How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Hi @JanineMumsnet Will it be possible to choose which notifications you want to receive, as you can with email?

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 13:08

@WitchesSpelleas this is functionality we want to add eventually, but for the first iteration it will simply be mentions and watched threads on for all.

Just to say this is paused at the moment and is undergoing some final testing. I will update the thread tomorrow when it is rolled out again.

I seem to be the only one who has noticed it! Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 09/11/2020 18:47

What would be really useful is that notifications are given when posts are posted to old threads that you’ve previously started or commented on.

My “threads you’re on” only lasts a week, so for example, every week I have to refind the Strictly thread as it’s fallen off that list by the time the next week’s episode comes around.

Could that be included as part of the update?

WitchesSpelleas · 09/11/2020 18:56

That's a good idea, Shirley. Especially if it could include threads you've started. I started a thread trying to find the title of a book - no one found it and the thread 'died' and dropped off my watching list. Purely by chance I clicked on 'threads I started' some time later and a brilliant poster had come up with the book I was seeking. I was delighted but I could easily have missed it.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 08:43

@ShirleyPhallus and @WitchesSpelleas You are totally right and these are absolutely things we want to implement further down the line. I can't say when that will be, but it is something we have in our sights to improve.

We are now rolling out this feature again. Those who see the feature may notice there are already notifications in their feed that date back a few days. This is because the service has been live in the background collecting notification data. You should be able to 'mark all as read' if you have already seen these posts previously.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 13:36

Can we turn them off?

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 13:55

@SoupDragon you are able to turn off email notifications by going to you talk preferences here. At the moment you cannot turn off the feed notifications.

Please turn it off again, I have no interest in it and only want notifications if I get a PM.

LangClegsInSpace · 10/11/2020 14:38

Please make it stop.

JuliaJohnston · 10/11/2020 15:01

Why can't we turn it off?? Hmm Not many posters actually want this?

bearlyactive · 10/11/2020 15:04

Please add a "turn off" feature! I don't need notifications every five minutes that someone's posted on a thread with hundreds of posts already.

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 15:05

Arrrrrrggghhhh why can't it be turned off it's already driving me barmy!

mycatlovesmenotyou · 10/11/2020 15:07

How can it be turned off? One thing I hate is notifications......

ShirleyPhallus · 10/11/2020 15:08

This feature is nuts. How is it different to “threads I’m on” or watching?

It’s the feature no one asked for and no one wants!

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 15:09

It’s the feature no one asked for and no one wants!

Yep, an edit button is impossible to implement despite years of requests so instead let's add a function no one wants, needs or asked for!

DramaAlpaca · 10/11/2020 15:12

I don't want this.

If I want to go back to a thread I do, I don't want or need to be notified about new posts on a thread I've been on or am watching.

I've turned my email notifications off for good reason, and I find these constant notifications popping up intrusive and annoying.

Please make it optional.

diddl · 10/11/2020 15:14

Just coming on to ask how to turn it off!

JustscreamMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:15

Hello all, I think there's some confusion here - we aren't sending any more notifications or changing the frequency of emails or anything - it's merely the addition of a little red dot, showing you that you have new notifications in your notifications list (eg there's a new post on thread I'm watching.) It's pretty standard practice on websites and something that some users have asked for and wondered why Mumsnet doesn't have.
If it's operating any different from that for anyone then please let us know!

RupertRupertTheBear · 10/11/2020 15:17

It's annoying. Can we have a way to switch it off please.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/11/2020 15:17

Just coming on to ask how to turn it off!

Same here. It's very annoying.

Samcro · 10/11/2020 15:20

yikes, so we can't turn it off.
really not useful (((daily mail sad face)))

DappledThings · 10/11/2020 15:21

Another plea to be able to turn it off please.
