New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

Did you actually stop to think what the screen was going to look like for those of us who use MN on a laptop? Because dreadful doesn't quite cover it.

No social media site is worth paying for! There will always be another business opportunity waiting in the wings!

Absolutely none of the threads in my Active are recent. Most of them seem to have been started several months, or even years ago. But people obviously haven't noticed the original dates and are happily posting, assuming someone has just started the thread today. The original OPs are going to be very confused with the sudden influx of new comments!

Same issue as @ArrrMeHearties about an alleged new PM (private message, not prime minister alas).

Also WTF is this - when I open a topic, or active threads, there are 5 blank lines at the top.

I'd echo the concerns about accessibility and the quote-in-quote-in-quote functionality, that does not look at all compatible with the rules. Your accessibility statement should indicate who did your accessibility testing for you and when it will next be repeated.

How accessible is this to people using assistive tech e.g screen readers?
was anyone with a visual impairment involved in testing?
I'm not VI but from my knowledge the site appears utterly inaccessible

When you quote someone on the website it doesn't show up on the app either

Please, please sort it out - the current format is dire! Please reinstate the bold/non-bold differentiation for unread/read threads, the ability to "Show 100 messages" in a thread, the ability to jump to the first/last pages of a thread, and please update the "trending" threads box as they're all old threads. There are multiple empty lines at the top of each topic page too, they need removing. It's far harder to read clearly than the old format too. I'm not resistant to change, but this change is definitely far worse than what you already had - why have you done it?!

This is dire! Really don’t like this “new” format.Hopefully it will keep me away ,instead of wasting hours on here.

I don't understand why they've launched this without properly testing, when there are still massive issues with functionality and accessibility. Why didn't they test it properly and fix major things before launching? Also, why would you make things more difficult to use? Take away functions and not let people know?

My app isn’t working (iPhone) active is full of zombie threads and watching/I’m on tells me I have no internet connection. Mobile site is fine though

If I try and search a username in 'Search' it doesn't work properly.

This is such a mess. I am so shocked a site as big as MN launched this mess before sorting out all the problems.

I'm presuming this is just me missing something, as nobody else seems to have mentioned it, but... where has the AIBU topic gone?!

When I click on ‘I’m on’ it seems to be bringing up every thread I’ve ever posted on, not just the ones from the last three days. Don’t like it!!!

The 'view 100 posts' option has gone.

nb I would search this thread to see if that issue has already been raised but I',m buggered if I'm going to search through all 18 pages one by one.

Ignore me - AIBU was mysteriously hidden and I've now unhidden it!

I'd love to but unfortunately the pop up for the uploaded image is smaller than the uploaded image and I can't read it.

How many of those hundreds and hundreds of people that tested it for you were visually impaired. For a site as popular as this it should have been run past some of the major disability organisations that deal with sight loss, autism - you know, the ones that help people who find changes hard to cope with as there are a lot of us out there. MSE did this a year or so ago and I went from being on there a lot each day to a couple of times a year and I can see this happening here too

Fairly sure you can go to your own settings and change your "posts per page" to 100.... ?

There seem to be acres of empty space. I get a huge banner advertising Premium (which I already have) which takes up almost half of every page. Then at the top of every thread list (active or on specific boards) there are about 6 empty lines with no thread titles in and some blank grey boxes which I guess should have adverts. I have to scroll down by 2 pages just to get to any actual live threads!

Yup, I can't see them. I'm having to hold my laptop screen UP TO MY FACE.

I agree it's also a bit rubbish for users on hands-free and/or using dictation software for reasons of disability, eg arthritic, hearing impaired and ND. BIG SIGH.

MN became a big part of my life because of my disabilities - it allowed me to participate in campaigns, politics, fun, chat, life and all sorts of engagement. But I'm not entirely sure this new platform is as good as the other one. I will persevere as best I can, but it does concern me.

Same for me - very annoying 😡
