Help with a name for my HR consultancy please

PiningForTheMoon · 18/10/2023 14:34

I'm a freelance HR consultant and have so far used my name as my business name but I don't love it.

I feel like I can't see the wood for the trees and would appreciate some outside perspective.

In terms of what I do, I work with SMEs to help the owners/Directors get the best from their people. Things like communication, motivation, engagement, development, productivity, succession planning, managing change and generally act as a sounding board. Being proactive to create the best environment/culture so employees can thrive.

I don't get involved in recruitment or disciplinaries.

Grateful for some inspiration.

I’m not sure if I’m either traditional or outside the box @Lwrenagain.

My background is big 4 and investment banking. I only work with organisations, not individuals and my favourite way to work is with people who manage employees to help them be the best and in turn get the best out of their teams. I tend to focus on communication and motivation rather than policies and disciplinaries.

Words I like are all flowery (eg serendipity) because out of work I’m a bit of a hippy.

Use a one word type of word?
Like lush, they're hippies and lush doesn't scream bathbomb until you see their "fresh handmade cosmetics" tag line.

Okay, (I'm a care worker so this isn't my usual thing!) But you liked the word people people are ... individuals, you're a hippy... the word indi/indy/indie because you're also independent!

So ...

Indi is the name and something like (more articulate and from someone who's
slept within the last few weeks!)

Indi
Individual focused rescourses

That kind of thing?

OP, is strikes me from what you have said that you specialise more in coaching/mentoring and development rather than the traditional HR consultant role. If, this is the case then perhaps your company name should be slanted to this and not "HR Consultant". If I am wrong, then please just completely ignore me!

You’re right @Anon1072 but I’m not a qualified coach so I want to steer away from calling myself that. I can use it to describe what I do, but probably not as my business name. So perhaps consultant can stay but choose something other than HR. People Consultant, Leadership Consultant, Development consultant etc

I like your thinking @Lwrenagain, I’m going to playing with the word and concept of ‘indie’. There is an organisation called HR Indies so I need to be careful not to step on toes.

Really, I’m a corporate hippy but I don’t think that makes sense to anyone except me so I thought I should keep my two lives separate.

I prefer to crack the whip rather thank the knife @Rincol and again, that’s more of a spare time hobby rather than a work related one.

I can indeed @Lwrenagain, I shall write a policy and mandate their thinking 😉

I think if you can get mindset in the title that would be good. Because you're work very much is around the positive mindset and the ripple effect of that. (Fwiw I'm a massive advocate of this!)

P.Moon Positive business mindset Consultant. Helping your business grow from within.

Or something better than that 🤣

But I think whatever you use needs to show what you do with growing a positive mindset because there's a massive business for it since covid and peoples mindsets have changed.

It’s all about the mindset isn’t it @itsgettingweird?

One of my favourite quotes is “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't – you're right,” by Henry Ford.

I very much focus on positive elements and how to move from some outdated methods which are based in fear.

No particular suggestions around the name, but I am a consultant and I have a company name that is not my name. I think the advantages of this are it can make you look bigger than you are, it makes it easier to subcontract work to other people if you want to grow or have an assistant because they're not just expecting you to do it, and ultimately although it may seem unlikely if you did want to sell your business is better to have a different name. I think it looks better at business events as well if you're You from a separate company. Those things may not be important to you though. I chose mine just through writing, a whole long list of words that were connected to what I did and I picked a couple of them.

Thanks for sharing your experience @MurielThrockmorton.

When you say words connected to what you did, were they about the outcome for the client?

OP posts:
MurielThrockmorton · 28/10/2023 13:40

Just anything I could think of, linked to outcomes or processes, but what I ended up with described the outcome for the client. Sometimes I wish I'd chosen something more lateral or abstract though. At one point there seemed to be a fashion for colour + animal, e.g. Blue Tiger, though I don't think I'd have gone as random as that!

That’s really helpful @MurielThrockmorton. I’ve got some scribbles but I need to go out soon so I’m going to get out the flip chart and coloured pens out later (once a facilitator…).

People pleaser sounds like a counselling / self help /motivator / find yourself advert.

If searching, I'd want HR in the title somewhere, or else how will anyone know you offer HR advice.

Oblomov23 · 28/10/2023 14:00

Now I've read what you do, it doesn't sound like classic HR advice to me. You are offering motivational employee stuff, how to help employers get the best out of their employees.

Exactly @Oblomov23, I use the line ‘get the best from your people’ a lot but it’s too long for a company name.

How about 'HR Matters'

How about 'HR Matters'

A long time ago I used to run a newsletter called People Matters @booksandbeans but HR matters works better with the dual meaning.

Unfortunately, there is one in Oz and I think I need to call myself something other than HR.

Outside the box HR is my suggestion but it’s probably rubbish. Because you described yourself as a corporate hippie that got me thinking outside the box as equivalent of not necessarily adopting a traditional rigid role.

Have a look a what similar companies are called.

Advance search on active companies on Companies House with this SIC code - 78300.

Which is the code for Human resources provision and management of human resources functions

Mountaindhew · 28/10/2023 14:51

And check any potential name on Companies House - there is already a Postive People Solutions, for example.

It's not a rubbish suggestion at all @Keepingittogetherstepbystep.

I get a bit 'what if people don't think I'm an out of the box thinker?' about such things. I need to work on that.

So, what about words that start with HR
So Happy/harmonious/healthy paired with results/resolutions/relations etc? It'll be easy to make a cool logo with that too!
