any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
Parpophone · 14/02/2022 12:33

Or a combined Wardle topic so that all the wordle/nerdle/whatever-dle threads can be there too.

LilyMumsnet · 14/02/2022 19:02

Hi OP

Thanks for the suggestion.

We tend to open topics based on whether or not there is a majority of people interested. We'll keep an eye on this thread.

now agree with this

Yes - please create a new topic or move threads to 'in the news'. I am having to hide multiple threads as I have no wish to see, hear or read about it (and it's nobody's business why not so I'm not going to respond to any challenges).

TellMeMoreHellebore · 24/02/2022 13:14

no

it wouldn't work anyway

aibu is a topic for aibu, even if war related
chat... a place for general chat, which may spill over to general war references

i wont tolerate being 'told off' for mentioning it either

tigger1001 · 24/02/2022 13:22

Why not hide threads you don't want to read rather than asking for them to be squirrelled away?

This is a major news story. People will want to discuss it. And they should be allowed to do so. There is the tool available to hide threads you don't want to see. That should be enough

I think you need to come off MN for a while then. This is important
Juno22 · 24/02/2022 13:24

I will be furious MN if you do this just to pacify one person who seems unwilling to hide threads they are not interested in.

Absolutely agree. Even CBBC Newsround is covering it - in an appropriate way. This should absolutely not be hidden away. Thankfully OP's other thread seems overwhelmingly to disagree with her.

I agree and also about the one for word games.

all the little ostriches will get together to say it makes them anxious...

do ostriches wear pearls i wonder!?

chicagononsense · 24/02/2022 13:30

Ukraine does not and should not be hidden away.

There is a hide button for anyone wishing to hide threads they do not want to read.

cakeorwine · 24/02/2022 13:32

Hide things away so people can't find them and talk about them?

Chances are things will settle down with the threads soon.

It's an important topic at the moment. Just like energy threads. Other things that make people worry. If people can't see them, it doesn't mean it's not going on. But if you can't see them easily, you don't have much knowledge or useful information about a subject.

Pixiedust1234 · 24/02/2022 13:34

I think its more that there are loads of the same threads as people can't be bothered to see if somebody else has posted similar. Just how many threads do we need to see with Russia in the title? If people can't keep it to a couple of threads then move them all to a different area. Why should I hide several threads a day instead of just one section?

I'm with you op.

Which are of course, directly related. The interplay of world events may make siloing threads difficult.
However, personally I rather wish more people would use existing topics such as News rather than dumping everything into AIBU and Chat

BreakingUpWithMyPhone · 24/02/2022 13:39

I think it's probably a mistake to have a separate topic that will be huge and ongoing. The Covid topic is a good example of this - it's been everyone's life for the past two years, I don't know that it helps having a separate topic for it. And everyone saying Why isn't this in the Covid topic every 5 minutes 😄, what a bore.

This. I don't want to read about pushchairs or wordle so I don't open the threads. I'm also not reading many of the "war" threads either, but I wouldn't dream of expecting them to be shoved into the darkest corner in order not to "upset".
FairyCakeWings · 24/02/2022 14:12

I think this is a good idea.

It worked with the coronavirus topic and Covid gave us far more to chat or be unreasonable about in our day to day lives than war in Ukraine can right now.

It would be a nice thing to do for all the people that are getting anxiety at every mention of it.

WouldIwasShookspeared · 24/02/2022 14:21

If you are wanting to assess the level of interest for this, Lily and are wanting posters to say which they'd prefer then my vote is no to a war topic, I'd prefer it kept as is.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/02/2022 14:32

Ridiculous suggestion, This topic should not be hidden away.

heldinadream · 24/02/2022 14:38

No no no. That would be a mistake. Honestly people who are made anxious have to learn to monitor their own boundaries and not expect the rest of us to take care of them all the time, it's ridiculous. Possibly if the situation is ongoing there might be an argument for a special board - in a few weeks time. But to cordon it off now would be a massive mistake, it's literally the thing everyone should be attending to and getting to grips with unless for some reason they need not to.
