New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars. Star

If you’ve got any questions or comments, please add them to this thread.

Thank you.

See screenshots

and im not visually impaired I just have strong reading glasses.

This image, I had to zoom to 200% to have the slighest chance of reading it.

And then unzoom the screen back down to 90% in order to have a screen whereby I could see the next post on the thread.

TheOrigRights · 20/04/2022 15:52

Fairly sure you can go to your own settings and change your "posts per page" to 100.... ?

Thank you, I didn't know this. Done.

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/04/2022 13:22

Can't get rid of the "Make life easier with Mumsnet Premuim" at the top of the pages.

If you are running Adblock+ you can use the "block element" feature to kill that annoying banner permanently.

Thank you - have done that now!

Scrahilliv · 20/04/2022 15:59

@Nancydrawn - I think you need an explanation sticky for some of the changes at the top of every forum. So, for instance, it took half an hour of playing around on the site to figure out how to see more than 25 posts at once (no more button of 100 at the top) or do an advanced search.
Please can someone explain to me how to see more than 25 posts at once? I really liked the viewing 100 posts option and can't work out how to do it now.

FatLadySang · 20/04/2022 14:20

Also, I miss the refresh button at the bottom of each page…..easy way to see if any new posts.

I agree with this.

MermaidEyes · 20/04/2022 16:10

Well, I've come back for a quick check and active is still showing the same zombie threads as this morning and nothing else, so time to log off I guess. I'll try again tomorrow.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/04/2022 16:11

Still having to give cookie consent for every page and also getting this if I try to click back

Fulmine · 20/04/2022 16:14

There's certainly something odd going on with Trending. It only shows threads I've looked at already, the most recent any of them have been posted on is around 40 minutes ago, and some of them haven't been posted on for several hours or even days.

VestofAbsurdity · 20/04/2022 16:16

Scrahilliv · 20/04/2022 16:04

I agree with this.

Yes the lack of a Refresh Button is so damn annoying, what on earth is the point of taking this away?

peachgreen · 20/04/2022 16:18

Can't you just refresh your browser? On-page refresh buttons have been gone from most sites for years.

peachgreen · 20/04/2022 16:19

I'm with others on the desktop version having a weird amount of whitespace but it looks great on mobile!

AchillesPoirot · 20/04/2022 16:23

@otherbookmarks sorry I don't understand why you've tagged me?

@otherbookmarks sorry I don't understand why you've tagged me?

It was because I was viewing the images you'd added to your post, and you'd asked if anyone can see them. I could see posts there but not read the content as it was too small.

AchillesPoirot
Went on the app. To see if I could open the private message. Tried to open this actual thread and got the attached.

Also can someone let me know if these posts are showing up?

Just done this - thank you!

Sooverthemill · 20/04/2022 16:32

If it makes a difference I'm using safari. I don't use the app as it used to be too clunky

If anyone is interested, I’ve worked out how to see the MN emojis. You press the face (next to the @ button). Then the m mumsnet logo does come up and you press that and the MN emojis come up.

it’s so intuitive. Grin

With the greatest respect this is the Boris Johnson non answer. The NHS is a shambles and the answer is "we have spent 50 bazillion on the NHS this year". Its entirely academic if you can't use the service.

How much of your testing was conducted by professional testing companies or teams and what happened to the accessibility testing? What proportion of the testing was well meaning but bluntly amateur testers and how were they reporting key areas of functionality? Did they have clear metrics to work against?

Cobbling the old site design into the new architecture was always a risky decision but it has made an accessibility nightmare on the desktop and most accessibility kit users will be on the desktop.

We appreciate that its a relatively old site. So, surely, did your professional testing and release teams.

None of this was helped by the notification consisting of a solitary thread in site stuff warning people that the migration was happening. Because everyone starts their day in site stuff?

Where are the stickies on AIBU/Chat at least to say what has happened and with simple instructions to find missing and moved features? Are they hiding under the half dozen completely empty rows at the top of each topic?
I'm assuming bump/reset has been removed as I asked upthread and still have not been able to find it.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 16:46

And another issue (I've scanned the thread, don't think I've seen it noted but might be wrong)

When (on app) you filter by OP's posts, then click 'Go to Post' at the end of a particular post, it only goes to the first post, not the one it's meant to jump too.

It's hard to imagine how changing platform can have lead to this much of a mess.

C8H10N4O2 · 20/04/2022 16:46

Apologies @PuppyMonkey. I was trying to respond to @SueMumsnet 's post about the vast testing effort. Something odd seems to have changed between preview, edit and post my response which showed quotes for the correct post. No idea what happened and at this stage - losing the will to keep trying!

You have to do it in your settings now - there's no button on the thread any more...

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 16:50

The Active Thread situation is just nuts.

Here's an example of one started in 2018 Just found out I’m pregnant.. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/3306474-Just-found-out-I-m-pregnant

Which is appearing in active. The OP had shared a positive pregnancy test from 2018! If all has gone well, that baby is nearly 4 - and posters have posted today sharing their own positive results!

HereIGoAgainAndAgainAndAgain · 20/04/2022 16:53

Previous bookmarks have disappeared. Watch list is empty and I hate having to swap between the trending and active

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 16:54

I can't even begin to tell you how much testing was done before we released. Hundreds and hundreds of users tested it exhaustively for us. When a website's been around for 22 years there are so many layers of complexity to work through. I know the problems are annoying, but we're v grateful for all the posts and we'll get as many of them as possible sorted asap. Thanks.

What a woeful answer.

Firstly, it's not only users that should test it. It's actual testers!

Secondly, the issue of a 22 year old site being an explanation is rubbish. I work in an area where we regularly have to upgrade a particular platform, changing functionality & UX. there are issues but not like today, where basic functions cease to work.

It's amazing a brand like MN can be so unprofessional.

EarringsandLipstick · 20/04/2022 16:55

And reiterating again - bookmarks aren't working on the app
