How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

I can't find a way to get off it once I've clicked mark all read unless I scroll right to the bottom of the page? If I go back the notifications reappear?

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:18

@bruffin do you have a screen shot of what you mean by this, as this shouldn't be happening

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:19

@mogloveseggs if you refresh the page the number on the notification should disappear.

@WorraLiberty those were the days. 'Anyone need the landline I am going on the internet!' Screeeeeeech. Grin

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 16:24
@SoupDragon you are able to turn off email notifications by going to you talk preferences here. At the moment you cannot turn off the feed notifications.
Yes, I've turned off the email ones because I don't want notifications. I don't want or need them at all. As I've turned them off they should be off.

You've added it because "some" people said they want it, will you be doing the "off switch" because "some" people say they want it?

SoupDragon · 10/11/2020 16:25

I can see people have posted on threads just by looking. I don't need to be told about it.

ByeDon · 10/11/2020 16:26

This is horrific

Please let us turn them off

It’s so distracting to the user experience

HerFlowersToLove · 10/11/2020 16:29

Please can there be an option to turn it off. I'll never use it, and just find it really irritating.

Saucery · 10/11/2020 16:30

It’s quite irritating. Will probably get used to it, check and clear once a day or something.
It’s sweet how MN adopts things that other sites have had for ages and the new feature sits there, looking out of place like lipstick on a pig Grin

HerFlowersToLove · 10/11/2020 16:32

Also, on a phone, without actually clicking, there's no way of knowing whether a. someone has posted on a thread (which I don't give a bugger about) or b. I have a private message, which I might actually want to know.

Please make it go away.

chomalungma · 10/11/2020 16:37

I've noticed them.
They aren't going away when I've read them

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 16:39

Lipstick on a pig 🤣🤣
TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 10/11/2020 16:40

Ewww I hate this. I got excited thinking I had 20+ PMs. Then realised I'm not actually that popular at all SadGrin

What I would like is for threads to stay in TIO for longer, like a PP said they drop out and then you have to remember you were on them go and find them again.

Notifications that you've been @ ed would be OK (just) provided you can turn it off. Only because I don't seem to get emails, don't think I've turned them off, and on a busy thread it can be easy to miss one.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 10/11/2020 16:42

Can we get a feature to turn them off? It's so annoying. I use threads I'm on and I'm watching, this new notification thing is pointless. It's giving me information I already know in an irritating way, I'd rather keep the red icon for PM's.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/11/2020 16:42

@WitchesSpelleas

I seem to be the only one who has noticed it! Grin
No I noticed it straight away, I just didn't see this thread.

@JanineMumsnet

I'd like to know if we can turn it off. Personally I find it really annoying. I have the notifications in my email I don't need this bright colour annoying me on my phone screen

Sorry

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:43

@chomalungma when you say you've read the notifications, what do you mean? Do you mean you've looked at the feed but taken no other action on the feed? Or do you mean you have clicked into the feed and clicked on the notifications individually to read the posts on the thread? Or are you going to the feed and selecting 'mark all as read'? The notifications will disappear only if you click on them or if you select 'mark all as read'

MNHQ are missing a trick if they don't shortly announce it'll be turn offable for Premium members!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/11/2020 16:45

Another vote for "please let me turn this off".

I know you say "it's merely the addition of a little red dot" - but little red dots usually mean I have a message. I don't get many messages, but am never going to read them again as I will just ignore the red dot from now on.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 16:45

I love this! Every other site I post on has notifications.

Thank you MN!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 10/11/2020 16:45

I don't want to have to go and select things and mark them as read. That's extra effort for me. And the number will just go up again.

I suppose I could stop watching threads. Or posting on threads. Except I've just posted on this one.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 16:46

@HokeyWokey

I love this! Every other site I post on has notifications.

Thank you MN!

I don't post on any other sites so don't understand why this is so brilliant. Confused Enlighten me.
trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/11/2020 16:48

I don't want to have notifications. Why can't we have the choice of turning them off? It's annoying and unnecessary.

WunWun · 10/11/2020 16:48

This is so annoying. Please let us me able to turn it off. Its totally pointless. I'm getting notifications about threads I've hidden. I don't want notifications. Its distracting to have them there and makes me compelled to clear them even though I have zero interest in them.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/11/2020 16:49

Now I'm going to get notifications about this thread, damn!!

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 16:49

I always wondered why MN didn't have notifications tbh. It's a standard feature of most sites.
