Moderation Sex Board

onirgellep · 13/04/2023 23:06

Back in February Justine* committed to an urgent review of moderation of the Sex Board subsequent to the considerable concerns mainly arising from the longstanding Sex Chat thread

Unsurprisingly, issues continue

Would it be possible to have an update on the progress of the review?

And hear when do you anticipate it being completed and the new moderation put into action?

Thank you

I'm afraid I'm unable to link Justine's post on the thread References to Underage Sex on the Sex Board* page 13

I'm all for a Sex topic, but I think MNHQ should just ban any 'chat' threads.

Keep it for questions, discussions and info sharing, but none of the 'fnar fnar pearl necklace, facials wink wink' garbage that changes the whole tone of the place, and leads to inappropriate PM's from blokes, and websites featuring teen sex and incest being shared on here.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 16:34

@Maybebe you need to take it up with mumsnet then since in the thread titled "The Sex Topic - An Update on Moderation", YetanotherBeckymumsnet said specifically "The board is text based - we don’t allow NSFW (not safe for work) images.

We don’t allow links to any NSFW sites or personal profiles on other sites"

In the opening post.

Ah - I see your point but can MN be expected to check every time someone posts a link to a site? Isn't it like when someone posts a link to an aloe vera selling page, or a website selling dubious diet pills - A member of the community (us - you in this case, we done!) reports it and it gets taken down?

I don't see why a more authoritarian regime needs to be in place for the sex topic.

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2023 16:39

You find things abhorrent, then report them. I'm sorry but I wouldn't look at the sex topic while I was at work or with a child looking over my shoulder. The clue is in the title of the thread.

@Maybebe You're missing the point. Nobody is suggesting that the whole sex board should be closed.
Some posters are concerned about the sex chat thread re-emerging. It never seems to die away. Somehow or other, someone always starts it up again, in direct contravention of MNHQ's directive on the subject.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 16:40

@Maybebe I think someone posting a link should check themselves what the link is.

I regularly report spam shite selling aloe Vera and spells.

I do believe the sex topic should have a different standard of moderation, due to the potentially problematic type of sites linked to

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2023 16:40

I don't see why a more authoritarian regime needs to be in place for the sex topic.

It's a great pity that it is necessary. The posters there keep rekindling the sex chat thread.

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 16:45

I think we should just view the sex chatters as aloe vera sales persons!! I mean it's a bit annoying but it's not really causing any great offence is it?

As for the link that was posted, I agree @horridjobescapee - posters should check but that does seem to have been a mistake by the perhaps a bit over-zealous poster.

Mermaidparades · 14/04/2023 16:45

@TheShellBeach you're wonderfully frustrating, like a toddler that just won’t let something drop! I did not rekindle the sex chat thread. As you well know as you have the screenshot to prove it!! 🤣

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 16:48

@Maybebe I disagree that it's equivalent to spam selling spells.

It has the potential to be very damaging indeed to posters and also promotes links to sites that promote pornography which is problematic. Unless you think videos of teenaged sex and incest are ok?

That is EXACTLY the issue.

Mermaidparades · 14/04/2023 16:50

please leave @Maybebe alone, of course no one thinks those videos are ok. I didn’t realise they were there when I posted the link, I have apologised many times now for my error

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 16:51

I'm not specifically talking about you @Mermaidparades I'm talking about the sort of links that the sex threads will attract.

They are all spam posts though? This was a regular poster posting a link to a sex chat site with questionable content. It's hardly the same thing.

Mermaidparades · 14/04/2023 16:54

@horridjobescapee I’m sorry, I picked you up wrong!

Surplus2requirements · 14/04/2023 16:56

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 16:51

I'm not specifically talking about you @Mermaidparades I'm talking about the sort of links that the sex threads will attract.

I'm no expert and despite what others will tell you I'm no more a Sex Board regular than a regular on many other MN boards but I've never seen and only heard of one link being posted on the sex boards...which is now the subject of a 3rd Site Stuff thread so I doubt I've missed many

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 16:57

An advert for a diet pill is indeed very damaging if I have a difficult relationship with food.

Anyway - I was comparing the sex chat thread promoters to aloe vera sellers, not the posting of links.

Of course I think that all of that stuff is bad - the overwhelming majority of users does, certainly the poor poster who posted it does! - but it's starting to feel like you're rather using this extreme example to further a campaign against the sex board.

Looking at the sex board as a whole, over the last few months - how many awful degrading and heinous links have been posted and caused offence?

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 17:00

Take it up with MNHQ then because they have said that NSFW images or links should be posted. Or links to profiles on other sites. Or threads that are sex chat threads.

The recent thread has merely shown up - in my opinion - how much there needs to be more stringent moderation in the sex topic so as to ensure that something like this does not happen again.

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 17:03

Well, we don't need the report button anymore then do we? Because if everyone always follows all of the rules and guidelines then no one will ever be in breach and we can all just go about our lives.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 17:07

I do report.

However, first it has been suggested that those of us who have issue with the type of threads and links on the sex board just hide the topic. If we do so, who will report? The regulars don't seem to have the same standards as I do, therefore I cannot be sure that posts that I find offensive would be reported and so I look.

Second, the topic should be actively moderated. It is particularly putting mumsnet at risk of hosting links and videos That are at best distasteful and at worst illegal. (Due to the poor moderation and types of threads posted)

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 17:10

This is a genuine question and I'm not being goady, but do you know that no one else reported it? I have myself reported several threads and/or comments on the sex board. By the time I've received the standard "we're investigating" email from MNHQ the thread or comment is gone. So I know that there are sex board users who do report things. And there are really, rarely any posts with links - you will know that from your own observations.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 17:14

I didn't say no one else reported anything? I wasn't talking about a specific thread.

What I said was

therefore I cannot be sure that posts that I find offensive would be reported and so I look.

I thought what I said was pretty clear tbh

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 17:30

You're being a bit obtuse @horridjobescapee

You said that you report things because you can't be sure that other people won't report it. Also that you have no idea if anyone else has reported it. So perhaps you're diligently looking at the sex board, which makes you uncomfortable, but you needn't do that at all because all of the offensive things that you're reporting are being reported by other sex board users!

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 17:31

I'm not.

I report things that I find offensive or that I want MNHQ to take a look at.

Not just on the sex board

However, the sex board has a different type of post on it to the rest of mumsnet and I believe that it would be better if it were at the very least actively moderated by MNHQ.

horridjobescapee · 14/04/2023 17:32

I don't know who if anyone has reported anything I post.

I report because that's what MNHQ ask us to do if we feel a post is problematic for whatever reason.

Maybebe · 14/04/2023 17:39

You've said yourself that you're not a regular on the sex board. This implies that you only go there to police it.

I'm suggesting that maybe you don't need to do that because the regulars do report things.
