Format change

Hi, my format has changed where before it was an old style where I could just see the last few threads but now when I click on what I'm on, it's showing me everything.

When I came on mumsnet today, it forced me to login again and then the format has changed. How can I go back to the original? I'm on an android phone.

I don't mind most of the changes, but the amount of scrolling is mad (see screenshots). Sometimes only one post on a whole page.

I'm using the website version on Google Chrome. I got back from holiday yesterday and these are some of the problems I've found so far:

  1. The scroll bar at the right hand side of the screen keeps disappearing.

  2. No advanced search function.

  3. If you click on a notification, instead of taking you to the point in the thread where you last read to, it takes you to the beginning of the thread.

  4. When clicking on posts in general, instead of taking you to the first post, it takes you to the thread title and then there's lots of blank space before you get to the posts.

  5. I was permanently logged in to MN, however I became logged out and had to do a password reset. For some reason this logged me into this username which I did for a namechange one off, however my old username was just a Username which I had been meaning to change anyway so no big deal but it could be important for other people to lose all their posting histories.

I'm sure there's loads more but that's all I can think of for now. Not sure why the format had to be changed in the first place.

And it appears my photos post twice!

Out of interest, I did a search for a thread I’d been semi-keeping up with a few days ago, but forgot to bookmark. I can’t remember who posted it or what topic it was in, but in the Old Times I’d have done an advanced search and with the search terms I can well remember (it was only Wednesday when I last saw it!), I’m confident I’d have found it.

With the caveat that it could have been deleted, there’s no trace of it anywhere in the new search….really frustrating, as I wanted to know what happened!

Iwasfeelingepic · 24/04/2022 21:55

The bookmark function still not working . It's getting really infuriating

JaneJeffer · 24/04/2022 21:56

Anyone else getting booted out of the app when they scroll down this thread?

HaveringWavering · 24/04/2022 22:41

The search is rubbish. I just did a search for a phrase in quotation marks, with a very specific spelling - it was “ninja Kidz” (a YouTube channel name; my son loves it and I wondered what other parents thought).
It’s returned a load of threads about blenders (nutri ninja) and a million with just the word “kids” in it- even though I searched “kidZ” not “kidS”. It has ignored that it’s a complete phrase.

Why would it do that? No search engines work that way!

diddl · 25/04/2022 07:54

I can't figure the search at all.

Just get the words I've put in coming up in totally unconnected text.

Wanting to search in Telly Addicts & it doesn't seem to come up as an option!

yes me, every time

Lougle · 30/04/2022 22:34

The search is terrible. A tip:

Go to Google. Type the phrase into Google, leave a space then type 'site:www.mumsnet.com/Talk'

Google will search Mumsnet talk boards specifically for the phrase.

If you also type before:YYYY-MM-DD or after: YYYY-MM-DD (or both) it will search within a date range you specify.

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/04/2022 23:02

yep Lou that is how I currently search. OFC it is dangerous, in a business way, to drive your client base away from your online platform to perform a function that your website could offer, but there you go...

Thisisit2022 · 01/05/2022 09:33

Still got a constant red dot on notifications.

WeAllHaveWings · 01/05/2022 10:47

For me some threads are displaing closer to the old format and some in the horrible new format? The whole thing is just all over the place and annoying right now.

Another thing the new platform isn't doing, is cutting out unnecessary carriage returns at the end of the post. I'm deliberately going to add 10 carriage returns after this text to illustrate.

Oh good! Just what we needed, more white 😉

HarmonicAnalysis · 02/05/2022 13:27

Agree about the excessive white space and glare. I'm also finding the quoted posts terrible, with the double line spacing causing yet more scrolling and the meaningless jumble of vertical lines at the side making it impossible to see who's said what once you get into multiple nested comments. I don't even bother trying to read any quoted posts now, just scroll on by. But the whole experience now just seems to be endless scrolling to the point my finger's never off the button. It's physically tiring after a surprisingly short time, and just generally depressing. 😞

AnastasiaRomanov · 02/05/2022 13:29

I can’t post at all when on my laptop. It doesn’t allow me to type into the message field.

DinosaursEatMan · 02/05/2022 14:03

I’ve had to limit reading MN to short bursts, used to spend my lunch hour catching up but have had two migraines straight afterwards, presumably due to white space/formatting.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 04/05/2022 12:06

Another user frustrated with the clunky search function! I am trying to search a certain user using their username, but it only comes up for posts until the 24th April.

And none of the posts that come up appear to be in any sort of order.

diddl · 04/05/2022 12:09

I finally got around to watching something called "The Mire".

Thought I'd have a look & see what others thought of it.

No option to search in "Telly Addicts" & all I got was stuff for Mirena!

Not even close!!

Whilst some things have been fixed, the search facility is next to useless. If I search for words I know I have used in previous posts, it mostly doesn't find them. It claims I have only ever made two posts with the word "admissions" and two with the word "appeal", which is ludicrous.

Things I am still unhappy with:

  • posts are narrower and offset to the left. This looks ok at the top of a thread where there are adverts, etc. on the right balancing the layout, but scrolling down just leaves a vast expanse of grey on the right and the narrowness of posts plus the font used means there is more scrolling to get to the bottom of the page
  • looking at a forum, there are five blank lines before we get to any of the threads
  • I can no longer easily switch between a paged view of a thread and viewing the whole thread
  • No bullet symbols on bullet points. I'm surprised this hasn't been fixed as it is a simple stylesheet change. If Mumsnet think bullet points look better without bullets, I disagree
  • Notifications seem to be somewhat random - sometimes I receive a notification when there are new posts on a thread I'm watching, sometimes I don't
  • When I do receive a notification, clicking it takes me to the top of the thread rather than the new post(s)
On the positive side, now that the bugs have been fixed and I've figured out how to do paragraphs (there should really be some help for this), I like the new PM system. I also think the new look is cleaner than the old one.
Lougle · 06/05/2022 13:16

I commented that if posters add extra carriage returns, they show up in the post as dead space, last week.

Now I'm often finding that the carriage return still happens but the cursor doesn't move, so you don't get to type on the line below unless you tap on it. But it's not consistent. It happens in Low-carb boot camp but not here.

This is very basic stuff!

Lougle · 06/05/2022 13:17

And the empty carriage returns are still there!

diddl · 06/05/2022 14:49

If you copy & paste a part of someone's post-how do you bold it?

Can't seem to get it to work for that!

prh47bridge · 06/05/2022 17:01

If you copy & paste a part of someone's post-how do you bold it?

Just did it by highlighting the pasted text and clicking on the Bold button.

Re my earlier post, I see that there are bullets for bullet points, but they are very light grey. I can see them on posts on a white background, but they are barely visible on the background I've chosen for my own posts. Not a sensible choice of colour for the bullets.
