The new Mumsnet

So here it is, what you've all been waiting for (or dreading)... The new look Mumsnet; still no tickers, but lots of fabulous new content and a splendid new look (right?).

Don't forget that to get the best of the new look talk you need to click the Customize link at the top of Talk and change colour scheme to "Mumsnet New".

We're well aware of various minor glitches that we will fix over the next day or two. There are a few duff links around and a few pages that still need updating. But all the big stuff works so dive in and feel free to comment on the problems you find.

Right that's it I'm off to bed for a couple of hours, knock yourselves out.

I have a suggestion.... Could the bar with concep, preg, baby etc be deleted & the info moved to an item on the list below. It takes up lots of room

smugaboo · 30/01/2009 08:54

Has the look of the new site just changed in the last few minutes or am I just drunk? its less squishy and looks better.

(I'm in OZ by the way - its cocktail o'clock here)

Jessie179 · 30/01/2009 08:56

I love the new look, I think it looks much nicer and cleaner. Well done to everyone that was involved. I found the previous one too "busy"

IdrisTheDragon · 30/01/2009 08:59

Argh just switched to mumsnet new. Not squished up but I Do Not Like It. Not One Little Bit.

Almeida · 30/01/2009 08:59

Am using classic now as can scan thread topics & titles with less effort. The new look takes too much room up.

kayzr · 30/01/2009 09:03

I like it

BUT......

I hate the threads I'm on, with MN classic it would show who had posted and you could click on it and it would take you to that post. Now it just takes you to the first page of the thread!!!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 30/01/2009 09:13

Are the adverts bigger than they used to be?
I don't mind adverts in general but the placing of the ads at the moment seems too prominent

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:14

When you click on the Latest poster name (with a link on it) in I'm On, is it supposed to take you to their profile or to the end of the thread? Because at the moment it just takes you to the Talk page with the mumsnet philosophy at the top.

HellHathNoFury · 30/01/2009 09:21

I work on web design, and can really sympathise with tech who will have put in a lot of hard work.

I often work on new sites, which get flamed, but eventually people come around to liking them.

However.

There are a few basic problems with the new design that could pose problems - in terms of accessibility, the new text is hard to read, it's not 'black' and so the lack of contrast makes it hard on the eyes.

So much wasted whitespace either side.

Truncated thread titles and lack of ability to recognise which threads have been visited.

Also - it's worth remembering that a lotof people chose MN over other forums because of it's 'clean' appearance - it's still not in the still of Bounty (thank God) but I look less like I am actually working when I surf the site now ;)

Hopefully Tech will pick up on the comments and apply some tweaks??

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 30/01/2009 09:26

it looks great

but it REALLY hurts my eyes to read it, the text is so feint and small

RustyBear · 30/01/2009 09:35

Now on IE and on iPhone at work & comparing the two (instead of getting on with configuring the desktop on our 16 shiny new ICT suite computers)

The links at the top sticking out too far on the right seems to be an iPhone/Safari thing as it's OK on IE. Still get the rogue 'hides' if I have that option selected - on iPhone they stretch across the page, on IE, they go down.

Damn - I just put the hide option back to check if it was still playing up - and now it won't let me take it off again - I've tried every combination of save & refresh I can think of....

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:36

Lurker - try a shift-refresh (shift-F5) - on another thread Tech said it might be because you haven't picked up the latest style sheet. Text size hasn't actually changed.

pushchair · 30/01/2009 09:37

Ok I haven't read all of the posts but I am going to add that:
There is far too much appearing before you can read posts-Heading, ad, tabs, more things, big ad, big white space.
It is all squished
the posts are squashed between the stuff at the top and then low and behold more at the bottom.
I am sure I will discover more.
Moan moan moan.

edam · 30/01/2009 09:39

I get so much white space inc. ad it fills the whole ruddy page and I have to scroll down to even begin to see the thread.

RustyBear · 30/01/2009 09:39

I can change it on iphone, but not on IE.

Must actually do some work now, will check on Firefox & Chrome this evening

Generally though I like it - except I think the 'new' colour on the post bars is too pale - I'd like to be able to have the MN classic purply blue with the rest of the new changes - but that's just a personal thing.

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:46

For those on Mac, the shift-F5 equivalent is SHIFT-CMD R, I've just discovered.

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 09:54

(oh, and shift-f5 isn't shift-f5, it's ctrl-f5 ... bad tech)

piratecat · 30/01/2009 10:52

The sentences of our posts start right up close to the edge of the page.

I have to scroll to the right every time i want to see to the right, as in the view you have made it, the whole page doesn't fit in width ways iyswim.

then of course i have to scroll left again for the start of the next line.

ExtraFancy · 30/01/2009 10:58

I'm having the same problem as piratecat - any ideas how to view it so I don't have to scroll backwards and forwards thus giving myself a migraine?

ExtraFancy · 30/01/2009 11:00

Aprt from the scrolly problem, I do rather like it

RubberDuck · 30/01/2009 11:00

Is your window full screen? Or can you make the window bigger. Sounds to me like it's to do with screen resolution - it's a fixed width design which does make things more complicated for those with lower screen resolutions.

mileniwmffalcon · 30/01/2009 11:07

nothing that hasn't been said so far i'm sure, but to reiterate: posts are too squished together within a thread, thread titles too truncated in active convos, wrapping issue with ads (safari/mac), moon wrong (or have you given us an honorary full moon for all the palpitations being had over the changes? )

i love the new search box though - that alone is worth the niggles

Piratecat are you using classic/mn muted. They are not functioning properly at the moment (apologies).

Try the customise link and setting it to Mumsnet New for now, while we work on fixing classic etc.

ExtraFancy · 30/01/2009 11:11

It's full screen - I'm using FireFox but I only have a 15in monitor, would that make a difference?

mileniwmffalcon · 30/01/2009 11:11

ooh that's better what did you do?

loves it now
