How to view your Mumsnet notifications

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

@LittleMissLockdown

Good point about the low visibility of the "mark all as read" button - we'll look at making that more prominent asap. Thanks

Why not add a turn off notifications option whilst you're at it? Why would you not give your users the option?

As said we'll let things settle for a bit and see if folks still feel as strongly - if so then of we can look at adding an opt out. But experience tells me sometimes people get OK with things that they initially are sceptical of. Plus the mark all as read change is just cosmetic - won't require much back end work to do.
Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 15:46

I didn't understand the @ thing either, switched that off straight away. Surely if you are posting on a thread you know if you've had a mention. Unless you only want to post again if someone mentions you? Confused

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2020 15:47

I have 4 but click onto it and nothing

Not quite sure of the point of them

I am still reeling from 'Most Active' being renamed 'Trending' actually. Angry Grin

So you think we will just stop noticing the HUGE red circle??? The polite thing to do is to respect you users as adults and give them a choice, not treat them like children who will eventually get used to something if left long enough. Hmm

Dddaddy · 10/11/2020 15:49

It’s awful. Please change it so I can turn it off

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 15:49

I quite like it.

I was having a cup of tea earlier, clicked on it and had a little read through the notifications.

Either way, it's easy enough to ignore if you don't.

PollyRoulson · 10/11/2020 15:49

Hahah most of my notifications are to this thread telling MN to turn off the notifications Smile

Justine we all hate change, you know this, so my advice is to make there there soothing noises and distribute gentle hand pats until we forget about it (next week should just about do it, I reckon)

GaryTheDemon · 10/11/2020 15:51

Marked all as red, 3 mins later it’s back up to 10 because it’s recording absolutely all activity on all threads. I wouldn’t mind so much if this was something I could click through to and see, it’s having it there ticking away visibly which I dislike.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:51

@Blondeshavemorefun oh no! That shouldn't happen, when you click the icon you should see a drop down with your usual account options and an addition link to your notifications feed. Are you saying that doesn't happen at all for you? If so, what device/browser are you using?

@ShirleyPhallus do you have a screen shot? That shouldn't be happening - it should clear all your notifications.

It's not about hating change per se, but the read dot used to mean that you had a message!

Misandrylovescompany · 10/11/2020 15:53

Wtaf is this! Turn it off! What a pain!

I thought that was a bell icon?
PearPickingPorky · 10/11/2020 15:54

I want to be able to turn it off, I don't like it.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 15:55

What happens to the PM bell icon if you have the red notifications blob too?

vanillandhoney · 10/11/2020 15:55

Nah, the decent thing to do is to provide your users with what they want, which in this case is an "off" button.

Why don't you want to do that? Confused

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2020 15:55

Good question.

Try messaging me if you want and I'll screenshot Grin

diddl · 10/11/2020 15:56

Sorry, yes, it was a bell wasn't it?Blush

PearPickingPorky · 10/11/2020 15:56

There are some threads I post on while idly browsing because I'm bored (eg AIBU), and I don't care for updates.

If I can't turn this off, I'll post less.

FlibbertyGiblets · 10/11/2020 15:57

I have messaged you too, Sparklers...

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 15:57

@WorraLiberty Done!

Yes I think Facebook had a red dot many years ago and then they changed to an envelope or something?

God I'm confused Blush

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2020 15:59

I had deleted all the 20+ notifications. No bell but a red '1' denoting the PM you sent. Mmm. Where's my bell? Angry
