How to view your Mumsnet notifications

554 replies

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Thanks Spartacus.

I am being very dumb - I cannot find "customise". (Settings felt like the obvious place to look, but I can't find it).

CaraDuneRedux · 18/11/2020 09:35

Is "customize" only available to premium members?

Not sure what device you are using, but on my phone customise is on the drop down menu accessed by pressing the blue arrow I've pointed to here. Smile

I'm on a laptop (or phone via web-browser which looks the same), so no little blue arrow. Sad

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 18/11/2020 09:44

If I change my phone to desktop view the arrow is here instead. Other than that I have no idea.

Yay, brilliant. Thanks Spartacus and others.

No customise option on desktop for me - just want the notifications to stop every time someone comments on a thread I've also commented on!

@earthyfire would you be able to share a screen shot of the page without the customise option as this should be there?

If you are unable to access your talk preferences from the menu, you should be able to view them here www.mumsnet.com/Talk?call=Preferences

Any feedback on the bookmarking issue @JanineMumsnet?

JanineMumsnet · 19/11/2020 15:56

@LittleMissNaice

Unread notifications should take you to the exact post if it's a mention or the first unread post made since you previously looked at that thread.

Mentions should always take you to the specific post you were mentioned in even if you have a bookmark set.

Your notifications feed won't take you to your bookmark.

But if you're saying that you are being taken to an entirely random place within the thread it would be good to get an example of where this happens. It would be easiest for mentions. If you could send me the exact URL linked in your mention and then if the link doesn't take you there could you post a screen shot of where in the thread it does take you?

Thanks

@JanineMumsnet

Your mention took me to the top of the current page. URL:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4074206-How-to-view-your-Mumsnet-notifications?msgid=101899121

Normal notifications take me to the top of a page, usually the last page of a thread, occasionally the first page. Never to an actual post. To be honest if it's not designed to take me to a bookmark, I might as well switch it off and go back to using email.

LittleMissNaice · 19/11/2020 16:18

I can add a screen shot if that really helps, but it's literally just the top of the web page.

I don't have one on my desk top either.
JanineMumsnet · 19/11/2020 16:24

@LittleMissNaice

Thanks for this info.

A screen shot would be helpful, because I don't know how many posts per page you viewing as you can customise this in your talk preferences.

Thanks

Screen shot for the first mention today. 25 posts per page. Safari, iPhone.

Ironically, the most recent mention did bring me to your post but that's the first time it's happened.

@JustscreamMumsnet

Hello all, I think there's some confusion here - we aren't sending any more notifications or changing the frequency of emails or anything - it's merely the addition of a little red dot, showing you that you have new notifications in your notifications list (eg there's a new post on thread I'm watching.) It's pretty standard practice on websites and something that some users have asked for and wondered why Mumsnet doesn't have. If it's operating any different from that for anyone then please let us know!
It may be standard elsewhere, but there are loads of people including me who want the ability to suppress it.
SoupDragon · 19/11/2020 18:14

You can stop the red dot appearing. I don't see it any more so, as far as I'm concerned, it's all gone away.

I've turned notifications off but still getting them.

Can I just clarify, are you still getting the red dot even though you have turned it off?

You will still be able to access the feed which will still update with notifications if you turn it off, but you should see the red dot.

Sorry I've only just seen this message because I am ignoring the annoying red dot. Yes it's still there. I turned notifications off but when I go back to it it's ticked again.

Haven't checked for a while though so that might have changed by now but I still have growing numbers on my horrible red dot.

@MrsBrunch

That shouldn't be happening. It would be great if you can try to untick the setting and save it again to see if it works now.

If it doesn't work, could you let me know what device and browser you are using?

@JanineMumsnet I am pleased to report that, at the moment, it appears to be remaining unticked and I am finally free of the cursed little blighters.

Thank you Flowers

Aztectrousers · 06/12/2020 10:07

Every time I click on the notifications I am being asked to log in. I’m already logged in so don’t understand why it’s doing this. I’m unable to read my notifications as a result.

Whyistheteacold · 07/12/2020 09:52

@JanineMumsnet when is the mumsnet app getting notifications?!

JanineMumsnet · 07/12/2020 12:45

@Aztectrousers is this still happening? What device/browser are you using?
