any chance of a covid style war topic for all the "are we going to war " threads please.

OP posts:
Juno22 · 24/02/2022 17:33

Samcro my apologies, I mixed you up with another poster.

XenoBitch · 24/02/2022 17:36

How do you hide threads? I am on desktop and it seems you have to actually open it to have the option... which defeats the point.

A580Hojas · 24/02/2022 19:19

Yes, you do have to open it to hide it - annoying! In ye olden days you could hide from active conversations.

User5438965 · 24/02/2022 20:12

Yes, the threads are taking over like the Covid ones did, if I want to know about the war I will watch the news.

User5438965 · 24/02/2022 20:16

The whole site is going to be an hysterical mess again like it was for Covid.

NativityDreaming · 24/02/2022 20:20

I would like to see this change as well, I think it is a good suggestion.

StarsAndSugarlumps · 24/02/2022 20:20

@saraclara

If it was all rational, informed discussion about what is currently going on then fair enough, but we are already at the point today when the following are being discussed almost as as foregone conclusions.

Prepping.
Conscription.
Total annihilation by a nuclear strike.
Evacuating the UK.
People overheard discussing buying guns.

Agreed. If this carries on, I simply won't spend time here. Which might not be a bad thing as I spend too much time on Mumsnet.
The hysteria and constant presence of war and fear is something I really don't need. I don't have anxiety, I'm no more mentally fragile than the next person. But it just isn't what I'm here for.

If there's a branch, I might visit it occasionally. And I'll be watching the news. I'm not sticking my head in the sand, but I don't need lots of panicky voices when I come here to pass the time..

I totally agree with this.

A new topic would be good.

You only have to look at some of the nastiness on this thread to see how divisive it is on the main boards.

Exactly. There's nothing that can be said here that won't be speculation and/or anxiety. So it's ridiculous to suggest that those of us who world rather not have to see thread titles about building bunkers, are putting our heads in the sand.

Mumsnet isn't the place to find informed political international reportage.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/02/2022 20:23

Absolutely not.

It's one of the biggest news stories ever.

Of course people are posting. Stop whinging OP.

bangaverage · 24/02/2022 20:23

I'd like a war topic so I can hide it. I'm terrified.

Don't open them.

If MN had been around in the 1930s, there would have been people asking the threads on Hitler to be moved, and then surprised when WW2 kicked off.

There seems to be people who don't want to know. Who want to bury their heads.

This affects us all. Things will calm down on here.

If the threads are taking over, then that probably means that the majority of MNers want to talk about this stuff. Why do you feel that you should be able to control where and how they talk about it just because you don't want to join in.

If you want to talk about something else, then start another thread. I'm sure that there are plenty of like-minded people who will join you.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2022 22:38

I think it's a good idea. It's like back in 2020 when it was thread after thread about Covid with a lot of differing information/opinions.
Those that are interested in constantly discussing it will know where to find the threads and post, those that don't want to can hide the topic.

Lampface · 24/02/2022 22:39

Lumping a war and a word game into the same box is actually disgusting.

MN please don't make a separate topic, these conversations are important.

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2022 22:41

Wouldn't War having it's own topic make it even more important? Log into MN, straight to the War topic for those that want to discuss it.
saraclara · 24/02/2022 22:53

I'm not sure why making a branch for these threads makes them less important. I'd have thought it was the other way round. I don't think that war and conflict is a 'chat' or 'AIBU' subject, personally. I think it does deserve its own area.

ouch321 · 24/02/2022 23:06

Some v weird/bossy posts in this thread.

Why should there not be a war topic?

Do you object to the cooking topics, the doghouse, the home decor topics etc?

Why does the site need to be disorganised?

What's the point in having topics if everyone puts everything into Chat/AIBU?

Otherwise you may as well delete all the topic areas and just have every single thread about anything at all 'loose'.

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/02/2022 23:08

I think it's important enough to have its own topic
then I can hide it just like COVID and Brexit, some conversations are good, and some of them are absolute bollocks

Suzi888 · 24/02/2022 23:09

We won’t go to war. All Putin has to do is press the button, we would be dust.

We will just sit and watch….

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/02/2022 23:17

Well said ouch321

Sparklingbrook · 24/02/2022 23:21

Do you object to the cooking topics, the doghouse, the home decor topics etc?

Exactly. I have all of those topics hidden so the threads don't appear on my Active list.

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/02/2022 23:22

If it becomes a separate topic it will still come up in active for anyone who hasn't hidden the topic.
I have just looked at active, and the first 7 threads are about it

BearOfEasttown · 24/02/2022 23:30

So ask MN to get rid of aibu and chat altogether then, if you want every single thread to be categorised. Or just hide those boards if you find the variety of topics disturbing.

If you have general topics at all, people should be able to post what they like in them. It is "weird and bossy" to insist that they can't. I don't want to be dictated to in that way.

If we have a war topic, certain people will start bleating to move every single thread that is remotely related to the current situation into that topic. Why should they, when people have chosen to post in AIBU or Chat? If people start posting about war in the style and beauty topic, then fair enough. Ask for it to be moved. But I will carry on posting whatever I want to post on the general boards, and anyone who doesn't like it will be free to scroll on.
