Changing energy suppliers every 12 months can be a pain, from looking around to find the best deal to the general hassle of switching. However, it has traditionally been the best way to keep prices low, especially when rates sharply rise after the first year deal. And then there’s the concern of wanting to use greener energy, but without the extortionate prices.

That’s why Octopus Energy have teamed up with Mumsnet to launch the Green Octopus tariff, which is the cheapest green tariff for the average household, anywhere in the UK. It offers 100% renewable electricity and carbon offsetting for gas, without the usual difficulties of switching and the shady price hikes.

Here’s what Jenny from Octopus Energy had to say: ‘We hear from a lot of people that switching supplier is just too much hassle. That’s why we’ve created this tariff: You can switch in two minutes from your phone, save over £200 a year for an average UK home on a Big 6 standard tariff, and go green at the same time. You don’t need a bill to hand - in fact, you don’t even need to know who your current supplier is. We’ll handle the switch with your old supplier, and we have really solid email and chat support too, so you can avoid call centre hell if you need to get in touch.’

To be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher take a look at the Octopus Energy website, get a quote and see how much you’ll save. Whether you decide to take up the offer or not, post below to let us know how it went. If you joined, how did you find the process, and if you didn’t, what stopped you?

Entries close midnight July 7th.

Thanks and good luck!

No good for me as I was quoted £28 more than I pay already.

Looks like I could save around £50 a MONTH in energy bills! That sounds amazing actually!

This has given be the nudge I needed to look at my gas and electricity, I changed (over the phone) last year to British Gas, they have just increased my monthly direct debit by £20 per month.
My quote with Octopus energy came up cheaper (£180 a year) than British Gas, on the same usage I am paying, I like the fact its green energy too. I rang British Gas to see when my deal changed and I have to wait until December or I have a forfeit to pay, but I will definitely consider using Octopus to change and save. Am seriously considering taking the forfeit.....watch this space.....

I will consider it together with all the others.

This was very easy. We haven't switched but it is something I will discuss with my husband as soon as he arrives home.
Green energy is very appealing.

I'll def come back to Octopus and check again when our current contract ends as it looks like we could be saving!

I did the quote and it's more than what am paying at the minute but I will look again in 6 months time to see if there is any change its good to switch companies once a year to see who can give you the better deal and octopus don't lock you into any contracts which is good but for now I will be sticking with my current provider .I do think it's good that octopus are britains largest investors in solar farms which gets a big thumbs up for the green aspect from me.

My quote was higher than I am already paying - wont be switching, esp as I get clubcard points aswell

Easy to use mobile site, the price was very similar to our current monthly payments but I might consider switching for the greener aspects. I'm always a bit dubious about 'new' companies do will probably wait and see

Not an established well known company and working out more expensive than what I currently pay

Report
janeyf1 · 12/06/2016 08:51

The quote was £5 less per month than what I currently pay. I would seriously consider using Octopus as soon as my current deal ends. The penalties to switch beforehand from my current supplier would be however, too high.

Just done a quote & it would save me £374 a year although I'd have to fill it in with my actual usage to get a true reading but it sounds really good

Not great really - more than what I currently pay - but my husband is savvy about it and constantly searches the best deals!

I'm intrigued - says I could save £327 a year so I will definitely investigate further. We've never changed our energy provider - I know I ought to shop around but just never get round to it but this has piqued my interest

My quote wasn't much cheaper to be honest but moving house soon so may use this again.

The quote also put me on a higher tariff than i pay currently, they are entering a very competitive market, I wish them luck though ^^

Yearly saving of £197 but that's compared to the big 6 and I am not with any of those as I switched last year! It works out as £1 cheaper a month than the tariff I'm on now with Flow so I will stick where I am!

happysouls · 12/06/2016 10:36

This is a very easy to use and quick way to get a quote. I put in my actual usage figures for the last year and it did come up with a better price for variable, fixed and green tariffs! I like the idea of green 100% renewable energy alot and I would consider switching to this BUT I have only just switched and am tied in for a year! I'll look it up again when the time comes!

LeeR1985 · 12/06/2016 11:09

It'll save me a bit of money but i've always been a bit uneasy about switching. On paper it looks good as it saves money but if the customer service is terrible, it can make it a nightmare when contacting them about problems.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 12/06/2016 11:30

I'd never heard of them. Every year that I have switched its not the swich thats the issue though- its the customer service/misleading quotes.

Id maybe get a quote from them when the time comes. I do like their renewable energy promise.

It said I could save £249 a year over my current supplier - I shall have to look into this further. I cannot change at the moment as I have a contract for a while yet.

It seems quite expensive to me .

Quote was far more than I currently pay despite claims of how much they could save me per annum, not impressed with the site, I prefer to go direct to suppliers and renegotiate with my current supplier to get the best deal for us.
