any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:

@Pixiedust1234

I think its more that there are loads of the same threads as people can't be bothered to see if somebody else has posted similar. Just how many threads do we need to see with Russia in the title? If people can't keep it to a couple of threads then move them all to a different area. Why should I hide several threads a day instead of just one section?

I'm with you op.

This exactly. I am SO sick of seeing Russia/Ukraine threads on AIBU now, and it's only just started!!! Fine, if people wanna chat about it/rant/go loco or whatever, but starting dozens of threads a day - ALL on AIBU - is just stupid and boring.

They are all virtually saying the same thing. Either get a Russia/Ukraine/War topic, OR have a bloody 'sticky' at the top of the NEWS board. (Not on AIBU, it doesn't belong in there.)

@Samcro YANBU It's as annoying as hell. I have hidden a dozen threads just in the last 2-3 hours alone!!!

And people saying people are WRONG to suggest a separate topic/separate board can bore off. People are entitled to their opinions, and theirs/mine are as valid as yours.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2022 23:44

Well said @BearOfEasttown. I understand people will want to discuss it, and I'm guessing the armchair experts will be out in force like they are (or were) on the Covid threads.

BearOfEasttown · 24/02/2022 23:44

@LilyMumsnet

Hi OP

Thanks for the suggestion.

We tend to open topics based on whether or not there is a majority of people interested. We'll keep an eye on this thread.

@LilyMumsnet Seriously, it's like whack-a-mole on AIBU at the moment. A new thread on Russia/Ukraine being started 3 or 4 times a hour. Confused

I think it needs a separate topic/page....

Cross post. Thanks @Sparklingbrook Smile
AlexaShutUp · 24/02/2022 23:52

Your objection is that it's boring, @BearOfEasttown? It must be very inconvenient for you to have your normal entertainment disrupted by people wanting to talk about war in a distant country. No wonder you want to have it boxed away neatly so that you don't have to think about it. I am sure that the Ukrainian people would love not to have to think about it either.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2022 23:56

The subject itself is not boring. Far from it. You can read all about it on all of the news channels. It’s not compulsory to start or read loads of threads about it on MN though.

Deliberateplanning · 24/02/2022 23:56

Please don't hide these threads away in a separate topic . It is SO important, it cannot be boxed up somewhere. It's just too important.

Indeed not, but lots of people obviously want to, so why shouldn't they? It is not compulsory to click on the threads if you don't want to read them.

How is having a separate topic hiding them away? 🤷‍♀️ If you don’t hide the topic they’ll be there for you to see. Do you want to see thread after thread about it in AIBU, the topic known for petty gripes and parking disputes?
Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 00:00

Of course they should if they want to and if it has it’s own topic they’ll find those threads all in one place. Handy.

AlexaShutUp · 25/02/2022 00:02

It's really hard for me to get my head around the fact that innocent people have been killed today, the Ukrainian population are facing a terrifying situation and we are facing one of the biggest threats to peace in Europe in decades, and the biggest concern that people have is that active threads on MN is getting too cluttered up with people talking about it. Seriously?

At the moment it's not armchair experts, it's people panicking about the sky falling in. And that just adds to people's stress, rather than leading to interesting discussion.

Who said it's anyone's biggest concern?

We can be concerned about more than one thing. I'm actually posting in serious discussions about this elsewhere. Mumsnet isn't geared up for it.

If it isn't a big concern @saraclara, then a separate board isn't needed, is it

You're being disingenuous. This is what you said:

and the biggest concern that people have

It's not the biggest concern that I have (or I suspect anyone on this thread has). If we all only posted with opinions about the biggest single concern in our lives MN would be a very boring place.

We often post about random annoyances and irritations. And this being the Site Stuff branch, some of us are posting about something that's annoying us at the moment.
It's probably about #193 in my life priorities and concerns, but I can still have an opinion.

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/02/2022 00:16

Alexa if it's on a separate board it won't affect you, because it will still crop up on Active for you.

What you then get is an inocuous thread about daffodils or spring or something and then it takes off on a tangent about war/Russia/Ukraine.....and some indignant poster then comes along and says ' there's a topic to talk about war, don't discuss it here'

But it's conversation and how it flows. Can't police people for going off on a tangent

TellMeMoreHellebore · 25/02/2022 00:22

@XenoBitch

How do you hide threads? I am on desktop and it seems you have to actually open it to have the option... which defeats the point.
On my laptop I just tick the box down the right hand side....hide hide hide

No need to open threads

@saraclara, I know it's annoying you but it's annoying me that people are shallow enough to get annoyed by trivia like this when a sovereign country has been invaded and innocent people have been killed. It's petty and offensive that people want to just tidy it out of view so that their entertainment isn't disrupted.

Sparklingbrook · 25/02/2022 00:29

Covid has it's own topic. Up until the last few weeks it was probably the busiest topic on the whole site. Covid wasn't 'tidied out of view' there were loads of posts on it every day. And if people didn't want to see the threads they could hide the Topic. it would just be like that.

Yeah, and it was as annoying as fuck when people posted something covid related on another board and there was a whole chorus of the thread police bleating to get conversations moved. Why do people have to control what others do? Why not just scroll on if you're not interested?

People post about relationships in AIBU. They don't get asked to move it to Relationships. They post about TV programmes and are not asked to move it to Telly Addicts. They post about schools and are not asked to move it to Education. I have no objection to the creation of a particular topic per se but I do object to the attempts to control and censor the discussions on every other board that will inevitably follow.
