Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

Under topics (so, for example, the Litter Tray) why, please, can you no longer see who the last poster was? You used to be able to. Also, photos are still small and sometimes posted sideways. I mean, Grumpy's cats (inc. TC) look most lovely and handsome anyway up but I'd prefer to see them the right way :)

kitchenfitting · 05/05/2022 12:38

Numbertheory - thanks for the link to the update from MN. However most problems just state we will fix so no idea if photos will be usable in short term or if I need to find another source. It also mentions accessibility will be taken up with those affected. Does anyone know what this means? Will they only resolve accessibility issues ie for vision, hand movements etc if someone messages a specific issue to them?

prettybird · 05/05/2022 12:55

The link is working now but wasn't first thing this morning when I posted Hmm

But the fact remains that 2 weeks in, MN is slower than it was and with many, many glitches.

The one I'm still being irritated by is that "the new posts on a watched thread" is still glitching on the iOS app (at least Hmm), so that it looks like all the threads I'm watching have been posts whereas that's not the case Confused It's got to the point where I'm memorising the number of posts on a thread so that I can tell by that whether or not there are new posts. Hmm

prettybird · 05/05/2022 08:00

@NumberTheory In the first post Justine linked to this page. It's currently down, but I'm sure it'll be back up in a few hours.

The page has been down for a few days now Hmm

It’s down whenever I look during UK nighttime (I’m not in the UK at the moment), but it was up for me yesterday during the day and is today as well.

prettybird · 05/05/2022 16:12

Maybe I was just "unlucky" when I was looking yesterday and the day before Wink

there seems to be an awful lot of "unluckiness" with this "upgrade" Hmm

Good morning.
This page has lots of information on where we're at with the issues caused by the platform upgrade:
www.mumsnet.com/articles/talk-updates

We seem to be able to open that page, so could those of you who can't open it let us know which device you're using, and which browser? Thank you.

That page is fairly pointless. Would be a good idea, in the first instance, to add a date by each issue to show when it’s been fixed.

also, seems like there are many other issues (which have been raised on this thread and others) that don’t seem to be on there.

as an aside, the “capitalise new paragraph” obviously still isn’t working.

a huge bugbear is that notifications STILL take you back to the first page of the thread (rather than to the point that you last read on that thread). This alone is making MN really irritating to keep up with.

visually, threads were MUCH easier to read when each post header had a blue bar highlighting their name etc.

not sure how much your web developers were paid, but I’d definitely be asking for a refund.

am scrabbling my way around to keep an eye on a few important threads, but using this site right now is not a pleasant experience.

MoiraQueen · 06/05/2022 06:08

Thank you for the link. I was waiting for the coloured highlight on my posts to reappear after the update. Checked the link of fixes, where it is mentioned and finding out it was in settings was a revelation. There are even colour choices...who knew 😀Cheers, I'm easily pleased!

Whinge · 06/05/2022 07:08

TrashyPanda · 05/05/2022 10:41

That page hasn’t been updated since 26 April.
has there been no further progress?

Interestingly it now says Last updated May 5, 2022. I guess they realised you actually need to update the page you created in order to give updates. 🤣

EspeciallyDistracted · 06/05/2022 07:16

Found another problem yesterday - automatic paragraph numbering, please get rid of it (and any other auto-formatting that may have snuck in).

Hi Kim, there has been no update on the accessibility issues since the vague "we will talk to people" when it was first published.

Its still a nightmare for accessibility tools. I appreciate one or two of the removed keyboard short cuts have been restored but in all other respects its just as bad and difficult to use. I'm not the only one spending far less time here due to it being just difficult to use.

The poor performance issues aggravate any issue with accessibility tools. Even with an ad blocker switched on to reduce the performance issues its still painful to use at best.

Mac/Safari user but its the same in Chrome, Firefox and Vivaldi.

Also threads I'm watching seems to randomly change. I'm seeing threads I haven't looked at in a couple of years pop back in whilst others disappear.

SueMumsnet · 06/05/2022 10:30

Hi all - quick update - thanks for all of your feedback, we're working through the list. We've just released the code to make the OP collapsable by default on page 2 onwards on mobile.

@SueMumsnet

WHEN DO YOU PLAN TO SORT OUT THE IMAGES?

I used to look at oh, maybe a couple of dozen threads a day, or more.

Now I look at three: this one, another about "we are going to fix this mess, honest we are", and the Ukraine one. That's it.

SueMumsnet · 06/05/2022 11:19

hi @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime - the image issue is a tricky one - it seems to be working fine for most people. Are you able to let me know what's not working for you, with a screenshot if possible? Sorry to be a pain.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/05/2022 11:23

I cannot do screenshots, but the answer to your question is size. Until this "improvement", when I clicked on an image from eg Twitter I then saw it at a readable size. Now, I might as well not bother clicking except that I see more of the edges round the unreadably small script. Using Mozilla Firefox, Linux, desktop machine with a 24" screen.

Sorry, meant to add: this is a major reason for my not bothering with many threads: people post image-links to make points clear, andif I can't read them they don't make anything clear at all.

Exactly the same problem with me, click on an image and it remains tiny and blurred, previously it defaulted to a reasonable, clear readable size, now it is just a white box in the middle of my screen with the images lost in the middle of the box surrounding by a waste of white.

Google Chrome, Laptop.

Iwasfeelingepic · 06/05/2022 12:17

Some of my bookmarks still aren't working. They seem to work until I click on an image, post on the page or sometimes they just decide not to work.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/05/2022 12:38

@SueMumsnet while you are here there is another thing, from yesterday:

I find that such additions to posts as that at www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4539506-ukraine-invasion-part-23?page=38 strawberriesarenot · 05/05/2022 13:00

Followed by another post reading "I didn't write those last 2 paragraphs of knitting pattern or whatever it is."

really do nothing for the readable quality of the board. What on earth was that about? It's not the only example I have seen, just the one that I was able to find quickly.

EspeciallyDistracted · 06/05/2022 21:20

Just to follow up on the automatic paragraph numbering - I am on a thread of lists (26 books thread), so a typical post starts with a paragraph number which isn’t 1. I can’t seem to find a way to turn it off and have had to resort to losing the space after the full stop, others are using commas. Surely any auto-correct features should be something you opt into in your settings, not just on by default.

Buffyismyaltaego · 07/05/2022 03:31

@SueMumsnet

Can't see this flagged so may just be me but on the iPhone app

The list on 'watching' Keeps resetting.

I'll go down the list of threads I'm watching and will I watch them all. As soon as I refresh or log back into the app they're all back there and highlighted as having new posts but none of them do.

BertieBotts · 07/05/2022 06:57

Here is a random image for example. On my computer, it's 1263 x 947 pixels.

BertieBotts · 07/05/2022 06:59

Now I've uploaded it, it's 800 x 600.

That is admittedly better than it was a couple of weeks ago but why can't we upload bigger pictures?

CPL593H · 07/05/2022 07:01

Apologies if it has been mentioned, but "I'm watching" is only the threads I'm "on", not the ones I've 2watched" but not posted on . Bookmarking also doesn't seem to be working for me. On a desktop, don't use the app.

On my android phone this image enlarges when I click on it.

Is this what you mean? The image is only slightly bigger than original and unreadable, surrounded by acres of useless whitespace and worst of all the box locks to the centre of the screen and I can't move it (which is another accessibility issue as the box is difficult to close via command).
