I don't know the kWh, but I definitely know I'm not a medium user - I use more gas but less electricity. I'm currently paying £100 pcm on DD to Flow Energy.

I wouldn't switch to you because I don't feel the quote you've given me is actually accurate for my usage/circumstances.

The quote I was given was £25 dearer than what we pay now, and nope, I wouldn't change from Ovo ever, their customer service is second to none, their prices are far and away cheaper than any other company we have looked at, and they are also a very green company and give you a 3% interest on any credit you have on your account, which is better than most banks! We wouldn't move for the world. xxx

Surprisingly easy to get a quote - I was pleased that you didn't have to put in lots of personal info before getting a figure. I could save £65 a year - haven't progressed this yet as I always worry about the work that switching might involve. But have been inspired to do more to shop around with household bills when I have a moment or two!

My quote was £70 pm but I currently pay £39 and am in credit! (Extraenergy) Octopus did seem cheeper on the TCRs so not sure what's going on there but I wont be switching. Ill take another look in December when my fix is expiring.

Sounds like a good plan to me - although I've been stung by this before, changing to a new tariff based on their calculations then within a few months it miraculously jumping in price!

Report

It was £12 more than i currently pay

Not heard of Octopus Energy before, so interested to hear the premise & try out the site for myself. The quote I was given anticipated a saving of £419 vs The Big 6 Variable Tarriff. The tarriff I'm on at the moment (with Scottish Power) costs me around £70 per month & the monthly cost quoted was £65. I think I'd have to get a more specific information on my usage to ensure the quote is accurate, but if it still comes out lower - I would certainly switch.
Anything which saves me time & money is a winner for me!

GruffaloPants · 19/06/2016 23:56

My quote is similar to what we pay now, but I'm shopping around and think I can get it cheaper.

I'd like to understand more if buying green energy really makes a difference, or if it is just a gimmick and those targets have to be met anyway? I might be swayed if I really felt choosing a green tariff would make a difference.

We are low users of energy so it's never worth us switching just on that basis. However I am seriously considering Octopus energy because of it's renewable electricity and carbon off setting for gas.

Even if you don't change companies, it's worth investigating what deals are available.
A couple of months ago, i moved on to a new (and cheaper) tariff with my existing supplier.

Mine came out £15 a monht dearer so not going to switch! Easy to use site but they didnt ask some of the questions I would've expected them too. Green energy seems the way forward though.

My quote was very similar to my current tariff on another provider, so it's not really worth me switching. However, the process was very easy and I'll be sure to check a new tariff next year to see if it has changed.
