Moderation Sex Board

onirgellep · 13/04/2023 23:06

Back in February Justine* committed to an urgent review of moderation of the Sex Board subsequent to the considerable concerns mainly arising from the longstanding Sex Chat thread

Unsurprisingly, issues continue

Would it be possible to have an update on the progress of the review?

And hear when do you anticipate it being completed and the new moderation put into action?

Thank you

I'm afraid I'm unable to link Justine's post on the thread References to Underage Sex on the Sex Board* page 13

Hi @onirgellep - we're really sorry for the delay in responding. We'll do our best to answer the issues you've raised in due course but we're a bit thin on the ground just now.

As TheShellBeach pointed out at the start of the thread, we did respond to many of the queries that were raised on this thread - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4753533-the-sex-topic-an-update-on-moderation - if you use the Filter/See All option on the OP posts on that thread, you'll see that YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet posted 17 times, most recently on 14th March.

We appreciate your suggestions for additional warnings to be placed at the top of the Sex topic. The HQ message currently says:

'Only those who have been a registered user of Mumsnet for at least 7 days can post in this topic. Mumsnet is a site for grown-ups - you can choose what you want to share with other users but please don’t send unwanted PMs or be otherwise disrespectful.'

but we're open to reviewing this text if necessary.

As ever, please report any posts, threads or posters that concern you - we're always happy to check things out behind the scenes and will take action if we think someone's not here in good faith.

Thanks again for sharing your concerns. We'll be back to respond in more detail after the weekend but in the meantime we'd be grateful if this thread could remain about policy, rather than personal comments about individual posters.

Hello everyone - we've been getting a huge amount of reports about this thread so we just wanted to step in to politely request an end to what is becoming quite bullying behaviour.

Discussions like this often get heated but we'd like to remind you that Mumsnet is here to make parents' lives easier. While we encourage healthy and robust discussion, we hope that everyone can respect each other in their choices and express their views without resorting to personal attacks.

Peace and love
MNHQ

Hi all,

As requested by many of you, we're going to close this thread for the night so it doesn't get derailed any further and to give us a chance to review the points being raised.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi all. Thanks for your questions. While this thread has, unfortunately, been dominated by disagreements between posters, there are several questions for MNHQ that we’ll try to answer.

We reviewed our approach to the sex chat threads in February and more details can be found on this thread.

Firstly, we’ve never had the expectation that posters on the Sex board will moderate it themselves - like everywhere else on Mumsnet, we ask posters to report content for our community team to review. We also have no plans to make Sex (or anywhere) pre-moderated as we believe this would have a very negative effect of slowing down discussions, preventing those who need advice/support from receiving it, and would ultimately kill off the board. Quite honestly, we find things are reported really quickly and we act as fast as we can to deal with any issues.

We think there may be a perception that there’s a gang of ‘sex people’ who only post on Sex - we’ve not found this to be the case. This board has many regular, long-term posters that are across many topics. Clearly, sex is an important part of their lives and we don’t think it’s unreasonable for them to want to talk to others who feel the same.

Following the deletion of the chat threads, there’s been a few attempts to stealthily restart them but we’ve deleted these and will continue to do so. We’ve also banned a number of users that we didn’t think had the best of intentions. As for the site mentioned up thread (we won’t link), it has been recommended by MNers to other posters for years and we’ve not had previous concerns raised about it but we’ll have a further discussion about the points made on this thread.

We’re going to leave this thread closed given the direction it had taken but please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments, or if we’ve missed something.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your comments over the past week regarding the Sex board. It’s become clear from the discussion that we needed a rethink...
