How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

FFS, please turn it off. I've got another five already. Its really fucking annoying.

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 16:51

@HokeyWokey

I always wondered why MN didn't have notifications tbh. It's a standard feature of most sites.
But what does it actually add. We can all look atvl threads im on to see if there's been any more updates? All it seems to do is make it more likely you will miss PMs ws they are now just another number in tbe notifications list.
HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 16:54

I'm used to sites with notifications. It's easy to see at a glance whats's going on on the threads you have posted on.

Plus there are usually different symbols for PMs and updates on threads.

WunWun · 10/11/2020 16:55

But this site has 'I'm on, so notifications add literally nothing at all except extra work that no one asked for.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:56

@WunWun You shouldn't be getting that. How are you hiding the threads? Are you removing them from your watch list? Or are using the separate hide thread feature?

Exactly! We dont need a way for people to see whats happening on theads you've posted on, we already have one.
HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 16:58

Well I like it anyway. So thank you MNHQ

Not on the mobile site.
WunWun · 10/11/2020 17:00

If I unwatch threads they stay in 'I'm on', so I normally click the 'hide thread' option from there.

WunWun · 10/11/2020 17:01

From the three dots next to the thread in 'I'm on' I mean.

WitchesSpelleas · 10/11/2020 17:01

I like it too, HokeyWokey.

DadDadDad · 10/11/2020 17:03

Another user asking PLEASE can you offer the ability to turn off these notifications?

I monitor "Threads I'm Watching" anyway to see when interesting posts have been added, and that orange number popping up on every refresh is just annoying.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:05

I always wondered what the point of @user was if you didn't get a notification to tell you.

SunshineCake · 10/11/2020 17:05

Just because other sites have it doesn't mean MN has to..

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:07

So just click and marks as read. It's not exactly hard.
SunshineCake · 10/11/2020 17:08

@Sparklingbrook

But experience tells me sometimes people get OK with things that they initially are sceptical of.

I am still reeling from 'Most Active' being renamed 'Trending' actually. Angry Grin

I hate this. Another thing MN changed to be the same as something else Hmm.
HerFlowersToLove · 10/11/2020 17:09

What is the point of it? I can click on the buttons at the bottom of my screen to get full information on all the threads I'm on or watching. The number at the top tells me nothing, and I keep having to check it to see if I've missed a PM, but actually it's almost always just a less useful version of clicking on the buttons. Bonkers.

How to view your Mumsnet notifications
WunWun · 10/11/2020 17:10

Well yes it is hard actually if you have to click a pointless thing and back out after every single time you read a thread.

LittleMissLockdown · 10/11/2020 17:12

So just click and marks as read. It's not exactly hard.

The trouble is that works for only a short amount of time. Right now for example I've posted on several threads that are active and despite clearing my 20+ notifications less than an hour ago im already back up to 6. If they dont add an off feature it's just going to keep getting to the point it reads 20+.

One of the things I've always liked about MN is that it isn't like all the other sites!
listsandbudgets · 10/11/2020 17:15

please make it go away. Not only does it keep changing the number - I can't seem to view them anway.

Still I'm sure I'll get used to ignoring it.

Mumsnet... what everyone wants is AN EDIT FEATURE (well I do anyway!!) We don't want notifications when we can already see from threads we're on / email notifications... I want to be able to change my posts if there's something wrong with them... please

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 17:15

It's a tiny red number. I have no idea why it would annoy people so much.
listsandbudgets · 10/11/2020 17:17

PS when I click on notifications nothing happens. Does it work with Chrome please? (but mainly make them go away)

Stopthebloodynotifications · 10/11/2020 17:19

I am not a fan.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 10/11/2020 17:19
@EasilyDepleted If you have removed a thread from your watch list you won't get notifications for it.
If it's only threads on my watch list, not threads I'm on, that's ok. But I don't want to know when I've been @ed, I changed my email notifications for that reason.
