New Talk launching tonight - please read!

Hello everyone.

After a bump in the road on last week’s attempt (sorry about that) we’re re-platforming Mumsnet Talk tonight. Because of this, the site will be down from midnight tonight (19/4) until 5am on Wednesday (20/4) morning.

For those of us resistant to change - don’t panic! The functionality of the site won’t change very much for now apart from some improvements to existing features like search and private messages. Our plan is to add more features/make updates once we are settled into the new platform.

However, there are a few things that you should be aware of before logging in tomorrow:

The first time you log on to Mumsnet post-replatforming you will need to remember your password. If you can’t (and let’s face it, few of us can) then you’ll need to reset your password. Sorry if that’s a pain - but it is the only secure way to do this.

You may need to update your browser. If you still view Mumsnet on an older browser you may experience compatibility problems with images, videos and links not working properly and you might not be able to post on a thread or fill in a form. To ensure you avoid these kinds of issues, we suggest you update your browser. Please click here for more information about re-platforming and how to update your browser.

And, not forgetting a massive thank you and unMumsnetty hugs to everyone who helped us test the new platform. You’re all stars.

I've had to re login to app and all my posts are now back coloured in green for OP and red for mine!

Can't get rid of the "Make life easier with Mumsnet Premuim" at the top of the pages.

I have a feeling it's deliberate to try and get us to pay for premium!

Threads I'm on don't show in active.

so I’ve realised this is also the case on mobile too. So if I’m scrolling with my left hand, I need to use my right hand to click on the little arrow to take me to the thread/post.

please can you change it so clicking on the message, or the username will also take us to the thread?

I have intermittent issues with my hands. I can’t be doing with small (and they are teeny) arrows to press on a bad day

I can[t use apostrophes anymore! I get a square bracket instead....

I really miss being able to see how many new posts have been made on a busy thread since I last opened it; I don't need to see three of them, but I do need to know whether they are three of three or three of seventy-three since I last looked. It makes a difference because if it is three, I can have a quick look, but if it is seventy-three I need to devote a lot more time to catching up with what has been said.

I'd like to have back the rest of the "I'm watching" threads that I had last night, too; one of them is in "I'm on", and has "watch this thread" ticked, but it is not in "I'm watching", and that seems simply perverse. I can't find any I was watching that were just threads with things in them that I wanted to know about rather than threads I posted to.

Are Active Conversations not updating on the ios app? It seems to be the same titles since this morning.

And some of the resurrected zombie threads are odd - like someone isdeliberately resurrecting them - I don't think they are but the comments are a bit odd?

I hate this new version. I can't go straight to my most recent post in a thread. Even 'I'm on'. I have to log in each and every time I open MN. I can't 'quote' I can't get to my posts quickly

Fully agree on this. The desktop site feels very much like an iOS app, which isn't a compliment; they're different things.

A few things I've noticed (some of which have been mentioned):

• I think you need an explanation sticky for some of the changes at the top of every forum. So, for instance, it took half an hour of playing around on the site to figure out how to see more than 25 posts at once (no more button of 100 at the top) or do an advanced search.

• The font/spacing on the desktop site is dire. Everything's really spaced out, so that it takes huge amounts of scrolling in order to read even 25 posts. The old version was much more compact, and thus much more readable. I'm sure this doesn't help with accessibility, etc., but for me I think the danger is that people aren't going to read the previous posts/whole thread even more than they used toit's just going to be responses to the OP, which means threads won't have staying power. I'm attaching a picture of what I seeso much wasted space.

• The font size is also really big for me, and maybe even a new font? Or just large. Would be great to be able to adjust. I'm attaching a picture so that you can see the difference. It used to be that the font in the Trending column and the font in the posts was pretty similar; now they feel really different.

• On the 'advanced search', I like being able to click the topics I'm interested in, but the sliding bar for dates is bad, particularly as there's so much ground to cover. What this means in practice is that a tiny slide results in months' more results. I was trying to narrow it down to yesterday and today, and what I got was either just today or three months ago to today.

• Pictures are showing up tiny on a big white screen, as someone posted above. They're actually larger on the main screen then they are when you click on them.

• When you click on a forum, the top six to seven lines (perhaps where the stickies used to be) are all blank.

I know rolling out a new version is hard, but I think feedback is still useful. I will say, if the new version stays as it currently is, I'm much less likely to use the site.

NB: The first pic is to show you how narrow the actual posts are compared to the site and how oddly spaced they are--only three posts on that whole page. The second is to show you the font differential.

To make it clear why it's weird, you really have to blow up the picture so it's the same size as a laptop screen. Because on a laptop screen, the proportions are way off. Reads like a tiny mobile site in the middle of your screen.

To get "quote", when I want to reply I have to click on the three dots after "Add Message, Bookmark, Report", and it then shows me "quote, PM, see all". I feel that is laborious and a bit silly, because it really is not obvious.

It's like having to click on something special to see the MN emojis, but getting all the rest first. (And no longer having explanations about what the MN ones mean, so no new user will ever know what we are saying if we use them.)

One more picture, to try to get a better sense of the spacing issues. On the old version, these would have covered perhaps half the vertical space on the screen. On the new, I have to scroll an entire page to read just four short posts. And this is on a screen of a 13" laptop.

I am on a sodding great go-to-hell desktop machine with a screen more than 12" tall, and I see three or four posts at a time, depending how long they are. The OP I can see all of it if I scroll down, but I can see only the OP on the screen plus three lines of the next post.

I agree, the layout is totally designed for Portrait layout, and using landscape just results in empty side space, or worse still side space with adverts.

Also, I miss the refresh button at the bottom of each page…..easy way to see if any new posts.
